Book through our link — the code HungryTravelPanama is pre-filled in the promo box (type it in if you don’t see it).

This guide is built from our own family travels and from Casa Cayuco’s own pages and booking terms — what is included, how to get there and what each room is like come straight from the lodge, never invented.

Short answer

Sustainable hotels in Panama can be recognised by what they measure: where the power comes from, what happens to the water and waste, and who is employed. Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos runs on solar energy, harvests and purifies rainwater, composts and recycles, and employs 28 people from the nearby village of Salt Creek. Use the code HungryTravelPanama for 4% off when you book through our link.

Why 'eco' on a Panama hotel page isn't enough

As travellers from Lapland, where winters make everyone think about energy, we notice when a hotel tells us it’s green and then explains nothing. Panama has superb nature and a lot of marketing. A sustainable hotel should be able to answer plain questions: what powers it, what you drink, where waste goes, who works there and whether the money reaches the neighbourhood.

Here is the checklist we use, followed by how one lodge scores against it based on its own published information. We’ve not audited anything, and we’re not claiming to.

Six questions to ask any eco hotel

  1. Power: Is it solar, hydro, a diesel generator, or grid power? How often does it go out?
  2. Water: Rainwater, a well, or imported bottles? Is wastewater treated?
  3. Waste: Is there composting, recycling, bulk buying?
  4. Food: How much is local, plant-based or seasonal?
  5. People: Do locals work there, and are wages shared with a wider community?
  6. Guests: Does the hotel limit numbers and give guidance on reef-safe sunscreen and wildlife?

Independent labels, such as Tripadvisor’s Green Leaders programme, are one signal; the details above are another.

Casa Cayuco's answers: power, water and waste

On its sustainability page, Casa Cayuco says it is powered by solar energy with no outages and uses clean-burning propane. It harvests and purifies rainwater for the entire property, composts, recycles and buys in bulk to cut packaging, fits low-flow showerheads and stocks organic bath products. The soap and hair care are Punta Coco, handmade in Bocas. The lodge holds a Green Leaders Platinum badge from Tripadvisor.

Scale matters, too. With a maximum of 53 guests across eleven accommodations, the lodge is small enough that the beach never feels like a resort.

Food: plant-forward, locally caught

The kitchen cooks mostly plant-based food with fresh fish that local fishermen catch by hand line and bring to the dock by cayuco each evening. Coconut milk, nut butters and juices are made in-house. Ingredients come from close and far: coconuts from the property, coconut oil from Salt Creek, cacao from the village, chocolate from Green Acres Chocolate Farm in Dolphin Bay, organic greens from Kakao Culture Organics and Finca Panda coffee from the Boquete highlands. Allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten.

People: the village next door

The strongest sustainability fact on the lodge’s pages is human. Casa Cayuco employs 28 people from Salt Creek (Quebrada Sal), a Ngäbe-Buglé village of about 900 people; the lodge says its payroll supports more than 200 villagers. All staff walk to work from the village. A portion of every stay funds village projects, including the Salt Creek Medical Outpost, a two-storey clinic run by the nonprofit Floating Doctors with monthly clinics. Guests take a guided Salt Creek village tour that’s included in the stay, and can bring school or medical supplies through Pack for a Purpose.

Where Casa Cayuco could do better — and what we ask you to do

No remote lodge is impact-free. Guests arrive by plane and boat, and the speedboat uses fuel. Rooms use fans, not air conditioning, except in the villa. We’d encourage visitors to extend their stay beyond the three-night minimum rather than make a short trip, to bring reef-safe sunscreen and natural repellent, and to follow the guides’ advice around wildlife. That’s far from perfect, but it’s honest.

The best test of a sustainable hotel is whether it can explain itself plainly. Casa Cayuco can, and it publishes the details. We partner with it partly for that reason and partly because families love it. Stay longer, pack lightly and respect the reef.
