New rooms are exciting and slightly risky. There are no guest reports yet, so we want to be clear about what is solid — the lodge’s own description and opening date — and what is not. We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco ourselves; we researched it in depth before partnering with it. The photos here are design renderings.

Short answer

What the lodge says about Starfish

Casa Cayuco describes Starfish as brand new and inspired by the natural symmetry of a starfish. It is a fully screened-in one-bedroom bungalow with a pentagonal layout and a sweeping roofline that lets in light and ocean breeze. Inside are a king bed and a full bathroom; outside is a spacious deck terrace by the sea.

Why the screens matter

Open-air living is the heart of Casa Cayuco’s appeal, but it is not for everybody. Some couples love the idea of the jungle outside the bed; others wake up thinking about mosquitoes. Starfish gives a middle route: full screens, so insects stay outside, while the roofline lets light and sea breeze in. It is not air-conditioned (only the Estrella De Mar villa has air conditioning), but screened beachfront design is the next best thing for people who dislike bugs. For the other screened options, see our Rana Lodge Suite guide.

Starfish for couples, honeymoons and anniversaries

With one king bed and a sea-facing deck, Starfish is a room for two. It will suit a honeymoon, anniversary or milestone birthday. For those occasions, Casa Cayuco can serve a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock on request. Ask when you arrive.

Compare it with the established couples’ rooms in our honeymoon guide: Pelicano is a thatched-roof beachfront bungalow the lodge calls perfect for honeymooners, and Loro is a canopy-level suite with sea views. Starfish is the newest and the only one of the three that is fully screened.

What a day looks like

Mornings start with locally grown small-batch coffee and tea, then a chef’s-choice breakfast at the communal table. After that you might paddle a kayak, use the free snorkel gear or join a guided excursion. Lunch follows, then an afternoon snack brought wherever you are, and a three-course dinner with plant-forward dishes and fresh fish. The lodge also has an in-house massage therapist and free yoga mats.

Half-day excursions such as Isla Zapatillas ($80) and mangrove snorkelling ($85) are planned at check-in; prices are those listed by the lodge in November 2026 and may change. You can read about Zapatillas in our Isla Zapatillas guide.

New room, honest caveats

Because Starfish opens on 15 December 2026, it has no track record. The pictures show design renderings, and the final finish may differ in small ways. The new guest lounge is part of the same development. If you are booking for a special date, we suggest you do not leave it to the last minute, and you may want travel insurance, which the lodge strongly recommends anyway.

Remember also the standard terms: three-night minimum, 50% deposit, no guests under five, and cancellation rules that become strict at 45 days before check-in.

Weather matters for a December arrival too. In Bocas del Toro, November to January is generally the rainier stretch (December is among the rainiest months), but rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and the temperature averages about 27 °C (82 °F). The biggest surf swell is November to April, and the calmest sea for swimming and snorkelling is August to October, though the protected snorkel spots work all year. Panama is outside the hurricane belt. If you want drier days, February to April is generally the drier window; see our month-by-month guide to choose your month.

The setting around Starfish: Punta Vieja and the marine park

Starfish stands on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja, on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos. The lodge sits between the rainforest and the sea, with a jungle trail that starts right at the lodge. The Zapatillas Islands are ten minutes away by boat, Salt Creek is five minutes by boat (or about thirty minutes on foot) and the whole area lies inside the protected Bastimentos National Marine Park.

That setting is why the lodge works for couples who want nature rather than nightlife. The mornings bring birds and, often, monkeys and sloths in the trees; the evenings bring dinner on the dock. Everything is powered by solar panels with clean-burning propane for the kitchen, rainwater is harvested and purified for the whole property, and about 28 staff walk to work from Salt Creek. A share of every stay supports village projects such as the Salt Creek Medical Outpost. Our guide to sustainable hotels in Panama explains the details.

Who Starfish is not for

We would rather you book the right trip than the wrong one, so here is who Casa Cayuco does not suit:

  • Families with children under 5. The lodge does not accept guests under five, because of the remote location and safety.
  • Anyone who needs air conditioning in the bedroom. Only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan.
  • Travellers who want nightlife. Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes away by boat, and there is one scheduled boat a day.
  • Short stays. The minimum is three nights, and honestly four or five is better.
  • Anyone who wants a room with a long guest-review history. It is brand new.

Getting to Casa Cayuco

Most guests fly from Panama City (Albrook, PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) in about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends Flight 980, which lands around 2:00 pm, and Flight 981 home, leaving about 2:30 pm, because they match the daily boat: pickup at the Bocas airport at 2:00 pm, departure from the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, and the return from Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm. The round-trip transfer is included. The speedboat ride takes about 30–35 minutes through the mangrove islands of the Bastimentos National Marine Park. Other times are possible only as a private transfer for a fee, and early pickups are not available. Our full getting-there guide has the overland and Costa Rica options.

How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount

Casa Cayuco does not publish nightly rates, so the booking page is where you see live prices for your dates. This is how to get our 4% off:

  1. Open our booking link — any button or room name on this page goes to Casa Cayuco’s own Cloudbeds booking engine.
  2. Check that HungryTravelPanama is in the promo box before you search dates. Our link pre-fills it; if the box is empty, type the code in exactly as written.
  3. Choose your dates (3 nights minimum) and Starfish. Starfish opens on 15 December 2026, so pick arrival dates on or after it. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm, and the daily boat from Bocas Town is built around those times.
  4. Confirm with the 50% deposit (card or bank transfer). Cancelling more than 60 days before check-in refunds the deposit minus a $100 admin fee; 45–60 days forfeits half the deposit; under 45 days forfeits all of it. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.

We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because bookings are tracked only by the code, please do not skip step two.

Our Honest Final Word

Starfish is the room we would watch for couples who love the beach but want screens. It combines a king bed, a sea deck and an interesting design, and it is brand new, so the pictures are renderings and the reviews do not exist yet. If you prefer something proven, Pelicano and Loro have been open for longer. If you want the newest beachfront room on the island, this is it.
