Lapland Wedding Ideas: Palettes, Flowers and Styling for Every Season

Planning a Lapland wedding is partly about practical things and partly about picture-making. This is the picture-making post: palettes, flowers, textures and traditions that work in the north, season by season. We style these weddings through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings, and we have learned which ideas survive the cold.

Short answer

The best Lapland wedding ideas start with the season: winter white and forest green with candlelight, midnight-sun linen and wildflowers, or autumn copper, burgundy and gold. We style them with high-quality artificial and preserved flowers that suit Arctic conditions, because fresh petals freeze at −30 °C. See Lapland Wedding Ideas, Winter Wedding in Lapland and our Lapland Wedding Planner page, and tell us your date through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company.

Styling by season: winter white, midnight sun, ruska copper · artificial and preserved flowers that last in Arctic conditions

Start With the Season, Not the Pinterest Board

Many couples arrive with a board of pictures from other places. Most of those pictures will not work in Lapland, not because the north is limiting, but because the light, the cold and the materials are different. A lace dress in the snow is beautiful for ten minutes. A fresh peony arrangement outdoors at −20 °C is not.

So we begin with the season, because it decides almost everything else: the light, the flowers, the clothing, the schedule. From late May to July, the midnight sun lights the night; from September, ruska colours the forest and the northern lights return; from November to March, snow, candlelight and aurora; and April and May bring spring light. The northern lights are possible between September and March, in the dark months.

Once you have chosen the season, the rest follows. Our post on when to get married in Lapland, month by month helps you choose.

Winter: White, Green, Candlelight

Winter is the classic. Three palettes work especially well.

  • Arctic minimalism: winter whites, silvers and deep green, with candlelight and very little else. Clean, calm, photogenic.
  • Romantic winter glamour: velvet, silk, crystal and metallics, with burgundy or blush and grey.
  • Boho wilderness: macramé, dried flowers and earthy tones against natural wood.

Flowers for winter: white roses, ranunculus and anemones with pine, eucalyptus, frosted berries and cotton stems. We work with high-quality artificial and preserved flowers, which hold their shape and colour in the cold. Details that make a difference: pillar candles in hurricanes, wooden lanterns, reindeer hides on benches, wool blankets and fur throws on chairs.

For ceremonies, the birch-arch, the Ice Chapel at the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos and reindeer-sleigh arrivals appear most often in the inspiration. See Winter Wedding in Lapland, Ice Hotel Wedding in Lapland and our post on an Ice Chapel wedding.

Summer and Midnight Sun: Linen and Wildflowers

The midnight-sun wedding is the opposite palette: light, airy and long. Lavender and sage, linen, greenery and wildflowers; fireweed and Arctic poppies in the flower language of the north. A riverside ceremony on the Ounasjoki with a long banquet table, golden light at 23:00 and a bonfire afterwards is a picture that can only be made in these weeks.

Practical points: the light never gets dark, so the schedule can relax, but the nights are bright, so guests who sleep poorly may want eye masks. Insects can be present in summer, and we plan around them. Our post on the midnight sun wedding has more, and the Midnight Sun Wedding in Lapland and Summer Wedding in Lapland pages show how we style it.

Autumn: Copper, Burgundy and Gold

Ruska, the Finnish word for autumn colours, comes in September and early October. The forest turns copper and gold, the berries are red, and the first northern lights return in the dark evenings. The palette writes itself: burgundy and gold, copper, deep green, with dried grasses and candles.

Autumn is also a gentler market. As the published cost guide says, spring and autumn often have more competitive pricing than the winter aurora season, which is in higher demand. Our post on the autumn wedding in Lapland explains more, and Autumn Wedding in Lapland lists the details.

Textures, Light and Details That Work in the Cold

A few details survive the north better than others, and we use them again and again.

  • Candles and lanterns. The most forgiving light, and one that makes everyone look good.
  • Reindeer hides and wool. They are warm, they are local, and they photograph well on benches and chairs.
  • Hand-lettered place cards, menus and signs. Custom stationery gives a wedding its voice. We offer digital design for invitations, menus, seating charts and signage.
  • A flower crown. A Finnish tradition that works in every season, and one the whole group can make.
  • Lakeside bonfires and the wedding sauna. Finnish traditions, not décor, but they shape the day. Our post on a sauna wedding in Lapland explains the sauna.
  • A coffee table. The kahvipöytä, a traditional coffee and cake table, is a very Finnish touch.

Ideas Borrowed From Finnish Tradition

The best Lapland wedding ideas are not decoration at all. They come from how people here actually celebrate, and guests remember them more than any centrepiece.

The wedding sauna. In Finland, the sauna is a place for calm, and preparing for the day in one is a gift: the bridal party can warm up and relax before the ceremony. A sauna preparation area is easy to arrange at a cabin or lakeside venue, and in the evening a sauna by the lake is a beautiful, simple way to end the day.

The flower crown. Making crowns together is a gentle activity the morning before, with greenery and flowers laid out on a table. It works in every season, and the photographs are lovely.

A lakeside bonfire. After dinner, guests step outside with a drink, around a fire. It is warm, and it brings the group together in a way a dance floor cannot.

The coffee table. A kahvipöytä, a table of coffee and cakes, is a traditional Finnish way of being generous, and a good use of a corner of the room.

Local menus. Wild salmon, reindeer, rye and cloudberries make dinner a Lapland experience. A sit-down dinner for 20–50 guests is typically €50–€150 per person according to the published cost guide, depending on the menu and the venue.

And of course the arrival. A reindeer sleigh ride, a husky team or a snowmobile can all frame the entrance. Our guides to a reindeer sleigh wedding and a husky wedding explain what is possible, and the Reindeer Wedding in Lapland and Husky Wedding in Lapland pages show the styling. A basic reindeer experience starts around €400, and a full reindeer wedding styling package from approximately €2,000.

Choose one or two traditions, not all of them. A wedding with a clear idea is stronger than one that tries to be everything. Tell us which ones appeal, and we will weave them into the schedule.

Ideas for Different Sizes

20–50One venue, one long table, a styled eventSilver Birch Resort, Aurora Hill Resort

Guest numbers shape the style as much as the season. A micro wedding can afford hand-made details; a large wedding needs a strong simple idea repeated well.

Mix Ideas Into a Plan

Ideas become a plan when you decide three things: the season, the size and the single feeling you want. Everything else supports those. A useful test is to choose three words for the day and check every idea against them: if the words are “calm, warm, northern”, a candle wall and a reindeer hide belong and a neon sign does not. Most couples find that three words remove half their doubts, and we keep them at the top of the plan so that every supplier sees them. If you tell us the feeling in a few words — “calm”, “festive”, “wild” — we can build a concept and mood board around it. We handle concept and mood boards, arches, backdrops, tablescapes, lighting, florals, signage, delivery, set-up and breakdown. If you would rather rent, our curated collection includes arches, backdrops, napkins, table runners and candles.

FAQ

What are the best Lapland wedding colours?

Winter white and forest green with candlelight for snow; lavender and sage for summer; burgundy, copper and gold for autumn; blush and dusty rose with grey as a soft winter alternative.

Can we use fresh flowers?

Fresh petals freeze at −30 °C, so we work with high-quality artificial and preserved flowers suited to Arctic conditions, which keep their shape in every season.

What season is best for a Lapland wedding?

It depends on the picture you want. Winter for snow and aurora, June and July for midnight sun, September for ruska and April and May for spring light.

How do we make a Lapland wedding feel personal?

Hand-lettered place cards, custom signage, a flower crown, a lakeside bonfire or a wedding sauna. Finnish traditions give a wedding its own character.

Can you style just our venue?

Yes. We offer styling and design, décor rental and full planning, and you can book only the part you need.

How much does styling cost?

The published guide gives full styling packages at €1,500–€5,000 and elopement styling from around €800, with a custom quote after a consultation.

Our Honest Final Word

The best Lapland wedding ideas are the ones that respect the season. Do not fight the cold; dress it in candlelight. Do not fight the light; build the day around it. And do not copy a picture from another place; borrow its feeling and let the north supply the setting.

We run Rovaniemi Weddings ourselves, so we are biased, but we have styled enough tables in the snow to know what lasts. Take your favourite idea, tell us your date through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings, and we will make it work. See Weddings, Lapland Wedding Ideas and Lapland Wedding Packages.
