Bocas del Toro in January With Kids: Weather, Surf and Where to Stay
January is a school-holiday-friendly month in Panama, with warm water and surf season in full swing, but it is also on the rainier side. We explain what to expect with children and which rooms work for families.

For families escaping a northern January, Panama’s Caribbean coast is an obvious idea. It is warm, it is a short hop from Panama City and the kids can swim. It is also not a guaranteed-dry month, and January is when the Caribbean swell starts to matter. We use the lodge’s own weather notes and booking terms for every Casa Cayuco fact, and add our family-travel view on top.
Bocas del Toro in January with kids is warm (about 27 °C / 82 °F), a little rainy and surf-season lively, which is fine for children aged five and over if you pick a beachfront family room and plan around the morning weather. What January weather is really like
According to the lodge, November to January is generally the rainier part of the year on this coast, with rain usually falling at night and clearing by late morning. Average temperatures stay around 27 °C (82 °F), and Panama is outside the hurricane belt. Forecasts that show thunderstorms every day are typical tropical unpredictability, not a sign that every day will be wet.

The sea is livelier too. The lodge says the biggest surf swell runs from November to April, so January beaches can have waves. Protected snorkel spots work all year, and the lodge describes its own beach as calm and swimmable all year, but always supervise children and ask the guides each morning what the sea is doing. For the calmest water of all, August to October is better, as we explain in our September guide.
Why families still pick January
There are good reasons. School holidays in many countries cluster around the turn of the year, so families who can only travel then have a warm option on one flight leg from Panama City. The lodge reopened on 1 November after its May–October closure, with a new guest lounge, and it adds two new beachfront rooms from 15 December 2026, so in January 2027 the property will be fresh from its renovations. And because the dry season starts building in February, January can be a transition month with a mix of weather.
If your family can be flexible, we would push you toward late January or February over late December, because rainfall tends to ease, but we cannot promise it. See our January weather guide for the full picture.

A large covered porch matters more than you think in the rainy months: a place to play cards or read while the rain falls is worth having. Our guides to the Tortuga and Delfín bungalows explain each room.

What kids can do when it rains
Because rain usually falls at night, most days leave plenty of time outdoors. The guides plan excursions with you at check-in, so you can swap them to suit the sky. Good options for children aged five and over include the two-hour Salt Creek village tour (included), the Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop ($25) with poison dart frogs, sloths and monkeys, the one-hour Sloth Creek boat ride ($40) and the half-day Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70). Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are free, and the lodge has a library, lounge and games-friendly porches for quieter hours.

Surf and swimming safety with children
The surf season is exciting but is not the best time for beginners in the water. Surf excursions at the lodge ($75, two-person minimum) are for strong swimmers and confident surfers only and the lodge says it is not a surf school. Families with younger children should treat the sea as variable, stay near the calm part of the beach, keep a close eye on the little ones and ask staff each morning about conditions. Bring water shoes for rocky sections and trails, and rash vests for sun and abrasion. See our guide to surfing from Bastimentos if you have teen surfers in the group.
Practicalities: kids' age, food and getting there
The lodge accepts guests aged five and over only. Kid-friendly meal options are available on request, and the all-inclusive meals are plant-based with fresh fish; allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten. Most families fly Panama City (Albrook) to Bocas in about 50 minutes with Air Panama, then take the included speedboat, 30–35 minutes through mangrove islands. The recommended flight lands around 2:00 pm for the 2:00 pm boat pickup. Our how to get there guide explains it step by step.
Remember the 3-night minimum, 10% hotel tax, staff gratuities (12–15% of the stay recommended), drinks and excursions as extras.
Who January is not right for
If you cannot cope with rain or a bouncy sea, choose February to April or August to October. If your child is under five, Casa Cayuco is not an option. If you need air conditioning in every room, only the villa has it. And if you want nightlife for the grown-ups, Bocas Town is a boat ride away. See our Where to stay in Panama page for alternatives.
A sample four-night family plan for January
Since rain tends to fall at night and clear by late morning, we would plan outdoor days for the morning and keep afternoons flexible. This is how we would shape a four-night stay, the way we would for our own family. Nothing needs pre-booking, as the guides plan excursions at check-in.
| Day | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive by afternoon boat, swim, dinner on the dock | Gentle start after the flight; the recommended flight lands around 2:00 pm |
| Day 2 | Sendero jungle loop in the morning, kayaks after lunch | Sloths, frogs and monkeys when it is freshest and cooler |
| Day 3 | Salt Creek village tour (included), then rest or paddle board | Culture in the morning, quiet afternoon if it rains |
| Day 4 | Zapatillas islands half day, snorkelling | Pick the day with the calmest sea and best sky |
| Departure | Breakfast, return boat around 12:30 pm | Check-out is 12:30 pm |
If you want more time, add the chocolate farm or the Sloth Creek boat ride on a spare morning. We explain why four or five nights beats three in our how many nights guide.
