Getting to Casa Cayuco: flights, boat and overland

Most guests fly from Panama City’s Albrook Airport (PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) with Air Panama, about 50 minutes. The lodge recommends Flight 980 in (landing around 2:00 pm) and Flight 981 out (leaving around 2:30 pm), because they match its one scheduled boat a day. The captain meets you at the airport at 2:00 pm with a sign, and the boat leaves the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm for the 30–35 minute ride through the mangrove islands. The return boat leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm. Both are included. Other times mean a paid private transfer, and early pick-ups are not available.

Cheaper overland options exist: an overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante (leaves 8 pm, arrives 6 am) plus a 30-minute water taxi, or a bus transfer from Boquete via Almirante, about four hours including the water taxi. From Costa Rica you can fly Sansa from San José or take the Caribe Shuttle.

How many nights to stay

Casa Cayuco has a three-night minimum, with check-in at 3:00 pm and check-out at 12:30 pm. Because the daily boat arrives mid-afternoon and leaves around midday, a three-night stay gives you just two full days. We would suggest four or five nights if you can: the first evening is for settling in, the Salt Creek tour and a snorkel fill a day, a half-day excursion such as Isla Zapatillas fills another, and you still have a lazy beach day. Groups of 20 or more can ask the lodge for discounted per-person rates, and groups of 30 or more can reserve the whole lodge.

A short packing list for an open-air jungle lodge

Adventures from your doorstep: what to do while you stay

Not included: drinks, guided excursions, gratuities (recommended 12–15%), the 10% hotel tax on room charges and the 7% tax on excursions and drinks. The food: plant-forward, local and shared

The cuisine is predominantly plant-based, with fresh fish caught by local fishermen on hand lines and brought to the dock by cayuco every evening. Coconut milk, nut butters and juices are made in-house, coffee comes from the Boquete highlands and the chocolate from Green Acres Chocolate Farm in Dolphin Bay. Meals are at communal tables, with a long dinner table on the dock; the afternoon snack comes to wherever you are. Allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, so tell the lodge ahead of time. Kid-friendly options are available on request.

Who this is not for (so you can stop reading now)

We would rather you book the right place than our place. Casa Cayuco is probably not for you if you are travelling with a child under 5 (the lodge does not accept guests under 5 because of the remote location), if you can only stay one or two nights (the minimum is three), if you need air conditioning everywhere (only the Estrella De Mar villa has it) or if you want nightlife (Bocas Town is a 30-minute boat ride away and the daily boat runs on a schedule). Geckos, bats, frogs and a few spiders live in the jungle too; the nets are tightly woven and natural repellent helps at dusk and dawn.
