Short answer

January is one of the best months for a wedding in Rovaniemi if you love snow, candlelight and the northern lights, and one of the coldest. Expect temperatures around −10 to −20 °C, sometimes lower, brief soft daylight, and the most stable ice of the year, so the Arctic SnowHotel’s ice chapel is at its best. Through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, we plan Weddings in this season from Elopement in Lapland to full planning. Book 8–12 months ahead for January and February, start your legal paperwork three to four months before, and read Ice Hotel Wedding in Lapland, Igloo Wedding in Lapland and Winter Wedding in Lapland for details.

What January Is Actually Like

January sits in the middle of the polar-night season. Daylight is short and soft: a long blue twilight rather than a bright day, and the sun stays very low in early January before the light slowly returns through the month. For a wedding this is a gift for photographs, because everything happens in a blue-and-gold glow, and a hardship for timelines, because the usable light is only a few hours.

It helps to think of January as a stage with a very short matinee and a long evening performance. The outdoor portraits happen in the middle of the day, in light that is soft and pink-blue and flattering to everyone. After that, the day moves indoors to candlelight, a warm dinner and, if the sky allows, a few minutes outside under the aurora. Couples who enjoy the idea of a slow, glowing, indoor-outdoor day tend to love it. Couples who dream of a long outdoor afternoon are usually happier in March or April.

Temperatures are usually between about −10 and −20 °C, and can drop to −30 °C in a cold spell. Snow is typical, ice is thick and stable, and the northern lights are at their best from September to March. Our guide to the January light and cold is written for proposals, but the weather is the same for weddings.

Why January Suits an Ice Chapel Wedding

Ice venues open roughly from December to March, and January and February give the most stable ice and the best aurora chances. The Arctic SnowHotel’s ice chapel is about 30 minutes from Rovaniemi city centre and has hosted hundreds of weddings. The interior is around −5 °C, ceremonies usually last 20–30 minutes, and afterwards reindeer hides, blankets and warm drinks follow, with a heated reception space for the next part. See Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos for the venue and our full Ice Chapel wedding guide for the day itself.

The styling is built on candles along the aisle and altar, winter roses, eucalyptus, dried and preserved greenery, and faux furs and wool blankets on the ice seating. Fresh flowers do not survive the cold, so we use high-quality artificial and preserved flowers, arranged in our Rovaniemi studio.

Other Venues That Work in January

Not every couple wants an ice chapel, and January has other good options.

  • Glass igloos. Heated to room temperature, typically for 2–30 guests, sited for aurora viewing. A licensed Finnish officiant can hold a civil ceremony inside. Read Igloo Wedding in Lapland.
  • Forest lodge. Invisible Forest Lodge has glass-dome dinners among the snowy trees, with heated interiors.
  • Lakeside resort. Silver Birch Resort has cabins, a restaurant and a lakeside setting.
  • Hilltop. Aurora Hill Resort sits on Rovaniemi’s highest hill.
  • The wilderness. A short ceremony in the forest or on a frozen lake, with fire pits, blankets and warm drinks nearby. See Elopement in Lapland.

The rule we follow is that the outdoor part is brief, around 15–20 minutes, and the warm space is close by. A January wedding is a few intense minutes outside and a long, cosy time inside.

A January Timeline Built Around the Light

Daylight decides the order of the day. Here is a template, which we adjust for your venue, guest count and the exact date.

TimeWhat happens
MorningHair, make-up and dressing indoors; the venue is warm

Our winter wedding day timeline goes through each hour in detail.

What to Wear in January

Plan the outfit around three layers: a thermal base layer, the wedding outfit and an outer layer you can slip off for the photographs. For the ice chapel, long sleeves in velvet, brocade or lined satin work well. Outside temperatures can be below −20 °C, so insulated boots, a faux-fur wrap or cape and warm gloves are practical. Our guide to dress and suit in the cold covers every detail, and our guest guide helps with what your guests should bring.

Planning and Paperwork: What to Do and When

Finland allows foreign nationals to marry, with no residency requirement and no waiting period. You apply for an examination of impediments through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, which typically takes about seven working days and can take several weeks for international applicants, for a fee of around €60. You need valid passports and a certificate of no impediment from your home country, plus any divorce decree or death certificate if previously married, and documents translated into Finnish, Swedish or English; some countries require an apostille. A civil ceremony is performed by a district court judge or other authorised official at almost any location, and can be conducted in English. Start collecting documents three to four months before your wedding date. Our guide to getting married in Finland explains the steps, and Getting Married in Finland is the legal overview.

Many couples choose to complete legal formalities at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Lapland. Our comparison of symbolic and legal ceremonies helps you choose.

Guests, Activities and the Days Around the Wedding

A January wedding is rarely just one day. Most couples add a few days either side, because guests have travelled a long way and the setting deserves it. Winter activities for guests include husky sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer sleigh rides, sauna and northern lights tours, and a wedding can be built around one of them: a reindeer sleigh for the couple, or a husky ride after the ceremony. Our guides to the husky wedding and the reindeer sleigh wedding describe how it works.

For guests, a few practical rules help. Tell them early that the outdoor part is short, that dressing in layers is essential, and that the evening is warm. Offer a simple packing list, and suggest they book their own aurora tour for a different night. Travel is also easier than many people expect: Rovaniemi has direct flights from Helsinki and seasonal connections from several European cities, and the airport is about ten minutes from town. Return flights from most European cities cost roughly €150–€500 per person, and accommodation ranges from guesthouses at €80–€150 per night to glass igloos and resort suites at €300–€800.

If you are planning a wedding for a larger group, look at our multi-day programme guide. If it is just the two of you, Elopement in Lapland is the simplest way to do January, and we can add a photographer, a private dinner or a reindeer sleigh ride.

After the wedding, the trip continues as a honeymoon. Our honeymoon guide and Honeymoon in Lapland cover cabins, sauna evenings and aurora nights.

Cost: What a January Wedding Can Cost

Lapland weddings range from about €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more for a larger celebration, and €10,000–€20,000 is typical for a beautifully styled event for 20–50 guests. A cabin or glass igloo for an intimate ceremony may cost €500–€1,500 for the day, while hotel or resort event spaces run €2,000–€8,000. Styling packages run €1,500–€5,000, with elopement styling from around €800. Photography for full-day coverage is €1,500–€4,000. These are broad ranges, and January and February are peak aurora season, so demand is higher. See our honest budget guide and Lapland Wedding Cost, and keep a contingency of around 10%.

FAQ

How cold is January in Rovaniemi?

Usually about −10 to −20 °C, and sometimes down to −30 °C. Outdoor ceremonies are kept brief, 15–20 minutes, with warm spaces, fire pits and blankets nearby.

Is it dark all day in January?

It is the polar-night season, so daylight is short and soft, mostly a blue twilight. It is excellent for photographs, and we plan the timeline around the light.

Can we see the northern lights at our wedding?

They are possible, and January is one of the best months, but they cannot be promised. Glass igloo venues are sited for viewing.

How far ahead should we book?

8–12 months for January and February, especially for premium venues like the Arctic SnowHotel.

Do we need to live in Finland to marry there?

No. Finland has no residency requirement, and both partners can be foreign nationals. You need an examination of impediments, which takes about seven working days or longer.

What does a January wedding cost?

From about €5,000 for an intimate elopement to €30,000 or more for a larger one; €10,000–€20,000 is typical for 20–50 guests.

Our Honest Final Word

January is the month for couples who want snow, candlelight and a sense of being at the top of the world. It is cold, it is dark for most of the day, and it asks for planning around the light and the warmth. In return you get thick ice, a chapel that glows from inside and the best chance of the aurora.

We plan these weddings as our own business, and we would be glad to plan yours. Write to us through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings, and start with Ice Hotel Wedding in Lapland, Igloo Wedding in Lapland and Elopement in Lapland.
