Group trips are the hardest to plan: too many opinions, too many bedrooms, too many flights. A remote lodge makes some of that easier, because everybody eats together, sleeps within a few steps of each other and shares the same boat. We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco ourselves yet — we researched it in depth before partnering with it — so this guide follows the lodge’s own group information.

What a group gets at the lodge

Every guest, group or not, gets the scheduled round-trip boat from Bocas Town, all meals, an afternoon snack, a Salt Creek tour, and use of kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats. The lodge’s group page also lists surf boards, boogie boards and floating chairs. Meals are at communal tables, with a large table on the dock for evening dinners, and the food is largely plant-based with fresh fish. Allergies and diets are accommodated if you tell them ahead.

There is high-speed wifi, a full bar, a guest library and a lounge deck. A new guest lounge is being built along with two new bungalows, Starfish and Cangrejo, ready for stays from 15 December 2026.

The sustainability side also matters to many groups: the lodge runs on solar power with clean-burning propane, harvests and purifies its own rainwater and composts, and 28 of its staff come from the nearby village of Salt Creek. A portion of every stay supports village projects. For school groups, researchers and community-minded teams, that story is part of the experience, and the lodge’s Pack for a Purpose programme lets guests bring school and medical supplies for the village.

Activities that work for groups

Excursions are extra and planned at check-in. For groups the useful ones include Isla Zapatillas (half day, $80 per person), mangrove snorkelling ($85), the chocolate farm tour ($70), the Bat Cave tour ($95), Monkey Island ($70) and Nidori Beach ($135, three-person minimum). Surfing ($75) needs two people. Prices are the lodge’s November 2026 figures and may change. The lodge also lists multi-day kayak trips among the groups it hosts.

Free activities, such as a group kayak paddle, a yoga class on the jungle deck or a sunset on the dock, are easy to organise yourselves.

Organising the trip: a short checklist

  • Choose dates early. The lodge has only 53 beds, and Christmas and New Year are popular. Check our December guide.
  • Agree on a minimum of three nights. That is the lodge’s rule.
  • Collect deposits. 50% of the booking confirms a reservation; cancellation within 45 days forfeits it.
  • Check ages. No guests under 5.
  • Coordinate flights. The daily boat meets the recommended Air Panama flights; other arrival times require a private transfer for a fee.
  • Insurance. The lodge strongly recommends it.

A sample five-night group itinerary

Here is how we would shape five nights for a group of friends or an extended family, using only things the lodge offers:

  1. Day 1: fly Panama City to Bocas del Toro, take the 2:00 pm airport pickup and the boat to the lodge, settle in and have dinner together at the dock table.
  2. Day 2: free kayaks, SUP and snorkel gear on the calm beach, plus the included Salt Creek village tour.
  3. Day 3: half-day Isla Zapatillas trip with guided snorkelling, then yoga or massage for those who want a slow afternoon.
  4. Day 4: a split day: the chocolate farm for some, the Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop or Sloth Creek for others.
  5. Day 5: a long lunch, hammocks, the guest library and a farewell dinner.
  6. Day 6: breakfast, then the boat leaves around 12:30 pm for the afternoon flight.

Splitting the group between paid excursions and free activities keeps everyone happy, and the in-house guides organise them when you arrive. Remember to budget for the 10% hotel tax, the 7% tax on drinks and excursions, and 12–15% gratuities, all of which are extra. Our price guide explains the extras.

Weddings and milestone events

The lodge lists wedding parties and milestone celebrations among the groups it hosts, and our images show a wedding party on the dock. If you are planning one, speak to the lodge about numbers, dates and what is possible; we do not have details of event packages. The same applies to retreats and research teams.

Who group stays here are not for

We would rather you book the right trip than the wrong one, so here is who Casa Cayuco does not suit:

  • Families with children under 5. The lodge does not accept guests under five, because of the remote location and safety.
  • Anyone who needs air conditioning in the bedroom. Only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan.
  • Travellers who want nightlife. Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes away by boat, and there is one scheduled boat a day.
  • Short stays. The minimum is three nights, and honestly four or five is better.
  • Groups who want everyone to have air conditioning. Only one villa has it.

Getting a group to the lodge

Most guests fly from Panama City (Albrook, PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) in about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends Flight 980, which lands around 2:00 pm, and Flight 981 home, leaving about 2:30 pm, because they match the daily boat: pickup at the Bocas airport at 2:00 pm, departure from the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, and the return from Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm. The round-trip transfer is included. The speedboat ride takes about 30–35 minutes through the mangrove islands of the Bastimentos National Marine Park. Other times are possible only as a private transfer for a fee, and early pickups are not available. Our full getting-there guide has the overland and Costa Rica options.

How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount

Casa Cayuco does not publish nightly rates, so the booking page is where you see live prices for your dates. This is how to get our 4% off:

  1. Open our booking link — any button or room name on this page goes to Casa Cayuco’s own Cloudbeds booking engine.
  2. Check that HungryTravelPanama is in the promo box before you search dates. Our link pre-fills it; if the box is empty, type the code in exactly as written.
  3. Choose your dates (3 nights minimum) and your rooms. For a group of 20 or more, ask the lodge for a custom quote and mention that you found them through Hungrytravelfamily. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm, and the daily boat from Bocas Town is built around those times.
  4. Confirm with the 50% deposit (card or bank transfer). Cancelling more than 60 days before check-in refunds the deposit minus a $100 admin fee; 45–60 days forfeits half the deposit; under 45 days forfeits all of it. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.

We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because bookings are tracked only by the code, please do not skip step two.

Our Honest Final Word

A remote lodge turns a group trip into one shared experience: one boat, one table, one beach. It also limits you: three nights minimum, no children under five, no air conditioning except in the villa, and one boat a day. If those limits suit you, few places in Panama make a reunion as easy.
