January is when many northern families start to feel that a Caribbean escape is overdue — and when it is only about ten weeks away. We live in Rovaniemi, where January means darkness and snow, so we pay close attention to warm-weather months. The weather information here comes from the lodge’s own FAQ, and everything about Casa Cayuco comes from its pages and booking terms; we have not stayed there yet.

Short answer

Bocas del Toro in January is warm (about 27 °C / 82 °F), with a mix of sunshine and passing rain and the start of the surf swell. January weather in Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro is warm all year, averaging about 27 °C (82 °F). According to Casa Cayuco, the generally drier months are February to April and August to October, while November to January and May to July are rainier. The rainiest are June, July, November and December — so January is on the wetter side of the calendar but not at the extreme end.

The lodge’s advice is practical: rain mostly falls at night and clears by late morning, and a forecast showing thunderstorms every day is typical tropical unpredictability rather than a washout. Panama is also outside the hurricane belt. Pack a light rain jacket and plan flexible days.

The sea and the surf

Surf swell is biggest from November to April, so January sits right in the middle of it. That is good news for surfers and less relevant for swimmers: the lodge says its own beach stays calm and swimmable all year, and protected snorkel spots work all year too. The very calmest sea, according to the lodge, is August to October.

If you want guided surf outings, the lodge offers a half-day trip to less-known breaks in the marine park ($75, strong swimmers only) and a full-day trip to Nidori Beach ($135, all levels), as listed in November 2026. See our surf base guide for details.

What is new at Casa Cayuco in January

The lodge was closed from 1 May to 31 October 2026 for building work and is open again. A brand-new guest lounge is part of that project, and two new beachfront accommodations are ready for stays from 15 December 2026: Starfish Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama, a fully screened one-bedroom bungalow for two with a king bed, and Cangrejo Beachfront Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama, a fully screened two-bedroom cabaña for four. January guests will be among the first to use them, which is exciting but also means we cannot tell you yet what they are like in person. We are happy to say that plainly.

Getting there in January

Most guests fly Panama City (Albrook, PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC), about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends Flight 980, arriving around 2:00 pm, because it matches the included boat transfer at 2:00 pm from the airport; return on Flight 981 leaving about 2:30 pm, with the boat leaving the lodge around 12:30 pm. Other times need a private transfer for a fee. January flights can fill up with holiday travellers, so book flights early. Our getting-there guide covers buses and the Costa Rica route.

Is January right for you?

January suits travellers who like warm water, a bit of weather and a lodge that is open to the air. It does not suit anyone who needs guaranteed dry days, who wants air conditioning everywhere (only the villa has it), who has children under five, or who wants nightlife. January 2027 is also when the lodge will be settling its new buildings, so we would keep expectations flexible and check anything you care about with the lodge directly.

Compared with Christmas, January is usually calmer; see our December guide for the holiday week.
