Parents and first-time island travellers ask us about the boat before anything else: how long, how rough, what happens to the luggage, what if the flight is late. The timings below come from Casa Cayuco’s own travel pages, which we have read closely; we have not made this crossing ourselves yet, so we do not describe how it feels beyond what the lodge says.

Short answer

The boat ride to Casa Cayuco is a scheduled speedboat transfer of about 30–35 minutes from Bocas Town through the protected mangrove islands of the Bastimentos National Marine Park, included in your stay as a round trip. The recommended plan is to fly Air Panama flight 980 into Bocas (landing around 2:00 pm) to meet the 2:00 pm pickup. How the transfer works at a glance

The lodge runs one scheduled boat transfer a day, round trip, included in your stay. The captain meets guests at Bocas del Toro airport with a sign for the recommended flights, and the boat leaves from the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town. The ride is roughly 30–35 minutes, winding through mangrove islands inside the marine park. On your return, the boat leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm, which is also the check-out time.

Other flight times are possible, but they need a private transfer for a fee, and early pickups are not available. Our Air Panama flights guide explains the flights in detail.

What the ride passes through

The crossing takes you through the mangrove islands of the Bastimentos National Marine Park, which is part of why the trip is more than a transfer. You pass small mangrove islets in turquoise water, with rainforest meeting the sea on Isla Bastimentos. Dolphins are sometimes seen in the archipelago, though no one can promise a sighting. The boat ends at the lodge’s dock on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Bastimentos.

If you plan to take photos, keep your phone or camera in a dry bag in case of spray, and bring a hat and sunscreen for the open-air boat. We cover packing for the trip in our packing list.

Luggage and what to wear on the boat

Pack in soft bags where you can, because they stow more easily in a small boat than hard cases do. Put anything that must stay dry (passports, electronics, medication) in a dry bag or a zip-seal bag. Wear sandals or shoes that can get wet, and bring a light rain jacket, since showers can pass through the archipelago. Casa Cayuco is open-air with Type A 110 V (US) sockets and solar electricity 24/7, so you can charge devices once you arrive, but guests are asked not to use hair dryers.

If you are going out for the day from Bocas Town before the boat, the lodge’s pages say luggage can be stored at the bookkeeper’s office in Bocas Town (the yellow and turquoise house between the Policía Nacional and Brothers Restaurant), ten minutes’ walk from the airport or a $2-per-person taxi.

Seasickness, kids and comfort

A 30–35 minute speedboat ride is short but can feel long if you are prone to seasickness. The mangrove channels are generally more sheltered than open water, but conditions change, and the Caribbean swell season runs November to April, according to the lodge. If you or your children get queasy, talk to your doctor about motion-sickness options before you travel, eat lightly beforehand, sit near the middle of the boat and watch the horizon. We are not medical professionals and cannot recommend specific medication.

Children must be at least five to stay at the lodge, so there are no babies on board for the transfer. Make sure each child has a hat, sunscreen and a snack, and tell the captain if anyone is nervous. Our guide to family safety in Bocas del Toro covers more.

If your flight is late, or you arrive another way

Flights can run late, and the lodge will want to know. Fill in the pre-arrival form the lodge sends and share your flight details; if you miss the scheduled boat, a private transfer can be arranged for a fee, according to the lodge. You can also reach Bocas by overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante (leaving at 8 pm, arriving about 6 am), followed by a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. From Boquete, a bus transfer via Almirante takes about four hours including the water taxi. From Costa Rica, you can fly with Sansa from San José or take the Caribe Shuttle overland.

If you have time before the 3:00 pm boat, the lodge suggests spending it at Bibi’s on the Beach ($1 per person by water taxi) or La Buga on the water. See our full getting-there guide and the Costa Rica routes guide.

Is the boat transfer worth the effort?

We think so. The transfer is the price of an island lodge that has its own calm swimmable beach and no road. It is included, reliable once you match the recommended flights and it begins the holiday with mangroves, sea breeze and open sky. If you hate boats completely, a lodge like this is probably not for you, and the Bocas Town hotels will be easier. But for most travellers, the boat ride is a highlight.

Remember the practical limits: one scheduled boat a day, check-in at 3:00 pm and check-out at 12:30 pm, and a three-night minimum. If you want to compare, read our Bocas Town vs Isla Bastimentos guide.

Your arrival day, step by step

To make the day feel less mysterious, here is how it should run if you follow the lodge’s recommended flights. First, you land at Bocas del Toro airport around 2:00 pm and walk out to find the captain with a sign. Second, you travel by the boat that leaves from the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, which is a short walk from the airport or a $2-per-person taxi, with your luggage in tow. Third, about 30–35 minutes later you arrive at the lodge’s dock, where check-in begins at 3:00 pm. Settle in, swim off the beach, and meet the guides to plan the coming days.

The lodge sends a pre-arrival form before your stay, so you can share your flight numbers, your group’s ages and any dietary needs, and it helps the lodge plan the boat and the kitchen. Keep a printed or offline copy of your booking confirmation, because mobile data can be patchy on the water, and bring some US cash for the village and the chocolate farm.

Finally, keep your first afternoon free. Many guests have been up early to fly from Panama City, and the best first activity is a swim and an early dinner. Everything else, from snorkelling to the village visit, can wait for tomorrow.
