Isla Bastimentos is mostly rainforest, and the best way to meet it is on foot. Casa Cayuco’s adventure page lists five trail experiences, from a 2-hour loop that starts at the lodge to a half-day hike to a beach on the other side of the island. We have not walked them yet, so this is the lodge’s description, with prices as listed in November 2026 (they may change). If you prefer wildlife by boat, see our Salt Creek guide.

Red poison dart frogs: what to know

Poison dart frogs are tiny and brightly coloured, and Bastimentos is known for them. The Red Frog Trail is a short walk through Salt Creek to a trail full of red frogs. Watch them, photograph them with a gentle zoom, and do not touch them or pick them up: that protects both you and the frogs. The lodge also says poison dart frogs are among the creatures you may see around the property.

Walking safely in rainforest

Wear closed trail shoes or water shoes, bring natural insect repellent and a light rain jacket, and carry water. A headlamp is useful for evening walks. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, so mornings are often the best time for hiking; trails can be muddy after rain. Stay with the guide and do not stray from the path.

What you may meet

The lodge mentions sloths, monkeys, birds, caimans, bats and frogs, as well as geckos and golden silk orb-weaver spiders. Our sloth guide and birding guide go further. Small caimans live in the mangroves and are best seen from the Caiman Trail.

Planning a hiking stay

Book at least four nights if you want to hike and still have time for snorkelling and the Zapatillas islands. February to April is generally drier. Children must be 5 or older. You do not need to book hikes in advance; the lodge plans them at check-in.

Who this suits and who it does not

It suits families with active children aged five and above, couples who like walking and curious travellers. It does not suit anyone who dislikes mud, insects or heat; the lodge is a rainforest lodge.
