We are a family that plans around safety before scenery, so we read the lodge’s own statements closely. Nothing here is medical, legal or security advice: for health questions talk to your doctor, and check your government’s current travel advice for Panama before you book. We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco yet.

Short answer

What the lodge says about safety

Casa Cayuco states that it has no safety concerns. It sits on a remote beach at Punta Vieja on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, in a close-knit community, and it describes night watchmen who mainly keep the boats moored. The staff walk to work from the nearby Ngäbe-Buglé village of Salt Creek; the lodge employs 28 people from there. That community connection is a kind of security in itself, because the lodge is a local employer rather than an outsider.

We treat the lodge’s statement as its own view, not a guarantee, and we suggest checking official travel advice for the current situation in any region.

The real risks: sea, boats and jungle

For families, the likelier concerns are not crime but nature and logistics:

  • Water. The beach at the lodge is described as calm and swimmable all year, but sea conditions vary across the archipelago. Surf swell is biggest from November to April, so keep non-swimmers close, and follow the guides’ advice on the day.
  • Boats. Everything beyond the beach is by boat. Ask about life jackets for children each time you go out.
  • Jungle trails. Wear trail or water shoes, bring a flashlight or headlamp and stay on the paths.
  • Wildlife. The lodge lists geckos, golden silk orb-weaver spiders, bats, poison dart frogs and small caimans. Teach kids to look and not touch.
  • Sun and heat. Reef-safe sunscreen, hats and plenty of water.

Health: what the lodge says and what to ask your doctor

According to the lodge’s FAQ, malaria and Zika are not a concern in its region, and hepatitis A and B vaccinations are good to have but not required. Mosquitoes and chitras are around mainly at dusk and dawn, so bring a natural insect repellent; the nets are tightly woven and the bats act as resident bug catchers. This is the lodge’s information, not medical advice. Check with your doctor or travel clinic about vaccinations for your family. The nearest town is Bocas Town, 30–35 minutes by speedboat, which is worth knowing if anyone has a serious medical need. Salt Creek has a medical outpost run by the non-profit Floating Doctors, which holds monthly clinics.

Why the 5+ age rule is a safety rule

Casa Cayuco does not accept guests under 5 years old, explicitly because of the remote location and safety. That limits the lodge for families with toddlers, but it also shapes the atmosphere: other children are old enough to follow rules around water and docks. Kid-friendly meal options are available on request. Our family hotel guide explains why the rule works in practice.

Safety on the way: Bocas Town, taxis and water taxis

Most travellers pass through Bocas Town on arrival. The airport is a 10-minute walk or about a $2 per person taxi from the lodge’s pickup point, and the recommended flights match the daily 2:00 pm boat. Luggage can be stored at the bookkeeper’s office. Wherever you are in a town, ordinary precautions apply: keep valuables close, avoid displaying cash and use official taxis. Our getting-there guide covers the logistics, and the lodge sends a pre-arrival form to its guests.

A family checklist before you go

  1. Check your government’s current travel advice for Panama.
  2. Talk to your doctor about vaccines and any medications.
  3. Take out travel insurance; the lodge strongly recommends it.
  4. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a headlamp, water shoes and a light rain jacket.
  5. Teach children the water and dock rules.
  6. Tell the lodge about allergies, since the kitchen uses nuts and gluten.
  7. Carry some US cash for the village, and keep your documents safe.

Our Honest Final Word

Safety on a remote eco-lodge holiday is mostly about preparation: the right insurance, vaccines checked with your doctor, sensible rules for water and boats, and a lodge that knows its setting. Casa Cayuco’s age rule, its local staff and its own sense of its place all help.

If you want a resort with a hospital next door, this is not it. If you want a calm beach, a village partnership and a lodge that handles logistics, it is a reasonable choice for families with children aged 5 and over.
