Room rates at Casa Cayuco are not published, so we cannot tell you what a stay costs; the lodge’s live booking page does that. What we can do is explain every extra the lodge lists, so the total on the screen holds no surprises. The percentages below come from the lodge’s own terms. The sums are illustrations we made up, not quotes.

Short answer

In Panama hotels you should expect a hotel tax on room charges, a tip on top and a US-dollar economy. At Casa Cayuco, meals and the boat transfer are included; extras are a 10% hotel tax on room charges, a 7% tax on excursions and drinks, drinks and excursions themselves, and gratuities that the lodge recommends at 12–15% of the stay. What is included before extras

The lodge’s stay price covers more than most hotel rates:

  • Round-trip scheduled speedboat transfer from Bocas Town
  • All meals: chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack
  • Local coffee and tea every morning
  • The Salt Creek village tour, including the boat through the mangrove channel
  • Use of sea kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats
  • 24/7 on-site staff and daily housekeeping

Our all-inclusive Panama guide explains why it feels like an all-inclusive, though drinks are separate.

The 10% hotel tax on room charges

According to the lodge, a 10% Panamanian hotel tax applies to room charges. A simple illustration: if your room charges came to $1,000 (a made-up figure), the tax would be $100. Check the final total on the booking page, because it is the lodge’s system, not ours, that sets what is shown.

Staff gratuities: 12–15% of the stay

The lodge recommends gratuities of 12–15% of the stay for staff, who are mostly from the neighbouring village of Salt Creek. In our made-up $1,000 example, that would be $120 to $150. The lodge lists gratuities as not included, so budget for them rather than treating them as optional extras. Tipping at payment time is easiest in cash or as your lodge arranges at check-out. Ask staff how they prefer to receive it.

Drinks and the 7% tax on excursions and beverages

Beverages are not included. The lodge has a full bar with well and premium liquors, organic, biodynamic and natural wines from Argentina and Chile, and Panamanian beers; outside alcohol is not allowed. A 7% tax applies to excursions and beverages. Illustration: two guests on the $80 Isla Zapatillas trip pay $160, and a 7% tax would add $11.20. We do not know whether listed excursion prices already include tax, so assume it is extra and confirm at check-in.

Excursion prices to plan around

Guided excursions are planned at check-in and billed per person. The lodge’s prices in November 2026:

ExcursionLengthPer person
Isla ZapatillasHalf day$80
Mangrove SnorkelingHalf day$85
Botanical Chocolate Farm TourHalf day$70
Bat Cave TourHalf day$95
Monkey Island2 hours$70
Sloth Creek1 hour$40
SurfingHalf day$75
Nidori BeachFull day$135

The Salt Creek village tour is included. Prices may change, so treat them as a planning guide.

Cash and the US dollar

Panama uses US paper money, and the Panamanian balboa is pegged to the dollar. The lodge accepts cash, bank transfer or credit card on site. It also suggests bringing some cash for crafts in the village and chocolate at the chocolate farm. In Bocas Town, taxis from the airport cost about $2 per person and the water taxi to Bibi’s on the Beach about $1 per person, so small bills help.

A full worked example

Here is a made-up family of four on a four-night stay, only to show how the layers stack up. Suppose room charges are $2,000. Add the 10% hotel tax ($200), a 12% tip ($240), two excursions at $70 per person for four people ($560) plus 7% on that ($39.20) and a few drinks. That gives about $3,039 before drinks. Your own total will differ, because the real room rate comes from the live booking page and changes by date and room. See our Casa Cayuco prices explained post.

Deposit, payment and cancellation

A 50% deposit confirms your booking, by card or bank transfer. Cancel more than 60 days before check-in and the deposit is refunded minus a $100 admin fee; 45–60 days forfeits half the deposit; inside 45 days all of it. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.
