A Husky Wedding in Lapland: Arriving by Sled, Marrying in the Snow and What to Plan

A husky wedding means you arrive at your ceremony on a sled, wrapped in reindeer hides, through snowy forest. We plan weddings in Rovaniemi, so here is how it works, when to come, what it costs to think about, what is legal and what to wear.

Short answer

A husky wedding in Lapland opens with a sled ride through snow-laden forest, usually from a husky farm with a professional musher, and you marry at the end of it. The season runs from late November to early April, with December to March the peak, and you should book at least 6 to 9 months ahead. Couples usually ride together on one sled wrapped in reindeer hides. Ceremonies can take place at the farm, in a forest clearing, at a glass igloo resort or in a wooden chapel, with a reception in a heated lavvu tent or around a fire. Our Husky Wedding in Lapland page has the details, Winter Wedding in Lapland covers the season, and Lapland Wedding Cost shows what a day like this can come to. Expect −5 to −20 °C, which the farm handles with insulated overalls and boots.

What a Husky Wedding Actually Is

It is simpler than it sounds. A husky wedding is a wedding in which the arrival is the highlight: instead of a car, the two of you glide through the forest on a sled pulled by huskies, steered by a professional musher, and the ceremony begins where the ride ends. Rides last from 20 minutes to well over an hour, depending on how far the ceremony spot is and how much of the forest you want to see.

Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, run by us, Joona and Alla, and Alla founded it after planning her own wedding in 2024. So when we describe the day, we are describing something we organise: the farm, the timing, the styling, the guests and the legal side. A husky wedding is not a package you buy off a shelf. It is a winter wedding with a very good entrance.

When to Come: The Husky Season

Husky sled rides run from late November to early April, and December to March is the peak. Some farms also offer wheeled husky carts from late spring to autumn, so a summer version exists, though it is not the snowy picture most couples have in mind.

Winter temperatures are −5 to −20 °C. The best light for photographs falls between 10:00 and 14:00, and in December and January the polar-night blue hour gives a deep, soft colour that photographers love. Plan the ceremony for the middle of the day and keep the reception for later. March is often a sweet spot, with snow but without the hardest cold, and the days are noticeably longer. For a winter date, book at least 6 to 9 months ahead. February and March fill first, and December is busy with Christmas visitors, so tell us your dates early. If you are choosing between Christmas and a quieter month, our guide to the Lapland Christmas season explains what changes.

The Sled Ride and the Ceremony

Couples usually ride together on one sled, wrapped in reindeer hides, and more sleds can be arranged for guests. The musher drives, you sit back and hold each other, and the dogs do the rest.

Where you marry is flexible. Places a husky wedding can end up include:

  • The husky farm itself, which gives you a ready-made winter backdrop and the dogs close by.
  • A forest clearing reached by sled, the most private option.
  • A glass igloo resort, where guests can stay overnight. See Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos for the glass igloos and the Ice Chapel.
  • A wooden chapel, for couples who want something more traditional at the end of the ride.

Receptions can take place in a heated lavvu tent or around an open fire. Keep the outdoor part short: ceremonies outdoors in winter work best at 15 to 20 minutes, with a warm space close by, fire pits, blankets and hot drinks.

A Sketch of the Day

Every wedding is different, but a day with a sled arrival often looks like this:

TimeWhat happens
MorningHair, make-up and dressing indoors. Farm staff fit your insulated overalls and boots over your outfit.
About 10:00–11:00Guests arrive by transfer and are shown to a warm spot near the ceremony site.
About 11:30–12:30Sled ride to the ceremony: you travel on one sled in reindeer hides, guests wait or follow on their own sleds.
Around middayCeremony of 15 to 20 minutes, with the best natural light between 10:00 and 14:00.
Early afternoonCouple photographs in the snow, then warm drinks by the fire.
Afternoon or eveningReception in a heated lavvu or around an open fire; dinner at a venue or resort.

This is only a sketch. We build the real timeline with the farm and your photographer, because the sun, the farm schedule and the number of guests all move it.

Legal Wedding or Symbolic Ceremony?

Finland allows foreign nationals to marry, with no residency requirement or waiting period. A civil ceremony is performed by a district court judge or another authorised official, almost anywhere, including a husky farm, and it can be held in English. See Getting Married in Finland for the full picture.

The paperwork is the part to start early. You apply for an examination of impediments through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, which usually takes about seven working days and can take several weeks for international applicants; the fee is around €60. You will need a valid passport each and a certificate of no impediment from your home country, plus any divorce or death certificate of a former spouse, all translated into Finnish, Swedish or English, and in some countries with an apostille. Begin three to four months before the wedding.

If that sounds like too much, many couples do it the other way: they complete the legal formalities at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Lapland. The sled, the snow and the vows feel the same. Which you choose is up to you, and we can plan either.

What to Think About Cost

We do not publish a fixed husky wedding price, because the farm, the number of sleds, the guest list and the styling all change the figure, and we would rather quote you the real thing. For orientation, the numbers we give couples in general are: an intimate elopement from around €5,000, up to €30,000 or more for a larger celebration, and €10,000 to €20,000 for a well-styled event of 20 to 50 guests.

Some building blocks: a cabin or glass igloo venue for an intimate day is €500 to €1,500, a hotel or resort event space €2,000 to €8,000, full styling €1,500 to €5,000, and full-day photography €1,500 to €4,000. Catering for a sit-down dinner runs €50 to €150 per person. Allow a contingency fund of around 10%. Read Lapland Wedding Cost for the whole breakdown, and ask for a quote that includes the sleds, so that you see the whole day in one number. Each quote comes with a detailed breakdown and no hidden fees.

Styling, Guests and What to Wear

Styling suits the setting. Our usual ideas are greenery garlands on a wooden arch, lanterns in the snow, winter roses, eucalyptus and frosted pine, reindeer hides on benches and a fur-trimmed aisle runner. We use high-quality artificial flowers and curated décor that hold up in the cold, which fresh petals do not.

For the couple, the farm provides insulated overalls and boots for the ride, so you do not need to buy anything for the sled itself; wear warm base layers, and keep the dress or suit for the ceremony. For guests, think thermal layers, a warm coat, hat, gloves and proper boots; the rides are short but the waiting is not. Our guide to what to wear in Lapland in winter covers the layering in detail. Guests are welcome at any size, from two to 200 or more, and activities such as husky sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer sleigh rides and a sauna keep them happy between ceremony and dinner.

If you like the idea of animals but prefer a gentler pace, a Reindeer Wedding in Lapland arrives by reindeer sleigh instead, with rides of 15 to 30 minutes.

FAQ

When is the husky wedding season in Lapland?

Sled rides run from late November to early April, with December to March as the peak. Some farms offer wheeled husky carts from late spring to autumn. For a winter date, book at least 6 to 9 months ahead.

How do we travel on the sled?

Couples usually ride together on one sled, wrapped in reindeer hides, with a professional musher driving. Rides last from 20 minutes to over an hour, and more sleds can be arranged for guests.

How cold will it be, and what do we wear?

Expect −5 to −20 °C. The farm provides insulated overalls and boots for the ride, and you add warm base layers. Guests should bring thermal layers, hats, gloves and proper boots.

Can we have a legal wedding at a husky farm?

Yes. A civil ceremony can be held outdoors at a husky farm with a licensed officiant. You need a valid passport, a certificate of no impediment and an examination of impediments through the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, which costs around €60.

Can we have a symbolic ceremony instead?

Yes. Many couples complete the legal paperwork at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Lapland, with the same sled, setting and vows.

When is the best light for photos?

Between 10:00 and 14:00 in winter. In December and January the polar-night blue hour also gives a beautiful soft light, so plan the ceremony around midday.

Our Honest Final Word

A husky wedding is a lovely way to start a marriage in Lapland, but it asks for some planning: a winter date, a farm booked early, warm layers and a short outdoor ceremony. The reward is an entrance you will never forget and photographs with real snow in them. If you want it with fewer moving parts, a symbolic ceremony or a smaller group keeps it simple.

Yes, this is our own business, so we are not neutral, but we would rather give you honest advice than a hard sell. Start with Husky Wedding in Lapland, look at Winter Wedding in Lapland for the season, and tell us your dates through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings. We will reply within one business day.
