The quick answer: three ways to reach Bocas del Toro
Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast, and the gateway is Bocas Town on Isla Colón. There are three practical ways to get there:

- Fly from Panama City (Albrook, PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) in about 50 minutes.
- Overland by overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante, then a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town.
- From Costa Rica by Sansa flight from San José or the Caribe Shuttle.
Flying is more expensive but saves hours, and it matches the lodge’s scheduled boat. Overland is cheaper and slower, and you should plan a rest day.
Flying from Panama City to Bocas del Toro
Most guests fly from Albrook with Air Panama, about 50 minutes. Casa Cayuco recommends Air Panama Flight 980 (arrives Bocas around 2:00 pm) and Flight 981 back (leaves around 2:30 pm), because they match the lodge’s boat. Fly Trip also flies daily, with times that vary by weekday. For private charters, the lodge mentions Blue Skies.

In Panama City, Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo (mention the lodge). The lodge lists English-speaking driver Hobby Pro Tours, and Uber works too. Remember to carry a little cash: Panama uses US dollars.
The last leg: the boat from Bocas Town to Casa Cayuco
Casa Cayuco has one scheduled boat a day, included in your stay in both directions. At 2:00 pm the captain meets guests at Bocas airport with a sign (for the recommended flights), and the boat leaves the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm. The ride takes about 30–35 minutes, through the protected mangrove islands of the Bastimentos National Marine Park. On departure day the boat leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm. Other times mean a private transfer for a fee, and early pick-ups are not available. The lodge sends a pre-arrival form to confirm everything.

Overland: buses, water taxis and shuttles
The budget route is an overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante, which leaves at 8 pm and arrives about 6 am, followed by a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. From Boquete, a bus transfer via Almirante (Hello Travel Panama) takes about four hours including the water taxi. If you come from Costa Rica, Sansa flies San José to Bocas, currently on Tuesdays and Thursdays (about 50 minutes), and the Caribe Shuttle goes overland. Check all schedules before you plan, as they change.

Our tip: if you take an overnight bus, build in a day to recover, because the lodge’s boat leaves at 3:00 pm and you will want to arrive in a good mood.
Waiting in Bocas Town and where to leave your bags
If your flight lands early or you are waiting, the lodge suggests two spots with a view: Bibi’s on the Beach (a $1 per person water taxi) or La Buga on the water. The pick-up point is the bookkeeper’s office, “Oficina Virginia Vasquez”, a 10-minute walk from the airport or a $2 per person taxi; luggage can be stored there. Look for the yellow and turquoise house between the Policía Nacional and Brothers Restaurant.

Planning your length of stay
The minimum stay is three nights. Think of the first and last days as travel days, because the one scheduled boat leaves Bocas Town at 3:00 pm and the return leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm. For most families and couples we would plan four to six nights, which leaves time for the included village tour, a couple of guided half-days and at least one day with no plan at all. Remember that room rates are not published, so check live prices for your dates and compare a 3-night, 5-night and 7-night stay on the booking page.

A short packing list for an open-air jungle lodge
- Reef-safe sunscreen and natural insect repellent
- Headlamp or flashlight for paths at night
- Water shoes or trail shoes
- A light rain jacket (rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning)
- Quick-dry clothes, a swimsuit and a hat
- Some US cash for village crafts and chocolate
- School or medical supplies for Salt Creek, if you wish to help (Pack for a Purpose)
Leave the hair dryer at home. Panama is outside the hurricane belt, and the average temperature is around 27 °C all year.

Adventures from your doorstep: what to do while you stay
Casa Cayuco plans excursions at check-in with its in-house guides, so nothing has to be booked ahead. As listed on the lodge’s site in November 2026 (per person, prices may change): Isla Zapatillas half day $80, mangrove snorkelling $85, Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour $70, Bat Cave Tour $95, Monkey Island $70, Sloth Creek $40, Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop $25, and Nidori Beach full day $135 (three-person minimum). The Salt Creek village tour is included, and kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are free to use from the beach.

An honest note on who should look elsewhere
Casa Cayuco is a specific kind of holiday. It is not the right pick for guests under 5, for one- or two-night stopovers, for anyone who wants air conditioning in every room, or for travellers who want bars and clubs after dark. Mosquitoes and chitras come out at dusk and dawn, so bring natural repellent and a headlamp. If you want a different style of stay, our guide to where to stay in Bocas del Toro compares Bocas Town with the outer islands.
