Panama With Kids: Where to Stay for Beach, Wildlife and Easy Days
Panama is easier with children than most people expect, if you choose where to sleep carefully. Our family-trip logic, from Panama City to the Caribbean islands, and the lodge we’d book for kids aged 5 and over.

This guide is built from our own family travels and from Casa Cayuco’s own pages and booking terms — what is included, how to get there and what each room is like come straight from the lodge, never invented.
For Panama with kids, we’d split the trip: one or two nights in Panama City for the canal and Casco Viejo, then three or more nights at a lodge where children can swim, paddle and spot wildlife. Our pick for the beach part is Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama in Bocas del Toro, which welcomes children from age 5. Use the code HungryTravelPanama through our link for 4% off.

What makes Panama a good family destination
Panama uses US dollars and US-style outlets, has a short flight network and offers wildlife, beaches and history within one small country. The Panama Canal and Casco Viejo are on the usual city list; the Caribbean islands and the highlands offer the rest. For a family, the real question is pace. Panama rewards a slower trip with fewer stops, so we’d rather give children one long beach stay than four one-night hotels.
A simple family route
- Panama City, 1–2 nights. See the canal and Casco Viejo. The lodge recommends American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo and offers its guests special rates there; mention Casa Cayuco.
- Fly to Bocas del Toro. Air Panama takes about 50 minutes from Albrook airport. The lodge’s recommended Flight 980 arrives around 2:00 pm.
- Boat to the lodge. The included scheduled boat takes about 30–35 minutes.
- 3–5 nights on the beach. Swim, snorkel, paddle, walk and watch wildlife.
Details for each step are in our Bocas getting-there guide.
What children can do at a Bocas eco lodge
- Swim at a calm beach and snorkel with gear supplied
- Paddle sea kayaks and stand-up paddle boards (included)
- Join the included Salt Creek village tour
- Spot sloths, monkeys, birds and red poison dart frogs on trails
- Take a Sloth Creek boat trip (1 hour, $40 per person at the time of writing)
- Visit the Botanical Chocolate Farm ($70) or Isla Zapatillas ($80)
- Join a Monkey Island visit (2 hours, $70), led by the Monkey Island Foundation’s founder
Everything is planned at check-in with the in-house guides, so no booking needed in advance.

Why we'd pick Casa Cayuco for a family stay
Casa Cayuco is a small eco-lodge on Isla Bastimentos that Tripadvisor named the #1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World for 2026. All meals and an afternoon snack are included, kids’ options are available on request and a jungle trail starts at the lodge. It’s remote, which is both the attraction and the main limit: guests must be 5 or older, and the stay has a three-night minimum. We have not stayed there yet; this is based on the lodge’s own information and our research.

Practical notes for parents
- Health: the lodge says malaria and Zika are not a concern in its region. Check vaccines with your doctor.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen, natural repellent, a flashlight, water shoes and a light rain jacket.
- Rain usually falls at night. Panama is outside the hurricane belt.
- Budget for 10% hotel tax, 7% tax on drinks and excursions and 12–15% gratuities.
Food and picky eaters
The kitchen cooks mostly plant-based food, with fresh fish from local fishermen and traditional Panamanian to global dishes. Kid-friendly meal options are available on request, and allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten. Meals are served at communal tables and the afternoon snack is brought to wherever you are, which keeps energy and mood stable. Tell the lodge about any allergies before you arrive, and pack a few favourite snacks for the journey.

When Panama with kids isn't a good idea
If your children are under 5, Casa Cayuco is not an option, and a Bocas Town hotel or a Panama City stay may suit you better. If you need air conditioning in every room, choose the villa or a different type of hotel. See also our guide to where to stay in Panama.
