Bocas del Toro with Teens: Where to Stay and What to Do

Teenagers want three things on holiday: something to do, some independence and decent wifi. Remote jungle lodges can deliver two of those and surprise you with the third. We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco yet, so this guide is built from the lodge’s own pages and booking terms, plus our planning experience as a family.

Short answer

Bocas del Toro with teens works best at a lodge with activities built in, and Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos is our pick. Teens can kayak, paddle board, snorkel, hike jungle trails to spot red poison dart frogs, try surfing outings, and the lodge says it has high-speed wifi. Why this works for teens

The lodge is open to guests aged 5 and over, so older children and teenagers are right in its sweet spot. Kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats are included, and everything else is planned on arrival with in-house guides. There is no screen-time battle because there is simply more to do outside. At the same time, the lodge has high-speed wifi, according to its description of the rooms, so a quick message home is possible.

Casa Cayuco hosts up to 53 guests, so teens meet other families and travellers at communal tables without feeling lost in a big resort.

Adventures that teens usually love

  • Surfing outing ($75): less-known breaks in the marine park, for confident surfers and strong swimmers, two-person minimum.
  • Nidori Beach ($135): full day, one hour by boat, short hike, surf for all levels, three-person minimum.
  • Bat Cave Tour ($95): cayuco up a creek, a 1 km jungle hike, headlamps.
  • Mangrove snorkelling ($85) and Isla Zapatillas ($80).
  • Lionfish spearing: two hours with a local guide.
  • Red Frog Trail ($35) and Caiman Trail ($35).

Prices are per person as listed on casacayuco.com in November 2026 and may change. Included with every stay is a guided tour of Salt Creek village, about two hours.

Rooms for a family with teens

If you want separate spaces, booking two nearby rooms or the villa gives teens independence. See our Panama with kids guide and the family-of-five post for more.

Phones, wifi and digital detox

The lodge lists high-speed wifi as a room feature. That makes it a lodge where you can stay connected if you must, yet the setting makes switching off easy. Many families agree on a simple rule: phones for photos and evenings only. The guest library, the dock and the hammocks are the real draw for downtime.

Food for teenage appetites

All meals are included: chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack. Cuisine is predominantly plant-based, with fresh fish from local fishermen. Kid-friendly options are available on request, and allergies and diets can be accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten. Drinks are extra, and it is a full bar, so keep an eye on what teens order.

Safety and common sense

The lodge describes no safety concerns; it is remote and close-knit, with watchmen mainly looking after boats. Still, water and jungle need respect: life jackets in boats, headlamps on paths at night, reef-safe sunscreen and natural repellent. Talk with your teen about swimming limits.

Who this is not for

Teens who want nightlife, shopping and big-city options will find Bocas Town 30–35 minutes away by boat. Those who need air conditioning everywhere will only find it in the villa. Guests under five are not allowed, and the minimum stay is three nights.

A four-night plan for a family with teens

Excursions are planned on arrival, so this is an example only, based on the lodge’s listed activities:

Casa Cayuco's boat at sunset – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama
Casa Cayuco's boat at sunset Photo: Casa Cayuco
  • Day 1: boat transfer from Bocas Town, settle in, kayak and paddle board off the beach, first dinner on the dock.
  • Day 2: half day at Isla Zapatillas with snorkelling, then the included Salt Creek village tour.
  • Day 3: surf outing for the confident, or Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop and Sloth Creek for the rest; yoga or a massage in the afternoon.
  • Day 4: Bat Cave Tour or the chocolate farm, a last swim and a sunset on the dock.
  • Departure: boat back around 12:30 pm for the afternoon flight.

The minimum stay is three nights, but with teens we would book at least four, so a rainy day does not take over the plan. See how many nights in Bocas del Toro.

The treehouse, honestly

The Mono is the lodge’s most private accommodation, 40 feet up in the canopy. The first floor is open-air with up to four twin beds and an en-suite bathroom; the second level is fully screened in with a king bed and lounge space, and a large covered porch looks over the rainforest. Because stairs and height are part of the experience, it is not suited to anyone with mobility difficulties, and parents of younger children should consider the staircase. For teens it is often the highlight of the trip. Our treehouse guide has the full story.
