Combining both

You pass through town on arrival day; the lodge suggests waiting at Bibi’s on the Beach or La Buga. A night in town before or after is possible.

How to reach Casa Cayuco from Panama City and beyond

The simplest route is by air: Panama City (Albrook) to Bocas del Toro takes about 50 minutes with Air Panama, and Fly Trip also flies daily. Casa Cayuco’s single daily boat is timed for Air Panama flights 980 and 981, so those are the ones we would try to book. After you land, a captain holds a sign at the airport at 2:00 pm and takes you to Bocas Town; the lodge’s boat leaves the dock at 3:00 pm and arrives about 30–35 minutes later. The lodge sends a pre-arrival form to confirm details.

If you arrive early, the lodge suggests waiting at Bibi’s on the Beach or La Buga on the water, and you can leave luggage at the bookkeeper’s office near the Policía Nacional. Coming from Boquete, a bus transfer via Almirante takes about four hours, and an overnight bus runs from Panama City to Almirante.

How many nights to stay

Casa Cayuco has a three-night minimum, with check-in at 3:00 pm and check-out at 12:30 pm. Because the daily boat arrives mid-afternoon and leaves around midday, a three-night stay gives you just two full days. We would suggest four or five nights if you can: the first evening is for settling in, the Salt Creek tour and a snorkel fill a day, a half-day excursion such as Isla Zapatillas fills another, and you still have a lazy beach day. Groups of 20 or more can ask the lodge for discounted per-person rates, and groups of 30 or more can reserve the whole lodge.

What to pack

Keep it light and tropical. The lodge suggests reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a flashlight or headlamp, trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket. Remember that outlets are US-style 110 V, hair dryers are not welcome, and Panama uses US dollars, so bring some cash for the crafts in Salt Creek and chocolate at the chocolate farm. You do not need to bring snorkel gear, kayaks or paddle boards, as these are provided. If you would like to help the village, ask about Pack for a Purpose and bring school or medical supplies.

Adventures from your doorstep: what to do while you stay

Casa Cayuco plans excursions at check-in with its in-house guides, so nothing has to be booked ahead. As listed on the lodge’s site in November 2026 (per person, prices may change): Isla Zapatillas half day $80, mangrove snorkelling $85, Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour $70, Bat Cave Tour $95, Monkey Island $70, Sloth Creek $40, Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop $25, and Nidori Beach full day $135 (three-person minimum). The Salt Creek village tour is included, and kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are free to use from the beach.

The food: plant-forward, local and shared

The cuisine is predominantly plant-based, with fresh fish caught by local fishermen on hand lines and brought to the dock by cayuco every evening. Coconut milk, nut butters and juices are made in-house, coffee comes from the Boquete highlands and the chocolate from Green Acres Chocolate Farm in Dolphin Bay. Meals are at communal tables, with a long dinner table on the dock; the afternoon snack comes to wherever you are. Allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, so tell the lodge ahead of time. Kid-friendly options are available on request.

Is it right for you? The honest limits

No lodge suits everybody. The rules at Casa Cayuco are simple: guests must be 5 or older, stays start at three nights, and only the villa is air-conditioned. The location is remote, 30 minutes by boat from Bocas Town, with one scheduled boat each day. If you are fine with open-air rooms, a fan and a mosquito net, you will probably be fine with everything else.
