Panama 14 Day Itinerary: City, Boquete and Bocas del Toro
Two weeks is enough to see Panama City, the cool highlands around Boquete and the Caribbean islands without rushing. Here is the day-by-day plan we would follow, with five nights at Casa Cayuco as the finale, and the transfer details that make it work.

This guide is built from our own family travels and from Casa Cayuco’s own pages and booking terms — what is included, how to get there and what each room is like come straight from the lodge, never invented.
The best Panama 14 day itinerary we would plan is three nights in Panama City and Casco Viejo, four in the Boquete highlands, five at Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama in Bocas del Toro, then a last night in the capital before flying home. The route works because the lodge’s daily boat matches the recommended flights, and the Boquete to Bocas bus transfer takes about 4 hours including the water taxi. Book the lodge through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

The big picture: why this order works
Panama is a narrow country, so a two-week trip is really about choosing three contrasting bases and linking them sensibly. We like to start in the city while jet lag fades, move to the cooler highlands for walking and coffee country, and finish on the Caribbean coast where you can do almost nothing at all. Ending at the beach also means your last nights are the most relaxed ones.

The shape of this plan is 13 nights: 3 in Panama City, 4 in Boquete, 5 at the lodge and 1 back in Panama City before an international flight. If you only have 7 or 10 days, our shorter plans are here: the 7-day city and Bocas plan and the 10-day city, highlands and Bocas plan. This 14-day version simply gives each stop room to breathe.
Days 1 to 3: Panama City and Casco Viejo
Spend your first three nights in the capital. Casco Viejo, the old quarter, is the natural base for walking, eating and getting your bearings. Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo (mention Casa Cayuco when you book), which is the one city hotel we are happy to point you to. The lodge also suggests an English-speaking driver for tours, Hobby Pro Tours, and Uber works in the city too.
A sensible rhythm is a slow first day, an old-town wander on day two, and a third day for whatever interests your family most, whether that is the Panama Canal, a museum or simply cafés and plazas. We keep this part high level on purpose: opening hours and entry fees change, so check them close to your dates.
Day 4: travel to Boquete
Boquete is Panama’s cool highland town, a very different climate from the coast. The route from the capital is a long travel day by road, or by a domestic flight plus a transfer, so treat day 4 as a travel day and check current schedules before you book anything. Because the lodge’s own page covers the return leg from Boquete rather than the way in, we would not try to quote times for this stretch.
Days 4 to 7: Boquete and the highlands
Four nights in the highlands give you time for walks, coffee country and the kind of cool evenings you will miss once you reach the coast. Casa Cayuco’s own kitchen actually uses organic greens from Kakao Culture Organics and Finca Panda coffee, both from the Boquete area, so you may taste the region at the lodge before or after you visit it.
We would keep plans loose here: one active day, one slow day, and one flexible day for weather. For a closer comparison of the two regions, read Bocas del Toro vs Boquete. Pack a layer, because evenings can feel cool after the tropical heat of the city.
Day 8: Boquete to Bocas and the lodge boat
This is the day that needs care. A bus transfer from Boquete (the lodge names Hello Travel Panama) runs via Almirante and takes about 4 hours including the water taxi to Bocas Town. Casa Cayuco’s single daily scheduled boat leaves from the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, and the pickup point in town is the bookkeeper’s office, a 10-minute walk from the airport or a $2 per person taxi, where luggage can be stored.

Check the transfer’s departure time against the 3:00 pm boat before you commit. If the timing does not fit, add a night in Bocas Town rather than arriving rushed; early pick-ups are not available, and other times are private transfers for a fee. While you wait, the lodge suggests Bibi’s on the Beach (a $1 per person water taxi) or La Buga on the water. Our full route notes are in how to get to Bocas del Toro and Casa Cayuco.

Days 8 to 13: five nights at Casa Cayuco
Five nights is our favourite length for the lodge (the minimum is 3). The lodge sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, with a calm swimmable beach, a jungle trail starting at the door and the Zapatillas Islands 10 minutes away by boat. Meals, the boat from Bocas Town, kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and the Salt Creek village tour are all included.

Excursions are extra and planned with the in-house guides at check-in, so you do not need to book ahead. A balanced five days might be: a beach and kayak day, the Zapatillas half day ($80), the Salt Creek tour (included), a Monkey Island or Sloth Creek morning ($70 and $40) and a rest day. For a group of up to 8, the Estrella De Mar Tropical Beachfront Villa4% off · HungryTravelPanama has three en-suite bedrooms and is the only air-conditioned unit at the lodge; couples and smaller families have other options in our room guide.
Days 13 and 14: back to the city and home
The boat back leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm, and the recommended Air Panama Flight 981 leaves Bocas at about 2:30 pm for the roughly 50-minute flight to Albrook. Spending the last night in Panama City avoids cutting it fine with an international departure. Flights are daily, but confirm times close to travel, as Fly Trip schedules vary by weekday.
When to travel and what to pack for three climates
Bocas del Toro is warm all year, around 27 °C (82 °F) on average, and Panama is outside the hurricane belt. According to the lodge, the generally drier months are February to April and August to October, while November to January and May to July are rainier. Rain at the coast usually falls at night and clears by late morning. The highlands are a separate climate, so check a forecast for Boquete rather than assuming it matches the coast.
Packing for a three-stop trip is the real challenge: city clothes, a warm layer for the highlands and beach gear for the islands. The lodge recommends reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a flashlight or headlamp, trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket. Our packing guide goes into more detail: what to pack for a Bocas del Toro eco lodge.
Why we would finish at the beach, not start there
Many itineraries start on the islands, but we prefer the reverse for a longer trip. The city and highlands are the busier legs, with more moving around, so you do them while your energy is high. The lodge is the opposite: open-air living, communal meals, a beach and a jungle trail, with no need to plan anything because activities are arranged at check-in. Five nights there feels like a proper rest before the flights home.

There is also a practical reason. The lodge has one scheduled boat a day, at 3:00 pm from Bocas Town in and around 12:30 pm out, so the beach leg is the one with fixed times. Putting it last means a delay earlier in the trip will not shorten your stay. Ask the lodge about other times, which are private transfers for a fee.

FAQ
Is 14 days too long for Panama?
No. Two weeks lets you see the capital, the highlands and the islands at a relaxed pace. If you are short on time, trim the highlands to two nights, but keep at least three nights at Casa Cayuco, which is its minimum stay, so the beach leg still feels like a real stay and not a stopover.
How do I get from Boquete to Bocas del Toro?
The lodge points to a bus transfer from Boquete, run by Hello Travel Panama, via Almirante. It takes about 4 hours including the water taxi to Bocas Town. Check the departure time against the lodge’s 3:00 pm boat and add a night in Bocas Town if the timing does not fit.
How many nights should we spend at Casa Cayuco?
We would book five, though the minimum is three. That leaves time for the Zapatillas trip, wildlife mornings, the included Salt Creek tour and genuinely empty beach days. See our nights guide for more on how long to stay in Bocas, and use a longer stay if you want several excursions.
Are children welcome on this itinerary?
The itinerary suits school-age children, but Casa Cayuco does not accept guests under 5 years old because of its remote location and safety considerations. Kid-friendly meal options are available on request. For families with older children we think the mix of city, cool highlands and beach works well.
What does the lodge stay include?
The round-trip scheduled boat from Bocas Town, the Salt Creek village tour, kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear, yoga mats, morning coffee and tea and all meals including an afternoon snack. Excursions, drinks, tips and taxes are extra: the lodge recommends tips of 12 to 15% of the stay, plus 10% hotel tax on room charges and 7% tax on excursions and drinks.
Can we fly instead of taking the bus from Boquete?
This itinerary uses the overland transfer because that is what the lodge describes. Flight options and schedules can change, so check current timetables before you decide, and remember the lodge boat leaves Bocas Town at 3:00 pm. Do not plan an early-morning arrival and expect an early boat.
Our Honest Final Word
This is the Panama 14 day itinerary we would plan for our own family: a city to start, the highlands for cooler air, then five nights at Casa Cayuco to slow right down. We have not stayed at the lodge yet, so we built this from its published facts and chose to partner with it because of its setting, its included meals and its focus on the local village of Salt Creek.
It is not for travellers who want nightlife (Bocas Town is 30+ minutes by boat), need air-conditioning in every room, or are bringing children under 5. Check live rates and make sure HungryTravelPanama is in the promo box for 4% off at Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama.
