Things for Kids to Do at a Bocas del Toro Eco Lodge: Ages 5 and Up
A remote eco lodge does not have a kids’ club, but it can have more adventure than any resort. Here is what children aged five and over can actually do at Casa Cayuco, with real excursion prices and honest limits.

Parents’ first question about a jungle lodge is almost always the same: what will the kids do all day? We agree it is the right question. This guide sticks to what Casa Cayuco publishes on its own pages, and we have not stayed there yet, so where we offer an opinion we say so.
Things for kids to do at a Bocas del Toro eco lodge include kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, jungle trails to spot sloths and red frogs, a village visit and boat trips — all available at Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama for children aged five and over. Kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and the Salt Creek tour are included; other excursions are extra and planned on arrival. Book through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

First: the age rule and what it means
Casa Cayuco accepts guests aged five and over only. The reason the lodge gives is its remote location and safety. That means no babies and no toddlers, and it means the activities below are designed for school-age children. It also means kids can usually join almost everything, because the group is at a similar stage.
If you have a younger child, this lodge is not for you yet; we would rather say so now. Our guide to family hotels in Bocas del Toro explains the age policy in more depth.
Free at the lodge: water toys and beach time
Included in the stay are sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats. Because the lodge describes its beach as calm and swimmable all year round, these are most children’s first stop. Kids can paddle in the shallows, practise standing on a board and snorkel off the beach. The lodge also has a dock with hammocks over the water, a large table for communal dinners and an afternoon snack brought to wherever you are.

In the evenings, sting rays glide past the dock, which children tend to love, and the fishermen bring the catch in by cayuco, the traditional dugout canoe. Our guide to the word cayuco tells the story behind the lodge’s name.
Included: the Salt Creek village tour
Every stay includes a two-hour guided tour of Salt Creek, a Ngäbe-Buglé village of about 900 people reached by boat through a mangrove channel. For children, it is a chance to see a different way of life, walk the boardwalks over the water and learn about the community that works at the lodge: 28 staff from the village walk to work every day. Bring a little cash for crafts. We have a full guide to the Salt Creek visit.

Short excursions kids tend to love
- Casa Cayuco Sendero ($25, 2 hours): jungle loop with poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds, and a fresh coconut halfway.
- Red Frog Trail ($35, 1 hour): a trail through Salt Creek lined with red poison dart frogs.
- Sloth Creek ($40, 1 hour): a boat ride through mangrove channels to look for sloths.
- Monkey Island ($70, 2 hours): a visit to the Monkey Island Foundation, a capuchin rehabilitation centre, led by its founder.
- Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70, half day): see how cacao becomes chocolate.
Prices are per person, as listed on the lodge’s website in November 2026, and may change. Read more in our guides to jungle trails and red frogs and Monkey Island.

Bigger days out for older children and teens
For kids who like a proper adventure, there is the Isla Zapatillas half day ($80) with beaches and guided snorkelling, the mangrove snorkelling trip ($85), the Bat Cave Tour ($95) with a cayuco ride up a creek and a one-kilometre jungle hike with headlamps, and the full-day Nidori Beach trip ($135, three-person minimum). Surfing ($75, two-person minimum) is for strong swimmers and confident surfers only. Teens may like our teens guide.
You do not need to book any of these in advance; the guides plan them with you on arrival.

Quiet moments: library, yoga and creativity
Not every hour should be a mission. The lodge has a guest library, a lounge, hammocks and a yoga deck, and an in-house massage therapist for the grown-ups. Kids can read, draw or play cards on the covered porch, especially if rain rolls in. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, according to the lodge.
Pack a few non-screen items such as books, cards and a small notebook for nature sketches; wifi is high-speed, but part of the point is to unplug.

A sample day for a family with school-age kids
The lodge does not run a fixed timetable, so every day is built with the guides. Here is the kind of day we would aim for. It is our own suggestion, not an official schedule.
| Time of day | Activity |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Locally grown coffee or tea for the adults, a short walk on the beach or the Sendero trail for wildlife |
| Breakfast | Chef’s-choice breakfast at the communal table; ask about kid-friendly options |
| Late morning | An excursion: Sloth Creek, Salt Creek village tour or a snorkelling trip |
| Lunch and afternoon | Lunch, then kayaks, paddle boards or hammocks; afternoon snack delivered to wherever you are |
| Evening | Swim, a three-course dinner (possibly on the dock) and a library or card game |
With all meals included, you are not negotiating restaurants with hungry children, which is a quiet relief on holiday. We cover what is on the table in our guide to the food.
Parent tips: packing and safety for kids
A few practical things we would do before a trip like this. First, pack reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent (mosquitoes appear at dusk and dawn), trail or water shoes, a light rain jacket and a small headlamp or flashlight for each child. Second, let children try on snorkel masks at home so that fit and fear are sorted before the boat. Third, talk to the guides on arrival about each child’s swimming level, so excursions are matched to ability. The lodge also notes that there are geckos, golden silk orb-weaver spiders, bats, poison dart frogs and small caimans on the property; a quick wildlife briefing at home makes them interesting rather than frightening.
Never touch poison dart frogs, and keep a respectful distance from all wildlife. Finally, take a copy of your travel insurance details: the lodge strongly recommends insurance, and the property is remote. See the full packing list for the rest.
