Bat Cave and Monkey Island Tours: Where to Stay in Bocas del Toro

Two of the most talked-about wildlife excursions near Casa Cayuco are a creek-and-cave trip to a bat cave and a visit to a capuchin monkey sanctuary. Here is what the lodge says about each, what they cost, and how to build them into a stay.

Wildlife is the reason many families pick Bocas del Toro, and the archipelago delivers it in several forms. Casa Cayuco’s adventure page lists two half-day-or-shorter trips that people often ask us about: the Bat Cave Tour and the Monkey Island visit. We have not done either; the details below come from the lodge’s own page, with prices as listed in November 2026 (they may change). If you want the full wildlife picture, read our sloth guide and our birding guide.

Short answer

The Bat Cave Tour ($95 per person, half day) and the Monkey Island visit ($70 per person, 2 hours) are two of the wildlife excursions you can add to a stay at Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos. The Bat Cave Tour: what the lodge says

The Bat Cave Tour is a half-day excursion that starts from Bahía Honda village. You travel by cayuco up a creek and then walk about 1 km through jungle to the cave, with headlamps. The lodge lists it at $95 per person. It is a more adventurous outing than most, so wear trail shoes, bring a headlamp or flashlight, and expect muddy paths. As with all excursions, check at the lodge for current conditions, as creek levels and weather can change plans.

Monkey Island: what the lodge says

The Monkey Island visit is a 2-hour excursion to the Monkey Island Foundation, a rehabilitation centre for capuchin monkeys, led by its founder, Francine. The lodge lists it at $70 per person. It is a good fit for families with children aged five and above who want close wildlife encounters with a conservation story attached. The lodge describes the Foundation as rehabilitation work, so please follow the guides’ instructions and treat the animals respectfully.

How these fit with other excursions

The lodge’s adventure page lists many more trips, all per person and planned at check-in: Isla Zapatillas ($80, half day), Mangrove Snorkeling ($85), Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70), Sloth Creek ($40, 1 hour), Surfing ($75), Nidori Beach ($135), Casa Cayuco Sendero ($25), Caiman Trail ($35), Pelicano Trail ($45) and Red Frog Trail ($35). The Salt Creek village tour is included with every stay. A four-night visit leaves room for three or four of these.

A sample four-night wildlife plan

  • Day 1: arrive by the 3 pm boat, swim, and enjoy dinner on the dock.
  • Day 2: Salt Creek village tour (included), then the Sloth Creek boat ride.
  • Day 3: Monkey Island in the morning, kayaking in the afternoon.
  • Day 4: Bat Cave Tour, a long half day.
  • Day 5: a slow morning, then the boat back at around 12:30 pm.

The lodge advises that no booking is needed in advance, though we would mention your priorities when you arrive.

What to bring and who it suits

Bring trail or water shoes, a headlamp, natural insect repellent, reef-safe sunscreen and a light rain jacket. The Bat Cave trip is for those comfortable with a creek boat, mud and a cave; Monkey Island is gentler. Children must be 5 or older to stay at the lodge, and some excursions have their own demands, so ask the guides at check-in. See our packing list.
