Panama Itinerary, 10 Days: City, Highlands and a Bocas Eco Lodge

Ten days is enough for Panama City’s old quarter, a taste of the cool highlands and four nights on the Caribbean coast. Here is a plan that ends where most people want to end up: at a remote beach lodge on Isla Bastimentos.

We design trips backwards from the place we most want to be, then add the rest. In Panama, for most travellers, that place is the Caribbean coast. We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco ourselves yet — we researched it in depth before partnering with it — so the lodge details below come from its own pages, while the wider Panama notes are general and hedged. Check opening hours, prices and transport details yourself before you go.

Short answer

A good 10-day Panama itinerary is three nights in Panama City, two or three in the highlands around Boquete, and four or five at a Bocas del Toro eco lodge. We would end at Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos, so the beach comes last. Use our link, keep HungryTravelPanama in the promo box, and you get 4% off. The shape of the trip

Panama is small but varied. A sensible 10-day split looks like this:

DaysWhereWhy
1–3Panama City (Casco Viejo)History, food, the canal region
4–6Boquete highlandsCool air, coffee country, hiking
7–10Bocas del Toro, Casa CayucoBeach, reef, jungle

If you have only a week, skip the highlands, and read our first-trip planning guide.

Days 1–3: Panama City

Casco Viejo, the old quarter, is the natural base for a first night or three. Casa Cayuco recommends American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo and says its guests get special rates there if they mention Casa Cayuco. The lodge also suggests Hobby Pro Tours, an English-speaking driver and tour provider, and says Uber works in Panama City. We have not used these ourselves, so treat them as the lodge’s recommendations.

Spend one day on the old town on foot, one on the canal area and one flexible day for rest or a day trip. Keep your last evening free before your early-ish flight.

Days 4–6: the Boquete highlands

Boquete is Panama’s cool highland town, known for coffee farms and hiking. Casa Cayuco sources its coffee from Finca Panda in the Boquete highlands and its organic greens from Kakao Culture Organics in Boquete, which gives a nice link between the two stops. Getting to Bocas from Boquete is straightforward: the lodge says a bus transfer with Hello Travel Panama runs via Almirante and takes about four hours including the water taxi. We would go overland, because it includes the boat ride into Bocas.

Check transport schedules before you travel, as they change.

Days 7–10: Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos

From Bocas Town you take the lodge’s included speedboat for about 30–35 minutes through the mangrove islands of the marine park. Check-in is at 3:00 pm, and the boat back leaves around 12:30 pm. Four nights give you two excursions and two lazy days. A typical plan:

Isla Zapatillas – white sand and palms, ten minutes from Casa Cayuco – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama

  • Day 7: arrive, swim, dinner on the dock.
  • Day 8: kayaks and the included Salt Creek tour.
  • Day 9: Isla Zapatillas with snorkelling (half day, $80).
  • Day 10: breakfast and the boat out around 12:30 pm.

Add a fifth night if you can: our nights guide shows why four or five nights suit best.

Flying instead of the bus

If you skip the highlands, fly. Air Panama flies Albrook (PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) in about 50 minutes. The lodge recommends Flight 980, arriving around 2:00 pm, to match the boat, and Flight 981 back, leaving around 2:30 pm. Fly Trip also flies daily, with times varying by weekday. From Costa Rica, Sansa flies San José to Bocas on certain days (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays), and the Caribe Shuttle goes overland. The overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante leaves at 8 pm and arrives at 6 am, followed by a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. Our getting-there guide has the full detail.

When to go

The lodge says the drier months are February to April and August to October, with the calmest sea in August to October. November to January and May to July are rainier. The average temperature is about 27 °C (82 °F). Highlands tend to be cooler, so pack a light jacket for Boquete. Our month-by-month guide helps you choose.

If you have 7 or 14 days instead

Seven days: two nights in Panama City and four at the lodge, flying between them. That keeps the beach time that most people travel for. Fourteen days: add more highlands days with hiking and coffee farms, a longer Bocas stay with more excursions, or a Costa Rica leg, since the lodge notes Sansa flights between San José and Bocas and a Caribe Shuttle overland. Our itinerary logic stays the same: city, then cool air, then sea.

One caution for any version: the lodge has one scheduled boat a day, and early pickups are not available, so build your flights around the 2:00 pm arrival and the 12:30 pm departure, and keep a buffer day before any long-haul flight home.

Money, tips and taxes across the trip

Panama uses US dollars, so you will not need to exchange currency if you carry US cash and cards. At Casa Cayuco, payment on site is by cash, bank transfer or credit card. A 50% deposit confirms your booking. Extras to budget for: the 10% Panamanian hotel tax on room charges, the 7% tax on excursions and drinks, drinks themselves, guided excursions, and staff gratuities (the lodge suggests 12–15% of the stay). Bring some cash for crafts in Salt Creek and chocolate at the farm. Our price guide explains each item.

The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance, and with several flights and a bus or boat in a 10-day trip we agree. Ask your doctor about vaccinations well before you travel.

Who this itinerary is not for

We would rather you book the right trip than the wrong one, so here is who Casa Cayuco does not suit:

  • Families with children under 5. The lodge does not accept guests under five, because of the remote location and safety.
  • Anyone who needs air conditioning in the bedroom. Only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan.
  • Travellers who want nightlife. Bocas Town is 30–35 minutes away by boat, and there is one scheduled boat a day.
  • Short stays. The minimum is three nights, and honestly four or five is better.
  • Travellers who want to see everything. Ten days is an honest minimum for three places, and it still involves a lot of moving.

How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount

Casa Cayuco does not publish nightly rates, so the booking page is where you see live prices for your dates. This is how to get our 4% off:

  1. Open our booking link — any button or room name on this page goes to Casa Cayuco’s own Cloudbeds booking engine.
  2. Check that HungryTravelPanama is in the promo box before you search dates. Our link pre-fills it; if the box is empty, type the code in exactly as written.
  3. Choose your dates (3 nights minimum) and your room. Book the lodge first, then fit flights and the other stops around your dates. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm, and the daily boat from Bocas Town is built around those times.
  4. Confirm with the 50% deposit (card or bank transfer). Cancelling more than 60 days before check-in refunds the deposit minus a $100 admin fee; 45–60 days forfeits half the deposit; under 45 days forfeits all of it. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.

We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because bookings are tracked only by the code, please do not skip step two.
