What the Family & Friends Igloo is

The Family & Friends Igloo — Gstaad5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and its twins in Davos Klosters and Zermatt are shared snow igloos for groups: sleeping bags lined up on a snow bed under a carved relief wall, with thermal mats, thin mattresses and sheepskins under you. The base price covers three adults, and each additional person is charged separately, up to six people in Davos Klosters and Gstaad and up to four in Zermatt. The photos Iglu-Dorf publishes show parents and a child lying on red expedition sleeping bags, which is the idea: one big shared bed in the snow.

It includes the same programme as every igloo night: welcome drink and aperitif tray, igloo tour, all-you-can-eat cheese fondue, whirlpool and sauna slot, snowshoe walk or night walk, tea served to the sleeping bag, and breakfast. Prices are as published on iglu-dorf.com in November 2026.

The honest age question

Iglu-Dorf’s own advice is an overnight stay for children aged 6 and above. For younger children it points to Gstaad or Kühtai, the lower villages, but also says plainly that there are no changing tables, no highchairs and no childcare. We agree with the cautious line: a child who is still in nappies or wakes in the night needing a warm room will have a hard night, and so will you.

The checkout age bands help you plan: adults are 16 and over, teenagers 10 to 15, and children up to 9. For a 6-year-old who has been on skis or a sledge in the cold, an igloo night can be a great adventure; for a child who hates the cold, it will not be.

For teenagers, the draw is the whirlpool under the stars, the snowshoe walk with headlamps and the novelty of sleeping in snow. For grandparents, think carefully about the walk and the cold: Iglu-Dorf says the route is not suitable for limited mobility.

Which village is best for a family

Gstaad is our first pick for families: it is the lowest village, the walk for day guests is five to seven minutes, and the FAQ lists running water and showers there. The Family & Friends Igloo takes up to six.

Davos Klosters is the biggest village and takes up to six in the Family & Friends Igloo, but the FAQ lists no running water or showers. Zermatt offers the Matterhorn backdrop, but the Family & Friends Igloo takes only four, and booking is by phone or e-mail at the moment.

How the evening works with children

The day is built around the cable car timetable. In Gstaad you check in at 4:30 pm at the village bar, take the train and the cable car up to a village that opens at 4:00 pm; in Davos the meeting point is Weissfluhjoch at 4:00 pm; in Zermatt it is Rotenboden at 4:30 pm. Night guests are guided up and never walk alone, and the cable car cannot be used after it stops running.

Fondue is all-you-can-eat; for children who do not like cheese, ask for the pasta with tomato sauce (Gstaad and Zermatt) or the vegetable stew (Davos) when you book. After dinner there is a private slot for the hot tub and sauna, then the night walk or snowshoeing, which is voluntary. In the morning you get tea in the sleeping bag and breakfast.

What to pack for the family

  • full winter clothing for everyone: warm shoes, gloves, two hats, dry socks
  • long underwear or pyjamas for the sleeping bag, plus a spare set
  • swimwear, a bath towel and flip-flops for the hot tub
  • headlamps for every person above toddler age, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • snacks you are happy with, toothbrushes and wipes

Do not bring sleeping bags, Iglu-Dorf supplies expedition bags and liners. Pack in backpacks, not suitcases.

Which nights work for families

Our code covers Sunday to Thursday nights, 4 January to 4 April 2027, which means in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open. For families this is mostly good news: school holiday weeks are the busiest, and a midweek night is easier to book. On the other hand, a Sunday-night igloo means a Monday morning at school for some countries, so check your calendar. Iglu-Dorf recommends only one night per stay.

If your child is too young

Waiting is a good plan. The TinyLodge — Gstaad5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a heated cabin for two, so it does not fit a family, but it is a cosy adult alternative while children are small. For the family, the Family & Friends Igloo — Davos Klosters5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 or Gstaad becomes realistic from about age 6.

A family timeline for the evening

Using Gstaad as the example, because it is the village we would pick for a family: you meet at 4:30 pm at the bar in the village for an aperitif, take the train to Saanenmöser, walk about four minutes to the cable car and ride up to Saanerslochgrat. Iglu-Dorf opens at 4:00 pm, so the village is ready when you arrive. You get a welcome drink, the igloo tour and time to settle in before the fondue.

After dinner the programme is voluntary: a snowshoe walk or night walk with headlamps, then your private slot in the hot tub and sauna. Children usually run out of steam early, and that is fine, because the igloo is ready when you are. Tea is served to the sleeping bag at 7:30 or 8:30 and breakfast follows at 8:00 or 9:00, depending on your booking, in the warm Kota. Then you ride back down and the day is yours.

What it costs a family, as published

The Family & Friends Igloo starts from CHF 627 per night for three people. Each additional guest is charged separately, and we did not find the per-person extra charge on the pages we read, so the checkout is where you see your exact total for four, five or six people. On top come the cableway or train tickets, which are not included, the visitor’s tax and any extra food or drinks, billed at the end of the evening. A ski pass may cover part of the lift.

Budget by looking at the live total at checkout rather than doing your own arithmetic, and enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 before confirming so the 5% shows in the total. Friday and Saturday nights are excluded from the discount.

Questions to ask Iglu-Dorf before you book

If you are unsure, write to the booking office (info@iglu-dorf.com, or +41 41 612 27 28, Monday to Friday 09:00–12:30 and 13:30–16:30). Good questions: is my child’s age suitable, which nights are open on my dates, how do we arrange vegetarian dinner, where can we leave luggage. Mention HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in any message that is a booking request. Iglu-Dorf sends a safety briefing after booking; read it with the children so that everyone knows the rules for the walk.

A winter-family view from Lapland

We live in Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland, where winter clothing is a daily habit rather than an event. That makes us relaxed about cold, and also careful about what children need: proper layers, warm feet, regular snacks and a clear plan. An igloo night asks for the same. If your children are happy outside in winter, they will likely enjoy it; if they are not, consider the Gstaad TinyLodge for the adults and wait on the family trip.

How to book your family igloo with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5

There are no special links or tracking cookies in this partnership. The code typed at checkout is the only thing that gives you the 5% and registers the booking as ours, so it is the one step not to skip. We are Iglu-Dorf’s affiliate partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code; it costs you nothing extra.

  1. Pick your village and igloo. Open Family & Friends Igloo — Gstaad5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 or the quick-booking page on iglu-dorf.com and choose the village and the igloo type.
  2. Add your guests first (adults 16+, teenagers 10–15, children up to 9). The date calendar only appears after that. Choose a Sunday-to-Thursday night between 4 January and 4 April 2027 — in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open.
  3. Fill in guest details and extras: single sleeping bags instead of a double (free), a dog (CHF 25), a vegetarian or pasta dinner alternative, a surprise cake or a rose in ice.
  4. Find the “Promo-Code” box (“Do you want to redeem a promo code?”), type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and press Add. Check that the total drops by 5% before you confirm. The “Voucher” box above it is for gift vouchers, not for our code.
  5. Confirm and pay. You can cancel free of charge up to 60 days before the night; after that Iglu-Dorf charges 10% (59–30 days), 50% (29–7 days) and 100% (under 7 days or no-show), with refunds preferably as vouchers. Discounts are not cumulative.

For the Family & Friends Igloo in Zermatt, which Iglu-Dorf currently takes by enquiry only, write to info@iglu-dorf.com or call +41 41 612 27 28 and put the code in your message.

Who should skip it

An igloo night is not for everyone, and we would rather say so now. It is not a good fit for children under about 6 (Iglu-Dorf recommends the stay from age 6 and offers no changing tables, highchairs or childcare), for anyone who needs a private bathroom in the night (the toilets are shared and dry; the “Plus” igloo with a private toilet is not part of our code), for people who cannot walk in snow with a backpack, or for light sleepers who dislike sleeping at about 0 °C. Wheelchairs and limited mobility are not supported either. And if you can only travel on a Friday or Saturday, the code does not apply to those nights.

Our Honest Final Word

A family igloo night is a good idea for a family with children aged 6 and over who like the cold; it is a poor idea for toddlers and for anyone who needs a warm room at 3 am. We are a family from Lapland, we like winter, and we still chose to read before recommending. We have not slept there yet.
