An Ice Chapel Wedding at the Arctic SnowHotel: What the Day Looks Like, What It Costs and How to Plan It

A wedding in a chapel carved from ice is one of the most remembered things you can do in Rovaniemi, and one of the most misunderstood. We run Rovaniemi Weddings, so we plan these days. Here is the real timeline, the temperatures, the legal side for foreign couples, and the questions we answer every winter.

Short answer

An ice chapel wedding in Rovaniemi means a short, candle-lit ceremony in the Ice Chapel of the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos in Sinettä, about 30 minutes from the city centre. The chapel is rebuilt each winter and open from roughly December to March, ceremonies last about 20–30 minutes, the interior is around −5 °C, and the reception moves to a warm restaurant or log cabin nearby. Plan 8–12 months ahead for January–February. We run Ice Hotel Wedding in Lapland planning through Rovaniemi Weddings, and the legal side for foreign couples is covered in Getting Married in Finland. What an Ice Chapel Wedding Actually Is

The Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos is carved by hand from river ice and compressed snow every November and opens to visitors in December. It has an ice altar and snow-block seating draped in reindeer hides, and candlelight glows through the frozen walls. It has hosted hundreds of weddings, and it melts again in the spring.

A ceremony here is deliberately short. Because the interior is around −5 °C, ceremonies usually last 20–30 minutes. The reception happens somewhere warm nearby: a restaurant, a log cabin or a heated space. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and we plan the day as one story, from the chapel to the dinner.

This is not a place for a long programme, a large sit-down in the cold or a dance floor. It is the place for a moment you will describe for the rest of your life. If you want a longer, larger celebration, plan the ceremony in the chapel and the party elsewhere. Our complete guide to eloping in Lapland shows how couples build that shape.

When the Chapel Is Open, and Which Month to Choose

Ice hotels near Rovaniemi open roughly December to March. Each part of the winter has its own character.

MonthWhat it is likeGood to know
DecemberPolar-night mood, Christmas seasonBusiest weeks around Christmas and New Year; book early
January–FebruaryMost stable ice, best aurora chances, deep snowColdest; book 8–12 months ahead
MarchLonger days, softer light, bright snowOften the best balance of daylight and comfort

Our honest tip: if your guests are older, choose March or early December, when the cold is milder. If you want the most dramatic pictures, January and February give the best snow and aurora chances. For the Christmas weeks, see our Christmas wedding guide.

A Day in the Life: The Timeline

Daylight decides everything in winter, so we build the day backwards from the light. A typical shape:

  1. Morning. Getting ready in your hotel or cabin. Hair, make-up and dressing take longer in winter because of the layers; we plan for it.
  2. Late morning to early afternoon. Couple portraits in daylight, in the snow near the SnowHotel, with the photographer.
  3. Afternoon. Transport to the chapel, arrival of guests, warm drinks, the ceremony of about 20–30 minutes.
  4. After the ceremony. Toast, group photographs, then a transfer to the warm reception space.
  5. Evening. Dinner, speeches, and, if the sky allows, a short northern lights break outside.

We recommend booking the photographer for the full day. The photography packages for Lapland weddings typically cost €2,000–€6,000 depending on hours and extras; see our Lapland Wedding Photographer page for details.

Cold, Clothes and Comfort for You and Your Guests

The chapel is around −5 °C inside and the outdoors can be below −20 °C, so clothes matter.

  • The couple. Long sleeves in velvet, brocade or lined satin, with thermal underlayers. A faux-fur wrap or cape works well, and warm boots under a long dress are fine; nobody sees them under the hem.
  • The guests. Winter boots, warm layers, a hat. We provide blankets and warm drinks as part of the styling.
  • Hands and flowers. A bouquet of artificial and preserved flowers survives the cold; fresh flowers do not.
  • The reception. Warm, so bring a nicer layer to change into.

Guests should be told in advance to dress for a short time outside. Our Lapland in December guide is a good link to send them.

The Legal Side for Foreign Couples

This part is simpler than most couples expect. Finland allows foreign nationals to marry, both partners can be foreign, and there is no residency requirement or waiting period.

  • Apply for an examination of impediments to marriage through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. It typically takes about seven working days, longer for international applicants, and costs around €60.
  • You will need valid passports and a certificate of no impediment from your home country; some cases need a birth certificate or a divorce decree.
  • Documents must be translated into Finnish, Swedish or English by a certified translator, and some countries require an apostille.
  • A civil ceremony is performed by a district court judge or other authorised official at virtually any location, and can be in English.

Start gathering documents three to four months before the date. Many couples complete the legal wedding at home and have a symbolic ceremony in Lapland instead; we explain the choice on Getting Married in Finland, and our guide to getting married in Finland as a foreigner goes through every step. We are not lawyers; check current rules with the authorities.

What It Costs, Honestly

We do not state a fixed wedding package price here, because each day is made to measure and quoted after a consultation. The general cost ranges we publish are a good starting point: an intimate elopement from about €5,000, €10,000–€20,000 for a styled event with 20–50 guests, and €30,000 or more for a larger celebration.

The ranges that matter for an ice chapel day are these. A cabin or glass igloo for an intimate day is typically €500–€1,500, and a hotel or resort event space €2,000–€8,000. Full styling packages range from €1,500 to €5,000, with elopement styling from around €800. A full-day photographer is €1,500–€4,000, and a sit-down dinner for 20–50 guests is €50–€150 per person. Return flights from European cities are €150–€500 per person, and glass igloos or resort suites €300–€800 a night. Details are on our Lapland Wedding Cost page. We recommend a contingency of about 10%.

Styling the Chapel Without Fighting the Ice

The chapel is already a work of art, so styling is about adding light and softness, not competing. Clusters of candles along the aisle and altar, winter roses, eucalyptus, dried and preserved greenery, faux furs and wool blankets on the ice seating. The palette stays white, silver, soft green and warm metallics. High-quality artificial and preserved flowers are used because fresh ones freeze; all arrangements are made by hand in our Rovaniemi studio. If you are building something custom, we create concept, mood boards and installations to measure, and our Winter Wedding in Lapland page shows the style.

How to Plan It With Us

Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and weddings follow five steps. Tell us about your day: date, guest count, wishes. A consultation, in person or online, with a price estimate. An agreement and a deposit that secures your date. Planning together: suppliers sourced and booked, options presented, you choose and we handle every booking and email. And your wedding day: the team installs every detail, runs the timeline and quietly solves the small things. We work for any size, from two guests to over 200. Start on the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page, read the Weddings overview, or look at Elopement in Lapland for the smallest version. Proposals are on Proposals in Lapland.
