Two very different Panamas
Boquete sits in Panama’s western highlands, known for cooler temperatures, coffee farms, mountain views and outdoor activities. Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on the Caribbean coast, close to the Costa Rican border, where life revolves around boats, beaches, mangroves and reef. Casa Cayuco reports an average temperature of about 27 °C (82 °F) in Bocas all year; in Boquete you would expect it to be noticeably cooler, which is a large part of the appeal for people who dislike heat.

Think of it as a choice between a sweater and a swimsuit. Everything else follows from that.
Side-by-side: what each place is best for
| Boquete (highlands) | Bocas del Toro (Caribbean) | |
|---|---|---|
| Climate | Cooler, mountain air | Warm all year, about 27 °C on average |
| Main draw | Coffee, hiking, scenery | Beaches, snorkelling, rainforest, sloths |
| Best with | Active adults, coffee lovers | Families with kids 5+, couples, snorkellers |
| Water | Rivers and mountains | Calm swimmable beach at Casa Cayuco, reef, mangroves |
| Getting around | Road transport | Boats between islands |
| Typical stay | Flexible | 3-night minimum at Casa Cayuco |
If you only have a week and want one stamp in your passport that says beach, Bocas wins. If your trip includes coffee and mountains, split it.
How to combine Boquete and Bocas
The lodge explains the Boquete link: a bus transfer with Hello Travel Panama via Almirante takes about four hours including the water taxi to Bocas Town. From Bocas Town you take Casa Cayuco’s scheduled boat, about 30–35 minutes, to Punta Vieja. For the first half, Panama City, the Casco Viejo old town and a stay at American Trade Hotel are what the lodge recommends, and Casa Cayuco guests get special rates there if they mention the lodge.

Our 10-day Panama itinerary builds exactly this route: city, highlands, then Bocas to unwind.
Why the beach half should be a lodge, not a town hotel
After a few days of hiking, you probably want the second leg of your trip to be effortless. A lodge with all meals, a boat transfer and activities planned for you does that better than a town hotel where you arrange every meal and tour. Casa Cayuco is about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town. Zapatillas is 10 minutes by boat and the Salt Creek village is 5 minutes by boat (30 minutes on foot). What coffee lovers will notice at Casa Cayuco
One nice connection: the coffee served at the lodge is Finca Panda from the Boquete highlands, and some organic greens come from Kakao Culture Organics, also in Boquete. So a stay in Bocas can echo the highlands trip you just finished, or give you a taste if you are skipping Boquete. Alongside that, local small-batch coffee and tea are served every morning and are included.

Our Honest Final Word
Boquete and Bocas del Toro are not rivals so much as opposite ends of a good Panama itinerary. If your time is short and you want one place, choose the one that matches your idea of rest: cool air and coffee, or warm sea and rainforest.
If you choose the Caribbean, do it properly: a lodge where food, boats and activities are handled, and nights are long enough to feel the place. That is why we partnered with Casa Cayuco.
