We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco over New Year yet — we researched the lodge in depth and partnered with it — so we are not describing a night we spent there. Everything below comes from the lodge’s own pages and booking terms, and we are careful not to invent details the lodge has not published.

Short answer

New Year’s Eve in Bocas del Toro at Casa Cayuco means dinner on the dock, a champagne toast and fireworks. There is an extra per-person charge for 31 December, which is included in that night’s rate, and the minimum stay is three nights, so we would book early. For two we would choose Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama. Book through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

New Year's Eve at Casa Cayuco in a minute

Casa Cayuco is a small eco-lodge on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja, on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town. It is not a party town, which is exactly the point. Instead of clubs and crowds, New Year’s Eve here is a shared, open-air celebration at the lodge.

According to the lodge, the evening is dinner on the dock, a champagne toast and fireworks. There is an extra per-person charge for 31 December, and that charge is included in the rate for that night. The lodge has not published the amount on its site, so we will not guess — check it when you look at live rates for your dates.

For families, there is a sensible side to it too. Without a late-night street scene, the evening suits children aged 5 and over, who can watch the fireworks and be in bed not long after. For couples, it is a very different way to spend the night: a long table on the water, a glass in hand and the sky overhead.

The dock dinner, the toast and the fireworks

Dinner at Casa Cayuco is already a highlight. The kitchen is mostly plant-based, with fresh fish caught by local fishermen with hand lines and brought to the dock by cayuco every evening. Meals are served at communal tables, and there is a large table on the dock for dinners under the stars, where sting rays glide past. On New Year’s Eve, the lodge takes that setting and adds a champagne toast and fireworks.

What we can say honestly: it is a three-course dinner night as usual for the lodge, on the dock, with a toast and fireworks to see the new year in. What we cannot say, because the lodge has not published it, is the timetable, the menu or the exact fireworks display, so we leave those for you to ask. For special occasions, the lodge also arranges a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock on request.

Drinks are not included in the room rate, and there is a full bar with well and premium liquors, natural wines from Argentina and Chile and Panamanian beers. No outside alcohol is allowed.

The setting has a lot going for it. The dock extends over the water, and the lodge’s own description of its dinners is of dining under the stars. Add the champagne toast and the fireworks and you have a good picture of what the lodge is offering, even without a published timetable.

Because the lodge cooks mostly plant-based food and accommodates allergies and diets (its kitchen uses nuts and gluten, and recipes can be adapted), tell the team about any needs when you book rather than on the night.

Three-night minimum: how booking works

The lodge’s minimum stay is three nights, so a stay that includes 31 December needs to run at least three nights. Check-in is at 3:00 pm and check-out at 12:30 pm. A 50% deposit confirms the booking, and the cancellation terms are strict (more than 60 days before check-in the deposit is refunded minus a $100 fee; 45–60 days, half the deposit is forfeited; under 45 days, it is forfeited in full). The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.

We would book early. The lodge has a maximum of 53 guests in total, a holiday week is a popular time to travel and the room you want may not be available if you leave it late. We cannot see availability, so check live dates on the booking page rather than waiting.

Expect the usual extras on top of the rate: staff gratuities (recommended at 12–15% of the stay), drinks, guided excursions, a 10% Panamanian hotel tax on room charges and a 7% tax on excursions and beverages. Our guide to taxes, tipping and cash explains the budgeting in more detail.

One more reason to plan ahead: reaching the lodge involves the daily boat from Bocas Town. The recommended Air Panama flights, 980 in and 981 out, match it, so look at flights at the same time you check rooms. We would consider arriving a day or two before 31 December so the festive night is not also the travel day.

Which room for New Year's Eve: couples and families

All accommodations are open-air in style with a ceiling fan, mosquito net, en-suite bathroom and wifi. Only the Estrella De Mar villa has air conditioning. This is how we would match them to a New Year’s trip:

The two new beachfront units — Starfish Beachfront Bungalow for two and Cangrejo for four — are ready from 15 December 2026, so they are options for a New Year’s stay too. Their photos are design renderings. Read our post on the new beachfront bungalows for more.

Think about the people in the room, not only the beds. For a family with older children, the beachfront bungalows are the easy choice. For a group of friends or two couples, the three-bedroom villa has an en-suite bathroom and a sea-view balcony for each bedroom, plus a kitchen and living space.

Our pick for two: Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow

For a couple, we would book Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama. The lodge calls it the smallest yet most unique of its cabins, with a thatched roof and a step-down bathroom, and recommends it for honeymooners or anyone celebrating a special occasion. The wraparound porch is a good place to read while watching the wildlife around you.

It has one queen bed and sleeps two. That makes it ideal for a quiet start to the year: dinner on the dock, a toast, fireworks and then a short walk along the beach. If you are travelling as a family, look at Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama or Delfín Beachside Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama instead, each for up to five. For more romance ideas, see our best rooms for couples guide.

It also fits the lodge’s own sense of occasion: besides the New Year’s Eve dinner, the team can arrange a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock for special occasions, on request. Ask when you book if you would like to add something personal.

December weather and the new bungalows

A note on the season. According to the lodge’s FAQ, November to January is generally rainier, and December is among the rainiest months. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, but it is wise to plan for the odd wet evening on a night when you want to be on the dock. The biggest surf swell also runs from November to April. We cannot promise a dry midnight.

Pack a light rain jacket, reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent for dusk and dawn, a headlamp and trail or water shoes. We have a whole guide to Bocas del Toro in December, including Christmas.

On the lodge’s side, the new beachfront bungalows are ready for stays from 15 December 2026, and a brand-new guest lounge is being built alongside them. Ask the lodge what will be ready for your dates.

If you are travelling for a holiday that includes Christmas as well as New Year, the lodge’s festive season is a good time to plan a longer stay. A stay of five to seven nights gives you time for the Zapatillas islands, Salt Creek and the jungle trails as well as the party.

Who this New Year's Eve is not for

This is a quiet, open-air night, and it will not suit everyone. It is probably not for you if:

  • You want clubs, bars and street parties — Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes away by boat, and the lodge’s scheduled boat runs once a day.
  • You are travelling with children under 5 — the lodge does not accept guests under 5.
  • You need air conditioning everywhere — only the Estrella De Mar villa has it.
  • You only have one or two nights — the minimum is three.

Getting there: most guests fly Panama City to Bocas del Toro (about 50 minutes) with Air Panama; the lodge recommends flight 980 in and 981 out, matching the daily boat. A night in Panama City first is a good buffer, and our Where to stay in Panama page lists all of our planning guides.

Gratuities, drinks and excursions are not included in the room rate. Bring some cash for crafts in the village, and remember that the US dollar is used throughout Panama. Guests are asked not to use hair dryers.
