We live in Finnish Lapland, where February means snow and a short winter holiday. A week of warm sea and rainforest is exactly the contrast many families look for at that time of year. The weather and lodge facts below come from Casa Cayuco’s own pages. School calendars differ from country to country, so check yours for the exact dates.

Short answer

February half-term in Panama is a good bet for a family beach week: February is among the driest months in Bocas del Toro, the average temperature is about 27 °C (82 °F), and the sea is good for swimming and snorkelling. Why February works for families

According to the lodge, February to April and August to October are generally the drier seasons in Bocas del Toro, and February and March are among the driest months. Rain, when it comes, usually falls at night and clears by late morning. Panama is also outside the hurricane belt. The average temperature stays near 27 °C (82 °F) all year, so a winter-break week is warm, not scorching.

The trade-off is the sea. The biggest surf swell is from November to April, and the calmest water for swimming and snorkelling is August to October. Casa Cayuco’s beach is calm and swimmable all year, and protected snorkel spots work year-round, but ocean-facing breaks can be bigger in February. See our Bocas del Toro in February guide for more.

Book early for half-term weeks

Casa Cayuco takes up to 53 guests in total, so school-holiday weeks can fill. The lodge does not publish how full a given week is, so we would not guess. Check live availability through our link as soon as your school dates are fixed. The minimum stay is three nights, and a family week of five to seven nights gives you time for several excursions. Our how many nights post helps you decide.

A kid-friendly week at the lodge

The lodge says it welcomes guests aged 5 and over. Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are included, and a jungle trail starts at the lodge. The Salt Creek village tour is included, and there is a long list of family-friendly excursions (prices listed per person in November 2026, which may change):

Getting there from a winter-break country

Most families fly into Panama City, then take the roughly 50-minute Air Panama flight to Bocas del Toro. The lodge recommends flight 980 in (landing around 2:00 pm) and flight 981 out (leaving around 2:30 pm), to match its single daily boat. A night in Panama City on the way in or out softens the jet lag. We have market guides for the US, Canada, the UK and the Nordics.

What to pack

  • Reef-safe sunscreen and natural insect repellent
  • A flashlight or headlamp
  • Trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket
  • Some US cash for crafts and chocolate (Panama uses US dollars)
  • School or medical supplies for Salt Creek through Pack for a Purpose, if you can

Our packing list has the rest. Do not bring a hair dryer; guests are asked not to use them.

Who this trip is not for

Casa Cayuco does not take children under 5, so a family with a toddler or baby will need to wait or choose differently. The rooms are open-air with fans (only the villa has air conditioning), Bocas Town is a 30–35 minute boat away, and there is a three-night minimum.
