Panama Eco Lodge All Meals Included: What You Eat at Casa Cayuco

On a remote island there is no restaurant down the road, so food is part of the booking decision. This is what the all-meals-included stay at Casa Cayuco looks like: plant-based cooking, fresh fish at the dock, communal tables, diets and allergies, and what drinks cost extra.

We are a family that plans trips around food as much as scenery, so we read the lodge’s cuisine pages closely. Everything here is from Casa Cayuco’s own published information; we have not eaten there yet, so we describe the system, not individual dishes, and we do not invent menus.

Short answer

A Panama eco lodge with all meals included is exactly what Casa Cayuco offers: a chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack are in the stay price, with predominantly plant-based cooking and fresh fish brought to the dock every evening. Drinks, tips and taxes are extra. Book through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off at Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama.

All meals included: what that means at Casa Cayuco

At Casa Cayuco the stay price covers the whole day of eating. The lodge lists a chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack as included, along with locally grown small-batch coffee and tea every morning. There is no menu to order from and no bill to split at the end of each meal, which is a relief when the nearest alternative is a boat ride away.

The lodge sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, about 30 to 35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town, so eating at the lodge is not a limitation but the plan. That is also why the meal plan matters more here than at a hotel in a town: you will eat nearly every meal at the lodge.

Chef’s choice means the kitchen decides the dishes. If that worries you, the diets and allergies section below explains what the lodge says it can adapt. What is extra is covered later: mainly drinks, tips and tax. We also suggest reading the lodge’s food facts alongside the room you choose, since the meal plan is the same whichever bungalow, suite or villa you book.

Plant-based cooking and fresh fish from the dock

The lodge describes its cuisine as predominantly plant-based, with fresh fish on top. The dishes range from traditional Panamanian to global. Coconut milk, nut butters and juices are made in-house, and a hot sauce, ají chombo, appears at every meal.

The fish is the other half of the story. Local fishermen catch it with hand lines and bring it to the dock by cayuco every evening, so what reaches your plate depends on what came in that day. A cayuco, incidentally, is the traditional dugout canoe carved from a single tree trunk, which is where the lodge gets its name.

  • Mostly plants: good news for vegetarians and people who want to eat lighter.
  • Fish, not meat: the lodge’s description centres on fish; ask about anything else.
  • Made in-house: coconut milk, nut butters and juices.

Why does that matter for a trip? A menu built around plants and the day’s catch should feel lighter than a standard resort menu, and it fits the lodge’s wider approach of buying locally and cutting packaging. It also means variety comes from the season and the sea rather than from a long printed menu. We find that a good trade, as long as you arrive curious rather than expecting a fixed set of dishes. Families with school-age children should also know that kid-friendly options are available on request, so picky eaters are not left with a plate of unfamiliar fish.

How a day of meals works

Meals follow a simple rhythm that suits a remote lodge:

Breakfast on the porch at Casa Cayuco – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama
Breakfast on the porch at Casa Cayuco Photo: Casa Cayuco
  • Morning: coffee and tea, then a chef’s choice breakfast at the communal table
  • Midday: chef’s choice lunch
  • Afternoon: a snack, brought to wherever you are at the lodge, whether that is the beach or a porch
  • Evening: a three-course dinner, with the day’s fish in mind

The afternoon snack is a small detail we like. Rather than asking everyone to stop at one place, the staff bring it to you, so a kayak session or a book on the porch does not need to be interrupted.

If you fly in on the recommended Air Panama flight, the boat reaches the lodge in the afternoon, so your first meal is likely to be the snack or dinner. On the way out, the boat leaves around 12:30 pm, so breakfast is your last meal at the lodge. Plan any food for your onward journey accordingly, and check with the lodge about anything specific on departure day.

Excursion days are the other thing to plan. Trips such as the half-day Zapatillas islands excursion or the full-day Nidori Beach trip are planned at check-in with the in-house guides, so ask then how meals are handled on the days you are out. We do not want to guess at details the lodge has not published. What we can say is that the kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are free, so a lazy day close to the lodge fits neatly around the regular meal times.

Communal tables and dinners on the dock

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at communal tables. That is the lodge’s style: you sit with other guests, which is how many people end up swapping tips on the next day’s excursion. If you prefer to be on your own, ask the lodge what it can arrange.

For dinner there is a large table on the dock for evenings under the stars, where, according to the lodge, stingrays glide past. For special occasions, a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock can be arranged on request. We think that is a good fit for an anniversary or a proposal, and our guide to an anniversary or proposal in Panama covers it.

On New Year’s Eve the lodge serves dinner on the dock, with a champagne toast and fireworks. There is an extra per-person charge for 31 December, and it is included in that night’s rate, so ask when you book if your dates include it.

Where the ingredients come from

A lodge on a remote island has to think carefully about supply, and Casa Cayuco publishes a useful list of where its food comes from:

  • Coconuts from the property, and coconut oil from Salt Creek
  • Cacao from the village, and chocolate from Green Acres Chocolate Farm in Dolphin Bay
  • Organic greens from Kakao Culture Organics in Boquete
  • Finca Panda coffee from the Boquete highlands
  • Limes from Bluff Beach

That supports the lodge’s sustainability story: bulk buying to cut packaging, composting and recycling, and a staff of 28 people from Salt Creek, the neighbouring Ngäbe-Buglé village. We would not call a menu sustainable on that alone, but the sourcing is specific and checkable. Our overview of sustainable hotels in Panama goes further.

Diets, allergies and fussy eaters

The lodge says allergies and diets are accommodated, with one honest caveat: the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, and recipes can be adapted. In plain terms, the kitchen is not a nut-free or gluten-free environment, so if an allergy is severe, tell the lodge before you pay your deposit and ask exactly how they would handle it. We cannot judge that for you, and you should not take our word as a guarantee.

For children, kid-friendly meal options are available on request. Guests must be 5 or older, so you are cooking for school-age children rather than toddlers.

A short list of questions worth asking before you book:

  • Vegetarian or vegan: the cooking is predominantly plant-based, so ask what the kitchen would do at each meal.
  • Gluten or nuts: tell the lodge early; recipes can be adapted.
  • Several dietary needs in one group: list each person’s needs in one message so the kitchen sees the whole picture.
  • Special occasions: a private porch or dock meal is on request, so ask for it when you book rather than on arrival.
  • No fish: mention it so the kitchen can plan your dinner.

Drinks, tips and tax: what is extra

Meals are included. Beverages are not. The lodge has a full bar with well and premium liquors, organic, biodynamic and natural wines from Argentina and Chile, and Panamanian beers. Outside alcohol is not allowed. Drinks are subject to a 7% tax, and the 10% Panamanian hotel tax applies to room charges.

Also extra are staff gratuities, which the lodge recommends at 12 to 15% of the stay, and guided excursions, priced per person. Room rates are not published on the lodge’s site, so check live prices through our booking link for your dates. Our guide to all-inclusive resorts in Panama explains what all-inclusive really means at an eco lodge.

The takeaway: the stay is closer to all-inclusive than most island options, but drinks are a separate line. If you like a glass of wine with dinner, budget for it. For travellers who do not drink alcohol, the included morning coffee and tea help, but beverages in general are listed as not included, so ask the lodge at check-in exactly what is covered and what goes on your bill.

One more practical point: payment on site is accepted in cash, by bank transfer or by credit card, and everything is in US dollars, so settling a bar bill at the end of your stay is straightforward.

Our Honest Final Word

The food is a big reason we chose to partner with Casa Cayuco. All meals, the afternoon snack and the boat transfer are included, the cooking is mostly plants with fish from the dock, and the ingredients come from named local sources. It is not a fit if you need a menu to choose from, a nut-free kitchen, or a bar-hopping evening, and drinks are on top of the stay price.
