Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow: What It Is Really Like
Tortuga is the bungalow we would put a family of up to five in: right on the beach, open to the sea breeze, and a short walk from the dock. Here is what the lodge says about it, who it suits and who should pick another room.

When people ask us for a beachfront bungalow in Panama, they usually mean the same thing: wake up, open the door, and the sea is there. At Casa Cayuco that room is Tortuga. We have not stayed in it yet — we researched the lodge in depth before partnering with it — so everything below comes from the lodge’s own room description and booking terms, with our honest view of who it fits.
The Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow at Casa Cayuco is a spacious open-air beach bungalow that sleeps five (one queen bed plus up to three twin beds), with an en-suite bathroom and a large covered porch facing the waves. It is our pick for families with kids aged 5+ who want to be on the sand. Book through our link, check that the code HungryTravelPanama is in the promo box, and you get 4% off. Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow at Casa Cayuco
Beachfront bungalow · sleeps 5 · 1 queen bed + up to 3 twin beds. All meals and the boat transfer from Bocas Town included · 3-night minimum.
Tortuga at a glance
Casa Cayuco is an eco-adventure lodge on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja, on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos in Bocas del Toro, Panama. It has eleven accommodations, from a treetop cabaña to a three-bedroom villa, and Tortuga is one of the beachfront bungalows.

- Type: beachfront bungalow, open-air design
- Sleeps: up to 5 — one queen bed and up to three twin beds
- Bathroom: en-suite, open-air
- Outside: a large covered porch where, in the lodge’s words, you can watch the waves crash on the beach and enjoy the cool ocean breezes
- Cooling: a high-powered ceiling fan (no air conditioning; only the villa has it)
- Included with your stay: all meals, the round-trip boat from Bocas Town, kayaks, SUP boards and snorkel gear
Like every cabin and suite, it comes with a memory foam mattress, high thread count sheets, a mosquito net, high-speed wifi and handmade organic coconut soap and hair care from Punta Coco in Bocas.
What 'open-air' really means
This is the part we want you to read before you fall for the photos. Tortuga is built in the open-air style of the lodge: you live with the breeze, the sound of the sea and the jungle behind you. There is no air conditioning, but the ceiling fan is powerful and the beachfront position helps. The mosquito net over the beds is there for dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes and chitras (sandflies) are most active — the lodge suggests bringing natural repellent.
The upside is real, though. Rain in Bocas del Toro usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and the average temperature is a comfortable 27 °C (82 °F) all year. Electricity is solar and available 24/7, with US-style Type A, 110 V outlets, so phones and cameras are no problem. The lodge asks guests not to use hair dryers.
If you know you will not sleep without air conditioning, the better room is the villa — see our guide to air conditioning in Bocas del Toro hotels. If you love falling asleep to waves, Tortuga is exactly the point.
Beach access: why this position matters
Casa Cayuco says it is one of the only resorts in the Bocas del Toro archipelago with direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year round. That matters more than it sounds. Many Caribbean beaches in the archipelago are exposed to surf or backed by mangroves, and swimming with children means a boat trip. Here, the steps from the dock lead into calm water, and the lodge provides sea kayaks, SUP boards and snorkel gear at no extra charge.

From Tortuga you are on the sand with your gear in a few steps. For a family of five with kids aged 5 and up, that means short, easy swims between meals, no packing a boat bag for every outing and no negotiating a long walk back when a child is tired. Calmest water for swimming and snorkelling is generally August to October; the biggest surf swell is November to April, so check the sea state in the month you plan to travel.
How a family of five uses Tortuga
The bed layout is the key detail: one queen bed plus up to three twin beds. That suits two adults with up to three children, or a small group of friends who do not mind sharing. It is one room, though, so do not expect separate bedrooms. If you want two bedrooms and a door between you and the kids, look at the new Cangrejo cabaña (opening from 15 December 2026, sleeps four) or the Estrella De Mar villa (sleeps eight). We compare the options in our full rooms comparison.
A typical Casa Cayuco day for a family is built around the included extras: coffee and tea in the morning, a chef’s-choice breakfast at the communal table, kayaks or snorkelling, lunch, an afternoon snack brought wherever you are, and a three-course dinner, often with fresh fish landed at the dock by local fishermen. The cuisine is predominantly plant-based, and the kitchen can accommodate allergies and diets (it does use nuts and gluten, so tell them in advance). Kid-friendly meals are available on request.

Tortuga vs Delfín vs Mono
Tortuga, Delfín and Mono all sleep five or six, so families often ask which to choose. This is how they differ based on the lodge’s descriptions:
| Room | Sleeps | Beds | The feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow | 5 | 1 queen + up to 3 twin | On the beach, waves and sea breeze from the porch |
| Delfín Beachside Bungalow | 5 | 1 queen + up to 3 twin | Sea and jungle-garden view from the porch |
| Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña | 6 | 1 king + up to 4 twin | Two levels in the rainforest, most private; upper level fully screened |

What the stay includes (and what it does not)
Casa Cayuco works almost like an all-inclusive on a remote island. Included: the scheduled round-trip speedboat from Bocas Town, all meals (breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack), morning coffee and tea, a guided tour of Salt Creek village, kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear, yoga mats, daily housekeeping and 24/7 staff.
Not included: staff gratuities (the lodge suggests 12–15% of the stay), drinks, guided excursions, the 10% Panamanian hotel tax on room charges and the 7% tax on excursions and drinks. Excursions such as the half-day Isla Zapatillas trip ($80 per person, as listed by the lodge in November 2026) are planned with the in-house guides at check-in, so you do not need to book them in advance. Our prices and inclusions guide explains every extra in detail.
Who Tortuga is not for
We would rather you book the right trip than the wrong one, so here is who Casa Cayuco does not suit:
- Families with children under 5. The lodge does not accept guests under five, because of the remote location and safety.
- Anyone who needs air conditioning in the bedroom. Only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan.
- Travellers who want nightlife. Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes away by boat, and there is one scheduled boat a day.
- Short stays. The minimum is three nights, and honestly four or five is better.
- Light sleepers who dislike waves or wildlife at night. An open-air beachfront room has sea sounds and jungle sounds; earplugs are cheap insurance.
Getting to Tortuga
Most guests fly from Panama City (Albrook, PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) in about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends Flight 980, which lands around 2:00 pm, and Flight 981 home, leaving about 2:30 pm, because they match the daily boat: pickup at the Bocas airport at 2:00 pm, departure from the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, and the return from Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm. The round-trip transfer is included. The speedboat ride takes about 30–35 minutes through the mangrove islands of the Bastimentos National Marine Park. Other times are possible only as a private transfer for a fee, and early pickups are not available. Our full getting-there guide has the overland and Costa Rica options.

Our Honest Final Word
Tortuga is not the most private room — that is the treetop cabaña — but it is the simplest to love: a roomy open-air bungalow on a calm beach, with a porch for evenings and the whole day’s activities included. For families of up to five with kids aged 5 and up, it is the room we would look at first. If you want air conditioning or separate bedrooms, look at the villa or the new Cangrejo cabaña instead.
