We are a family from Finnish Lapland, so our own surfing mostly happens in lake ripples, but we plan trips for people who love waves and we know the question that matters: where do you sleep so surf is easy to reach? In Bocas del Toro the answer for many travellers is on Isla Bastimentos. Everything about Casa Cayuco below comes from the lodge’s own pages; we have not stayed there yet.

Short answer

The best base for surfing in Bocas del Toro, if you also want a proper lodge, is Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos. The lodge runs a half-day surfing excursion to less-known breaks in the marine park ($75 per person, two-person minimum) and a full-day trip to Nidori Beach ($135 per person, three-person minimum) with surf for all levels. The biggest swell runs November to April. When the swell shows up

According to the lodge, the biggest surf swell in the Bocas del Toro archipelago arrives from November to April. The calmest sea, better for swimming and snorkelling, comes August to October. That matches what many travellers find: the Caribbean side of Panama has a winter swell season, and the dry months of February to April fall right inside it.

For surfers that means a trip now through spring is the sweet spot, but also that the same beaches can be rough for casual swimmers on big days. Casa Cayuco itself sits on a calm, swimmable beach (it says that is true all year), so non-surfing partners and kids do not have to deal with the break.

What the lodge actually offers surfers

Let us be clear and honest: Casa Cayuco is a lodge that offers surf trips, not a surf school. Its own wording is that the half-day outing visits less-known breaks in the Bastimentos National Marine Park and that it is for strong swimmers and confident surfers only. It costs $75 per person and needs at least two people.

For a bigger day out, the full-day trip to Nidori Beach takes an hour by boat to Ensenada village on Punta Valiente, with a short hike to the beach. It suits all levels, costs $135 per person and needs at least three people. Prices are as listed on casacayuco.com in November 2026 and may change.

Boards: the lodge includes paddle boards for guests, and its groups page lists surf boards and boogie boards among the equipment. Ask the team about what is available when you book, because we do not know if boards can be provided to every guest.

Why Isla Bastimentos works as a base

Isla Bastimentos is the big, green island east of Bocas Town, covered in rainforest and home to the national marine park. Staying on its southeast tip means you are already in boat range of the quieter breaks and beaches, and you skip the 30–35 minute ride out from Bocas Town every morning. Mornings start early on the water; evenings end with dinner on the dock.

The lodge also puts you in reach of everything surfers do between sessions: snorkelling, kayaking, Isla Zapatillas, jungle trails. Our guide to where to stay on Isla Bastimentos compares the options.

Rooms that suit a surf trip

Surf trips are often friends or couples, sometimes with a non-surfing family member along. These rooms fit that pattern:

A surf day, step by step

A typical day at the lodge starts with locally grown coffee, then breakfast at a communal table. Excursions are planned on arrival with the in-house guides — no need to book in advance. After a surf trip you come home to a snack brought to wherever you are, a swim off the calm beach, and a three-course dinner. The plant-based menu and fresh fish are a good match for a body that has been paddling all day.

The lodge also has an in-house massage therapist (book at check-in) and yoga on the jungle deck, which happen to be the two best recoveries after a long session.

What to pack and bring

  • Board shorts, rash vests and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Water shoes for reef and rocks.
  • A headlamp, a light rain jacket and natural insect repellent.
  • Cash for craft stalls in Salt Creek village and the chocolate farm.

If you plan to bring your own board, ask the lodge first. Our packing list covers the rest.

Who this is not for

If you want a dedicated surf camp with lessons, equipment rental shops and a break out the door, Casa Cayuco is not that. Guided surf outings need strong swimmers and two or more people. Bocas Town, with its bars, is 30–35 minutes away. Only the villa has air conditioning. Guests must be 5 or older, and the minimum stay is three nights.

If you are a mixed family, one adult surfs while others kayak, snorkel and relax, then it works nicely.

Beyond the waves: what else fills the week

Surf days are weather-dependent, so it helps to have a plan B that you will actually enjoy. From the lodge you can add a half-day to Isla Zapatillas ($80), mangrove snorkelling with a chance of dolphins ($85), the Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70), Sloth Creek ($40) or the Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop ($25). Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are free to use from the beach. The Salt Creek village tour, about two hours, is included with every stay and is a good rest-day outing.

For wildlife spotting there are poison dart frogs, sloths, capuchin monkeys, birds and small caimans around the property and trails. Surfers who like early starts often enjoy the morning bird calls too.

Staying at least four or five nights gives swell a chance to change; the minimum is three. Read our how many nights in Bocas del Toro for the reasoning.

Our Honest Final Word
