School Group Trip to Panama: An Educational Eco Lodge Stay in Bocas del Toro
Teachers and trip leaders look for places that are safe, hands-on and honest about what they offer. Here is how Casa Cayuco in Bocas del Toro works for school groups, youth groups and research teams, and what to ask before you book.

Planning a school or youth trip is a different job from planning a family holiday: you are responsible for other people’s children, a budget, a risk assessment and a parent group chat. We cannot do that work for you. What we can do is read the lodge’s own pages closely and tell you what they say, what they do not say and what we would ask. We have not visited yet; everything below about Casa Cayuco comes from its published information.
A school group trip to Panama can work at Casa Cayuco, a remote eco lodge in Bocas del Toro that lists school groups and research teams among the groups it hosts, with a village tour included, all meals, kayaks and snorkel gear, and room for up to 53 guests. Groups of 20 or more get discounted per-person rates by custom quote, and a group of 30 or more can reserve the whole lodge. Book or enquire through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives 4% off for bookings made on the lodge’s booking page.

What Casa Cayuco says about hosting groups
According to the lodge’s pages, it hosts large family vacations, yoga and wellness retreats, research teams, multi-day kayak trips, milestone celebrations, writers’ escapes, school groups and wedding parties. Its capacity is a maximum of 53 guests in total. A group of 30 or more can reserve the entire lodge, and groups of 20 or more get discounted per-person rates, by custom quote from the lodge. Eleven accommodations (bungalows, cabins, lodge suites and a three-bedroom villa) sleep from two to eight guests each.

The lodge’s age limit is five and over, which suits most school-age groups, but note that it is firm. Our group accommodation guide has more on how bigger bookings work.
What students can learn here
Because the lodge is in the Bastimentos National Marine Park, the learning is real and local. Marine biology and ecology are on the doorstep: mangrove channels, coral reef, sponges, octopus and starfish on the mangrove snorkelling trip ($85 per person), invasive lionfish and the reasons for controlling them, and wildlife including sloths, capuchin monkeys, red poison dart frogs and small caimans. Culture and community are on the doorstep too: the Salt Creek village tour is included with every stay, and the lodge works closely with the village, employing 28 people from Salt Creek, with a portion of every stay funding projects such as the Salt Creek Medical Outpost run by Floating Doctors.

The lodge also runs on solar power with rainwater harvesting, composting, recycling and bulk buying, which gives a real case study in sustainability. See our sustainability guide.
Activities that suit a class or youth group
| Activity | Price (per person, Nov 2026) | Learning angle |

| Mangrove snorkelling, half day | $85 | Marine habitats, coral, sponges |
| Isla Zapatillas, half day | $80 | Marine park, snorkelling, beaches |
| Casa Cayuco Sendero, 2 hours | $25 | Rainforest wildlife, frogs, birds |
| Caiman Trail, 2 hours | $35 | Medicinal plants, caimans |
| Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour | $70 | Agriculture, cacao to chocolate |
| Lionfish spearing, 2 hours | Ask the lodge | Invasive species (with a professional guide) |
Prices are those listed on the lodge’s website and may change. Kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats are included, and for groups the lodge also lists surf boards, boogie boards and floating chairs. Our mangrove snorkelling guide and marine park guide add detail.

Safety, supervision and practicalities for leaders
We are not qualified to assess your group’s risk, and neither is a blog post. The lodge’s own description is that it has 24/7 on-site staff, a remote close-knit community and no safety concerns, with night watchmen mainly keeping the boats moored. The minimum age is five. Beyond that, a responsible leader will want to ask the lodge directly about supervision ratios, water-safety procedures, medical access (the lodge is 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town), emergency evacuation, life jackets on the boat and how guides handle different swimming abilities. Always get written answers and share them with parents. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance, and for a school trip we would treat that as essential.
Health: the lodge says malaria and Zika are not a concern in its region, and hepatitis A and B vaccinations are good to have but not required. We are not doctors, so tell families to check with their own doctor. Our safety guide for families has more.

Food, dietary needs and the daily rhythm
All meals are included: a chef’s-choice breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and a three-course dinner, mostly plant-based with fresh fish. Meals are served at communal tables, which works well for groups. Allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, so send dietary lists early. Kid-friendly options are available on request. Locally grown coffee and tea are served each morning for the adults. See our food guide.
Plan a loose daily rhythm: an activity in the morning when rain has usually cleared by late morning, free time or a quiet class session after lunch and a shared dinner. A library and lounge give you indoor space for debriefs.
Getting a group there
The lodge runs one scheduled boat a day, included in the stay, with the 2:00 pm pickup at Bocas airport for the recommended Air Panama flights. A big group should coordinate flights so everyone arrives on the same boat, or ask the lodge about private transfers, which cost extra. Overland, there is an overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante and a 30-minute water taxi. Our getting-there guide covers every route.
For a larger group, also ask about luggage handling and where the group can wait in Bocas Town before the boat, since the lodge suggests places such as Bibi’s on the Beach.
What to ask the lodge before you commit
- What is the group rate for 20+ guests, and what is included?
- What supervision, safety and emergency procedures apply?
- Which rooms are available for adult leaders, and how are students placed (for example, twin beds in bungalows such as Tortuga or Delfín, which sleep five)?
- What dietary and medical information do you need, and by when?
- Can the guides tailor the programme to our curriculum?
- What are the cancellation terms for a group, and is there a different deposit?
Note that standard terms: 50% deposit; more than 60 days before check-in the deposit is refunded minus a $100 admin fee; 45–60 days half the deposit is forfeited; inside 45 days the deposit is forfeited. Group terms may differ, so confirm in writing.
Who this is not right for
If your group includes children under five, this lodge is not an option. If you need air conditioning throughout, only the villa has it. If you want a large conference or classroom building, the lodge’s pages do not describe one. And if you need a short stay of under three nights, the minimum stay is three. See our Where to stay in Panama page for alternatives.
