Panama in 7 Days: Panama City Plus a Bocas del Toro Eco Lodge

One week is enough to see Panama City’s old town and spend four nights on a rainforest island in the Caribbean. This is a realistic itinerary built around the flights and boat times Casa Cayuco publishes, with honest notes on what to skip.

Seven days is the most common holiday length, and Panama fits it surprisingly well: a country where you can have a city morning and a jungle island by afternoon. The catch is logistics. Casa Cayuco’s scheduled boat leaves Bocas Town once a day, the recommended flights are tied to it, and the lodge has a three-night minimum. We have built the week around those facts, using the lodge’s own getting-there page, and we mark clearly where we are guessing. For a longer trip, see our 10-day Panama itinerary.

Short answer

A 7-day Panama itinerary that works: two nights in Panama City (Casco Viejo), fly to Bocas del Toro, then four nights at Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos. Take Air Panama flight 980 to arrive about 2 pm and the lodge’s 3 pm boat, and fly back on flight 981 after the 12:30 pm boat. The shape of the week

Day 1 — arrive in Panama City. Days 2–3 — Panama City and Casco Viejo. Day 3 afternoon — fly to Bocas del Toro and take the boat to the lodge. Days 4–6 — Casa Cayuco. Day 7 — morning boat to Bocas Town, flight to Panama City, onward travel. That gives four nights at the lodge if you arrive on day 3, which sits comfortably above the three-night minimum.

If your international flight leaves from Tocumen late on day 7, build in margin: the lodge’s return boat leaves around 12:30 pm and the recommended Air Panama flight leaves Bocas around 2:30 pm. Many travellers add a final night in Panama City instead.

Days 1–2: Panama City and Casco Viejo

Casa Cayuco recommends the American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo and says its guests get special rates there if they mention the lodge; that is the only other hotel we name. Casco Viejo is Panama City’s old town, with colonial streets and restaurants. For a driver or guide, the lodge suggests Hobby Pro Tours, an English-speaking company, and Uber works in the city too. We have not used either, so check recent reviews and prices.

Do not over-schedule. Between jet lag and a morning flight on day 3, two nights is enough for the old town, the Panama Canal viewpoint if you wish, and a long dinner.

Day 3: fly to Bocas and take the boat

Most guests fly from Albrook Airport (PAC) in Panama City to Bocas del Toro (BOC), about 50 minutes, with Air Panama. The lodge recommends Flight 980, arriving around 2:00 pm, because it matches the included scheduled boat: the captain meets you with a sign at the airport at 2:00 pm, with the boat leaving Bocas Town at 3:00 pm for the 30–35 minute ride through the mangroves of the Bastimentos National Marine Park. Fly Trip also flies daily, with times varying by weekday. Other times mean a private transfer for a fee, and early pick-ups are not available.

Days 3–6: four nights at Casa Cayuco

Arrive at around 3:30 pm to a calm beach and the dock. Included are all meals, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear, yoga mats and the Salt Creek village tour. Plan excursions at check-in: a half-day to the Zapatillas islands ($80), the Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70), mangrove snorkelling ($85), Sloth Creek ($40) and a jungle trail ($25 for the Sendero). Prices are per person as listed by the lodge in November 2026. Keep one day free to do nothing on the beach.

Day 7: back to Panama City

The scheduled boat leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm and you reach Bocas Town in time for Air Panama Flight 981, which leaves at about 2:30 pm. The lodge arranges luggage storage at the bookkeeper’s office in Bocas Town (the yellow and turquoise house between the Policía Nacional and Brothers Restaurant), a 10-minute walk or a $2-per-person taxi from the airport. Allow time for check-in. If you need to catch an evening international flight, consider staying a night in Panama City.

Cheaper but slower: the overland route

An overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante leaves at 8 pm and arrives at 6 am, followed by a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. It saves money but eats a day, so it does not fit a 7-day itinerary unless you want a very slow trip. From Boquete there is a bus transfer of about four hours including the water taxi.

What this itinerary leaves out

This week skips Boquete and the highlands, the Guna Yala islands, the Pacific beaches and the Pearl Islands. That is deliberate: with only a week, two stops are better than four. If you want the highlands as well, you need ten days. You also skip nightlife in Bocas Town, since the lodge is 30–35 minutes by boat and the boat runs on a schedule.

What is the minimum stay at Casa Cayuco?

Three nights.

Our Honest Final Word

A week in Panama works best when you do less: a city, a flight, a lodge. Four nights at Casa Cayuco is the right dose of rainforest and sea for first-time visitors. The itinerary will not suit anyone who wants nightlife or a different hotel every night. Find more in our Panama stays guide.
