It is also one of the rainiest months on the Caribbean coast, so we want you to choose it with open eyes. Everything about Casa Cayuco below comes from the lodge’s own pages and from its owner’s update to us; the rest is our planning advice.

December in Bocas del Toro: the honest weather picture

According to the lodge, Bocas is warm all year at about 27 °C (82 °F). November to January is generally rainier, and November and December are among the wettest months. Rain tends to fall at night and clear by late morning, and forecasts showing thunderstorms every day are typical tropical unpredictability rather than a sign of a washout. Panama is also outside the hurricane belt.

The swell season starts in November and runs to April, so the sea can be livelier than in August to October. For couples that means a green, lush island, dramatic skies and a lively beach rather than a mirror-calm one. If drier weather is your priority, February to April is a better bet; we cover that in our Bocas del Toro in December guide and February guide.

What is new at Casa Cayuco this December

The lodge was closed from 1 May to 31 October 2026 to build a brand-new guest lounge and new beachfront bungalows, and it is open again. According to the owner, two new units are ready for stays from 15 December 2026: the Starfish Beachfront Bungalow, a fully screened-in one-bedroom with a pentagonal layout, a king bed and a deck by the sea (sleeps two), and the two-bedroom Cangrejo Beachfront Cabaña (sleeps four). Photos of both are design renderings, so please treat them as such.

For couples, Starfish is the interesting one: the newest room, on the beach, with a king bed. We wrote a full guide to the Starfish bungalow and one on the new beachfront bungalows.

Romance, lodge-style: dinners, dock and starlight

There is no nightclub here and no schedule. Dinner is a three-course meal at communal tables or on the large table on the dock under the stars, with sting rays gliding past. For special occasions the lodge offers a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock, on request. Food is mostly plant-based with fresh fish caught by local fishermen on hand lines and brought to the dock by cayuco every evening. The bar serves a full range of liquors, organic and natural wines from Argentina and Chile, and Panamanian beers.

Other couple-friendly touches: hammocks over the water, a yoga deck, an in-house massage therapist (book at check-in), and kayaks and paddle boards for a sunset paddle. If you want to mark a proposal or an anniversary, read our anniversary and proposal guide.

Christmas and New Year's Eve at the lodge

For New Year’s Eve, the lodge hosts a dinner on the dock with a champagne toast and fireworks. There is an extra per-person charge for 31 December, included in that night’s rate. If you want to be at the lodge for the festivities, book early, because late December is popular. Our New Year’s Eve guide has the details.

Remember the three-night minimum, the 50% deposit and the cancellation terms: within 45 days of check-in the deposit is forfeited, so if you are booking for this December, you are already inside or near that window. We recommend travel insurance, as does the lodge.

Getting there in December

Most couples fly from Panama City’s Albrook airport to Bocas del Toro in about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends flight 980 in (arriving around 2:00 pm) and flight 981 out (leaving around 2:30 pm), which match its daily boat: a 2:00 pm pickup at the airport, with the return from the lodge around 12:30 pm. Other times are a paid private transfer. The lodge’s pre-arrival form covers details. Our how-to-get-there guide explains every route, including the overnight bus and flights from Costa Rica.

If you have a night in Panama City either side, guests of Casa Cayuco get special rates at the American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo when mentioning the lodge.

Who a December stay is not for

If you need a guaranteed dry fortnight, wait for February to April. If you want nightlife, Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes by boat. If you need air conditioning, only the Estrella De Mar villa has it. And if you are travelling with a baby or small child, note that the lodge accepts guests aged five and over. See our Where to stay in Panama page for the full comparison.

A rainy afternoon, couples-style, and what to pack

Plan for a few showers and you will barely notice them. The lodge has a library, a lounge, a bar and hammocks, and the in-house massage therapist can be booked at check-in, so a grey afternoon can become a slow one. Morning is usually the best time for excursions, because rain tends to clear by late morning; a half-day at the Zapatillas islands (about $80 per person) or the mangrove snorkelling trip ($85) fits well. The village tour of Salt Creek is included in your stay and goes ahead whatever the sky is doing, give or take safety.

For a December packing list, we would bring a light rain jacket, quick-drying clothes, reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a headlamp or flashlight for the paths at night and trail or water shoes. A dry bag for the speedboat is a wise extra. We list the rest in our packing guide.

Finally, remember that the lodge asks guests not to use hair dryers and that outlets are US-style Type A, 110 V. Electricity is solar and available 24/7, so charging cameras and phones is not a problem.
