If you have children, your trip dates are decided by the school calendar, not the weather. For families in the northern hemisphere that usually means July and August, the exact months when many people assume the tropics are a bad idea. Bocas del Toro turns out to be more interesting than that. We live in Finnish Lapland, where our own summer is short and bright, so we understand the pull of a family trip in those weeks. The weather notes below come from Casa Cayuco’s FAQ; we have not stayed at the lodge yet and cannot promise any particular day’s weather.

Short answer

For summer holidays in Panama, August is the better month in Bocas del Toro, with calmer seas than July, though the Caribbean coast is warm and green all summer. According to the lodge, July is among the rainiest months and August to October the calmest for swimming and snorkelling. What summer is like in Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro is warm all year, averaging about 27 °C (82 °F). The lodge groups the year like this: February to April and August to October are generally drier, with February, March, September and October the driest; May to July and November to January are rainier, with June, July, November and December the rainiest. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, so a wet month is not the same as a wet day.

Two details make summer more attractive than it sounds. First, August to October is the calmest period for swimming and snorkelling, which is what a family with kids wants. Second, the biggest Caribbean surf swell runs from November to April, so summer is the quiet season for surfers and the reef and beach are more relaxed. The lodge also notes Panama is outside the hurricane belt.

If your school holidays force a choice, we would pick August. If you are stuck with July, plan mornings for the outdoors, keep afternoons loose and pack a light rain jacket. Both months are more about green rainforest, active wildlife and an uncrowded feel than about unbroken sunshine.

One caution: we cannot tell you how busy the lodge will be in summer 2027, or what the room availability looks like. Check live availability on the booking page as early as you can.

It also helps to think about what kind of summer holiday you want. A family that loves wet-season rainforest, with its loud frogs, dripping greenery and dramatic skies, may actually prefer July. A family whose idea of a Caribbean break is long days of swimming from the beach will be happier in late August, when the sea is calmer and the dry spells tend to be longer. Neither month is a mistake; they just reward different expectations. If your school holiday spans both, aim for the end of July into August and keep your days flexible.

Another practical point is the daily rhythm. Because rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, the most reliable window for outdoor excursions is the morning. Plan the boat trips, the snorkelling and the jungle walks before lunch, and keep the afternoons for the porch, a swim, a chocolate-farm visit or a nap. Families who try to schedule every hour tend to be frustrated; families who treat the weather as part of the experience tend to remember the trip fondly.

What the kids can do in summer

The lodge has a calm, swimmable beach all year and includes sea kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and a guided tour of Salt Creek village. Add these excursions, planned on arrival with the in-house guides (prices per person as listed by the lodge in November 2026, subject to change):

  • Isla Zapatillas, half day with snorkelling: $80
  • Mangrove snorkelling, half day: $85
  • Sloth Creek boat ride, 1 hour: $40
  • Monkey Island, 2 hours: $70
  • Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour, half day: $70
  • Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop, 2 hours: $25
  • Red Frog Trail, 1 hour: $35

August calm suits the Zapatillas trip and snorkelling especially well. On wetter days, the chocolate farm and the village tour are good plan Bs. Teenagers may enjoy a guided trip to the Bat Cave (half day, $95 per person, with a creek by cayuco and a 1 km jungle hike with headlamps), which is described in our Bat Cave and Monkey Island guide. Getting there in summer

The route does not change with the season. Fly to Panama City, take the roughly 50-minute Air Panama flight from Albrook Airport to Bocas del Toro (Casa Cayuco recommends Flight 980 in and 981 out), and ride the included scheduled boat, which leaves Bocas Town around 3:00 pm for the 30–35 minute trip. The return boat leaves the lodge about 12:30 pm. Details in our getting-there guide.

In rainy periods, build slack into your journey, such as an extra night in Panama City before flying home, so that a delayed flight does not wreck your international connection.

Packing for a green-season family trip

  • Light rain jackets for everyone and a dry bag for cameras and phones
  • Quick-dry clothes and spare swimwear, since things take longer to dry in humid weather
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and natural insect repellent for dusk and dawn
  • Water shoes for the beach and trails, and a headlamp
  • Books, cards and travel games for downtime
