Things to Do in Bocas del Toro: What You Can Do From a Remote Eco Lodge

Bocas del Toro is famous for beaches, reefs and rainforest, but the list of things to do looks very different depending on where you sleep. Here is what is on offer from Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos, with the real prices and the honest trade-offs.

Most “things to do in Bocas del Toro” lists are written for Bocas Town: bars, taxi boats, a lot of day-trip operators. That is one way to do the archipelago. The other way is to sleep out on Isla Bastimentos, where the reef, the trails and the wildlife start at your door. Everything about Casa Cayuco below comes from the lodge’s own pages, and excursion prices are those listed on its website in November 2026 (per person, and they may change).

Short answer

The best things to do in Bocas del Toro are snorkelling the mangroves and coral, visiting the Zapatillas islands, meeting sloths, monkeys and red poison dart frogs on jungle trails, and spending time in a Ngäbe-Buglé village — and you can do all of them from one base. We chose Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama on Isla Bastimentos as our Panama partner because the guided Salt Creek village tour, kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are included, and the rest is planned on arrival. Book through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

First, choose your base: it decides your activities

The archipelago is a scatter of islands, and every outing is a boat ride. If you stay in Bocas Town on Isla Colón, you are close to restaurants and tour desks, but the best beaches and reefs are a boat trip away. If you stay on Isla Bastimentos, inside the Bastimentos National Marine Park, nature is the neighbourhood.

Casa Cayuco sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Bastimentos, about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town. According to the lodge, the Zapatillas islands are ten minutes away by boat and the Ngäbe-Buglé village of Salt Creek is five minutes by boat (or 30 minutes on foot). A jungle trail starts right at the lodge. That geography is why this list is mostly about nature rather than nightlife.

On the water: snorkelling, Zapatillas and the mangroves

The water is what most people come for. Isla Zapatillas is a half-day trip to two uninhabited islands in the marine park, with white-sand beaches and guided snorkelling ($80 per person). Mangrove snorkelling (half day, $85) is a quieter, stranger experience: soft corals, sponges, octopus and starfish about 25 minutes from the dock, with a chance of dolphins on the way. Both are guided by the lodge’s in-house team.

Closer to home, the lodge includes sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats in the stay, and it says the beach is calm and swimmable all year round — an unusual thing on this coast. Surfers have options too: a half-day surf trip to lesser-known breaks in the marine park ($75, two-person minimum) is for confident surfers and strong swimmers only, and it is not a surf school. The big swell season is November to April, and we cover it in our guide to the best base for surfing Bocas del Toro.

In the rainforest: sloths, monkeys, frogs and trails

Bastimentos is mostly rainforest, and the trails are good. The Casa Cayuco Sendero is a two-hour jungle loop from the lodge ($25) with poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds, and a fresh coconut halfway. From Salt Creek, the Red Frog Trail (1 hour, $35) is lined with red poison dart frogs, the Caiman Trail (2 hours, $35) passes medicinal plants, caimans and frogs, and the Pelicano Trail (half day, $45) crosses the hill to Los Pelicanos beach on the east coast for a swim before looping back.

If sloths are on your wish list, the one-hour Sloth Creek boat ride through mangrove channels is $40 — we wrote a separate guide to where to see sloths in Bocas del Toro. For monkeys, the two-hour Monkey Island visit ($70) is led by the founder of the Monkey Island Foundation, which rehabilitates capuchins. And the lodge’s own resident wildlife is free: bats, geckos, poison dart frogs and the occasional small caiman.

Culture and community: Salt Creek and the chocolate farm

The two-hour guided tour of Salt Creek (Quebrada Sal) is included with every stay, boat transfer through the mangrove channel and all. The village is home to about 900 Ngäbe-Buglé people and is one of the largest and most remote in the archipelago. The lodge employs 28 people from Salt Creek, they walk to work, and a portion of every stay funds village projects — including the Salt Creek Medical Outpost run by the nonprofit Floating Doctors. Read more in our Salt Creek village visit guide.

For something sweeter, the half-day Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70) visits the cacao that ends up in the lodge’s kitchen, and we have more in our chocolate farm guide. Bring a little cash: the village crafts and the farm’s chocolate are paid for in US dollars.

Bigger adventures: Bat Cave, Nidori Beach and lionfish

If you want a proper day out, three trips stand out. The half-day Bat Cave Tour ($95) leaves from Bahía Honda village, goes by cayuco up a creek and then on a one-kilometre jungle hike with headlamps. The full-day Nidori Beach trip ($135, three-person minimum) is an hour by boat to Ensenada village on Punta Valiente, with a short hike, a beach and surf for every level. And lionfish spearing (two hours, with a professional local guide) is a way to help the reef: lionfish are invasive in the Caribbean.

There is also hand-line fishing, birding with a local guide and an in-house massage therapist — book those at check-in. For quiet days, the lodge has a library, a bar, hammocks over the water at the end of the dock and a yoga deck.

A sample three-day plan

You do not need to book any excursion in advance; everything is planned with the guides on arrival, so you can match activities to the weather and to how tired the kids are. This is how we would spread a 3-night stay, which is the lodge’s minimum:

DayMorningAfternoon
ArrivalFly to Bocas; the boat meets recommended flights around 2:00 pmSettle in, swim off the beach, dinner on the dock
Day 2Zapatillas islands and snorkelling (half day)Kayak or paddle board, afternoon snack, rest
Day 3Salt Creek village tour (included) or Sendero jungle loopChocolate farm or Sloth Creek, sunset on the dock
DepartureReturn boat around 12:30 pmFlight back to Panama City

If you can stay five nights you can add the Bat Cave or Nidori Beach without rushing. We explain the maths in how many nights to stay in Bocas del Toro.

What to bring, and who this is not for

Pack reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent (mosquitoes appear at dusk and dawn), a headlamp or flashlight, trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket — rain mostly falls at night and clears by late morning. Our Bocas del Toro packing list has the full version.

To be honest about the fit: the lodge does not take guests under five, only the villa is air-conditioned, there is no nightlife (Bocas Town is 30+ minutes away by boat) and the minimum stay is three nights. If you want a base for bar-hopping and short stays, stay in town. If you want things to do that involve water, wildlife and people, Casa Cayuco is built for it.
