Bocas del Toro from the UK: Flights, Jet Lag and Where to Stay
Getting from Britain to a remote Caribbean island lodge takes planning, but it is more straightforward than it sounds. Here is how we would plan the trip, and why Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow is our pick for a family.

Readers in Britain ask us how the journey works, so here is our planning guide. It draws on the lodge’s published information and our research; we have not stayed yet.
Bocas del Toro from the UK means a long-haul flight, usually with a connection, to Panama City, then a short 50-minute domestic hop to Bocas and a boat to the lodge. The route in plain English
We will not quote airlines or fares from Britain, because they change. In general, you fly long-haul from the UK to Panama City’s Tocumen airport (PTY), usually with a connection. From there, most guests transfer to Albrook airport (PAC) in the city for the domestic flight to Bocas del Toro (BOC), about 50 minutes with Air Panama. Fly Trip also flies daily, according to the lodge, and Blue Skies offers private charters.
At Bocas, the lodge’s speedboat takes you to Punta Vieja on Isla Bastimentos in around 30–35 minutes. For the detailed steps, see our getting-there guide.
Timing your flights with the lodge boat
This is the part that catches people out. There is one scheduled boat transfer a day, included in your stay. The pickup is at 2:00 pm at Bocas airport for the recommended Air Panama flight 980, which arrives around 2:00 pm, with the boat leaving Bocas Town at 3:00 pm. The return from Casa Cayuco is around 12:30 pm, matching flight 981 leaving Bocas around 2:30 pm. Other times mean a private transfer for a fee, and early pickups are not available.

For most British travellers that means arriving in Panama City a day early, sleeping there and taking the morning flight to Bocas. Do not book a tight same-day connection from a transatlantic flight; delays happen.
Jet lag and a day in Panama City
Panama is on a time zone several hours behind the UK, and we suggest checking the exact difference for your dates because of British summer time. A night or two in Panama City before heading to the islands softens the transition. Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo when they mention the lodge, and the lodge lists Hobby Pro Tours as an English-speaking driver and guide.
Our 7-day Panama City and Bocas itinerary shows how we would combine the two. On the return, build in a buffer before your international flight home, as flight 981 leaves Bocas about 2:30 pm.
Why we would pick Tortuga for a UK family
Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is a beachfront bungalow with an open-air layout, an en-suite bathroom and a large covered porch where you can watch the waves. It sleeps five, with one queen bed and up to three twin beds, which suits a family with children aged 5 and over; the lodge does not accept younger ones. The bedroom is open-air with a fan and a mosquito net, rather than air-conditioned.

It is a long way for a family, so we like that all meals, snacks and the boat from Bocas Town are included. Kid-friendly meal options are available on request.
What to budget besides the flights
We cannot give room rates, as they are not published; check live prices through our link. What we can tell you is what is extra, in dollars, since Panama uses US currency. Plan for the 10% hotel tax on room charges, a 7% tax on excursions and drinks, staff tips of 12–15% of the stay (recommended), drinks from the bar, and guided excursions: Isla Zapatillas is $80 per person and mangrove snorkelling $85, for example.

Insurance, health and what to pack
The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance, and the deposit rules make it even more sensible: cancelling more than 60 days out refunds the deposit minus a $100 admin fee, closer in you lose some or all of it. Check that your UK policy covers a remote island and any activities. For vaccinations, speak to your GP or travel clinic; the lodge says malaria and Zika are not a concern in its region, but that is not medical advice.
Pack for a hot, humid, open-air stay: reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a headlamp, water shoes and a light rain jacket. The lodge uses US-style sockets (110 V), so bring a UK-to-US adapter, and see our full packing list.
A sample timeline from Britain
This is an illustration, not a schedule, because flight times change. Day one: a long-haul flight from the UK, usually with a connection, arriving in Panama City in the evening or night. Sleep in the city. Day two: a relaxed morning, a taxi or Uber to Albrook airport and the Air Panama flight to Bocas, landing around 2:00 pm. The captain meets you with a sign, and the boat reaches the lodge for a late-afternoon check-in.

You then stay three, four or five nights. On departure day, the boat leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm, you fly out of Bocas at about 2:30 pm and spend a night in Panama City before your long-haul flight home. That adds up to a trip of at least a week door to door, which is why we do not recommend squeezing it into a long weekend.
If you are combining Panama with another trip
Many British travellers pair Bocas with other parts of Panama or with Costa Rica. From Costa Rica, the lodge mentions Sansa flights from San José to Bocas, currently on Tuesdays and Thursdays, about 50 minutes, or the Caribe Shuttle overland. From the highland town of Boquete, a bus transfer via Almirante takes around four hours including the water taxi.
A cheaper overland option from Panama City is the overnight bus to Almirante, leaving at 8 pm and arriving at 6 am, then a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. It saves money but costs sleep, so we would not choose it straight after a transatlantic flight.
While waiting for your boat in Bocas Town, the lodge suggests Bibi’s on the Beach or La Buga on the water, and the bookkeeper’s office can store luggage.
One more tip for British travellers: tell your bank you are travelling, carry a little cash in US dollars for small purchases, and keep your passport and the lodge’s pre-arrival form handy. Entry rules change, so check the current requirements for UK passport holders on the official government travel advice pages before you book flights, rather than relying on a blog post, including ours.
Finally, remember that the boat is the only scheduled link to the lodge each day. If a flight is delayed or cancelled, message the lodge as soon as you can, and ask what a private transfer would cost.
When to go and how long to stay
The calmest sea is August to October, the driest months are February to April plus August to October, and the biggest surf swell is November to April. Rain mostly falls at night. Given the journey from Britain, we would not go for fewer than four or five nights, although the minimum stay is 3 nights. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm.
Half-term and summer holidays book up, so reserve early; the 50% deposit confirms your stay.

FAQ

Is there a direct flight from the UK to Bocas?
We do not know of any and cannot confirm schedules. Check with your airline or travel agent. Most guests connect in Panama City, and the lodge recommends Air Panama between Albrook and Bocas. Ask your travel agent for the best connection through a hub airport, and add a night in Panama City.
What time should my flight arrive for the lodge boat?
The lodge’s recommended Air Panama flight 980 arrives around 2:00 pm, matching the 2:00 pm airport pickup. Other times need a private transfer for a fee, and the lodge cannot offer early pickups. Fly Trip also flies daily with varying times, so check the schedule against the boat before buying.
Should I stay in Panama City first?
We would, for at least one night, to recover from the long-haul flight and avoid missing the daily boat. Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo when they mention the lodge. It also makes the next morning’s flight to Bocas much less stressful.
What currency do I need?
Panama uses US dollars. Bring some cash for craft purchases in Salt Creek village and chocolate at the farm. The lodge accepts cash, bank transfer or credit card for payment on site. The lodge also accepts credit cards for payment on site.
Is travel insurance really necessary?
The lodge strongly recommends it. With a 50% deposit and strict cancellation terms, plus a remote location, we would not travel from the UK without cover for cancellation, medical costs and evacuation. Check that it covers adventure activities such as snorkelling or surfing if you plan to book them.
