The five essentials

  1. Reef-safe sunscreen
  2. Natural insect repellent
  3. Flashlight or headlamp
  4. Trail or water shoes
  5. Light rain jacket

Everything else is a bonus.

Clothing for 27 °C and tropical rain

It’s warm all year, about 27 °C (82 °F). Pack light, quick-drying layers, swimwear, a sun hat, long sleeves for dusk and a light jumper for boat rides. Rain tends to fall at night and clear by late morning, so a rain jacket is enough.

Bugs, sun and skin

Mosquitoes and sandflies appear at dusk and dawn; the rooms have tightly woven mosquito nets. Natural repellent is recommended, and so is reef-safe sunscreen to protect the marine park. Geckos, bats, spiders and frogs are normal; bats are the lodge’s resident bug-catchers.

Electronics, power and wifi

Outlets are US Type A, 110 V, and electricity is on 24/7. Hair dryers are discouraged. High-speed wifi is available. Bring a waterproof phone pouch and a dry bag for boat rides.

Money and documents

Panama uses the US dollar. Bring small bills for crafts in Salt Creek and chocolate at the chocolate farm. Payment on site accepts cash, bank transfer and cards. Carry your passport, flight details, booking confirmation and travel insurance, which the lodge strongly recommends.

Give something back

The lodge takes part in Pack for a Purpose: bring school or medical supplies for the Salt Creek community if you have space.

The lodge supplies kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats, and organic coconut soap and hair care are in the bathroom, so don’t pack bulky toiletries.

Packing for the boat and the flight

The scheduled boat ride is about 30–35 minutes, and spray is normal, so keep passports, phones and cameras in a dry bag. Air Panama flights from Albrook to Bocas take about 50 minutes; check your airline’s current baggage limits when you book, as small planes can be strict. Soft duffel bags are easier to stack on a boat than hard suitcases.

If you have time in Bocas Town before the boat, the bookkeeper’s office can hold luggage you won’t need, such as a city outfit, while you stay at the lodge. Ask the lodge for exact instructions in the pre-arrival form.

What the lodge provides, so you can pack less

  • Mosquito nets, ceiling fans and memory foam beds with high thread count sheets
  • Organic coconut soap and hair care, handmade in Bocas
  • Sea kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats
  • Coffee and tea every morning, all meals and an afternoon snack
  • High-speed wifi and 24/7 electricity
