Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November in 2026, and for many US families the long weekend is the one chance of the autumn to escape. Panama is a natural choice: the Caribbean coast is warm, outside the hurricane belt, and a flight away. The honest caveat is that November is one of the rainier months in Bocas del Toro, and we will say so clearly below. Everything about Casa Cayuco comes from the lodge’s own pages and booking terms; we have not stayed there yet, and we do not know whether the lodge plans a special Thanksgiving menu, so ask before you book if that matters to you.

Short answer

Thanksgiving in Panama works best as a four- or five-night beach-and-jungle stay at a remote eco lodge, with realistic expectations about November rain. What November weather is really like in Bocas del Toro

According to the lodge’s FAQ, Bocas del Toro is warm all year at about 27 °C (82 °F). Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and forecasts that show thunderstorms every day are typical tropical unpredictability rather than a washout. The lodge lists November to January as the rainier months (with November and December among the rainiest), and February to April as generally drier.

In practice, that means you should plan for some rain, pack a light rain jacket and treat mornings as the best time for outdoor excursions. Snorkelling at protected spots works all year, and the calmest sea is August to October, so November visibility can vary. On the plus side, the Caribbean surf season starts building in November, with the biggest swell between November and April, which matters if you have teenagers who surf (the lodge’s surf excursion is for strong swimmers and confident surfers only).

If you want a sunnier week, our guides to Bocas del Toro in February and March show the drier alternative, and our rainy-season guide explains how to enjoy the wetter months.

How long to go for Thanksgiving week

Casa Cayuco has a three-night minimum. For a Thanksgiving trip we would plan one of these:

  • Long weekend (3 nights): fly Panama City to Bocas del Toro on the Wednesday or Thursday, return on the Saturday or Sunday. It is tight, but it is the minimum stay and it works if your travel days are good.
  • Four or five nights: add an arrival night in Panama City, and give yourself two full days at the lodge. This is the version we recommend.
  • A full week: two nights in Panama City or Casco Viejo, four or five at the lodge.

Remember the transfer rhythm: the included scheduled boat leaves Bocas Town around 3:00 pm, and the return from the lodge is around 12:30 pm. Air Panama Flight 980 and Flight 981 line up with those times. See how to get to Bocas del Toro and Casa Cayuco for details.

A simple five-night shape for the holiday week: arrive in Panama City on the Sunday or Monday, fly to Bocas on the Tuesday or Wednesday for the afternoon boat, spend Thanksgiving Day itself at the lodge, and leave on the Sunday after the late-morning boat and early-afternoon flight. That gives you three full days to split between a guided excursion, a village visit, a jungle walk and doing nothing at all, which is the part most families end up wanting more of. Keep the day before your international flight home free, because the lodge boat and domestic flights run once a day and a missed connection is hard to recover from.

Thanksgiving dinner on a Caribbean dock

Meals at Casa Cayuco are included: a chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack. The cuisine is mostly plant-based, with fresh fish brought to the dock each evening by cayuco, and the lodge can adapt recipes for allergies and diets, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten. Dinners are often served at a long communal table on the dock, with stingrays gliding past and the stars above.

We do not know of a set Thanksgiving menu and we would not want to promise one. What we can say is that a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock can be arranged on request for special occasions, which is a lovely way to mark the holiday with your own family. Ask the lodge when you book if you have a particular dish in mind, and remember that tips for staff (suggested at 12–15% of the stay) and drinks are extra.

What to do in a November week

With the sea less predictable than in the dry season, favour activities that work in most weather:

  • The included guided tour of Salt Creek (2 hours) with a boat ride through the mangrove channel.
  • The Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour (half day, $70 per person), a good rainy-morning choice.
  • Sloth Creek (1 hour, $40) and Monkey Island (2 hours, $70).
  • The Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop (2 hours, $25), with poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds.
  • Yoga, a massage with the in-house therapist, hammock time and board games on the deck.
  • Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are included, for any clear morning.

Excursion prices are as listed by the lodge in November 2026 and may change. Excursions are planned at check-in, so you can adapt to the weather. For more, see Panama with kids.

Practical tips for a late-November trip

  • Book early: the lodge reopened after closing from 1 May to 31 October 2026 for renovation, and a holiday weekend is the sort of period that fills up. Check live availability through our link.
  • Pack: a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a headlamp and water shoes. Our packing checklist has the full list.
  • Bring cash: US dollars for crafts in Salt Creek and chocolate at the chocolate farm.
  • Taxes: a 10% hotel tax on room charges and 7% on excursions and drinks.
  • Insurance: the lodge strongly recommends travel insurance.

Is Thanksgiving in Panama right for you?

It is a good fit if you want a warm, simple, screen-light family holiday, you can handle a few rainy afternoons, and your children are at least 5. It is not for you if you must have a traditional turkey dinner, need guaranteed sunshine or want air conditioning in every room. In that case, consider the drier months from February on instead.

FAQ

It is one of the rainier months according to the lodge, but rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning. Plan mornings for activities and keep afternoons flexible.

Does Casa Cayuco serve a Thanksgiving dinner?

We do not know of a special Thanksgiving menu. Meals are included and the kitchen can adapt for diets; ask the lodge when you book if you would like something special.

Can I book the new Starfish or Cangrejo bungalows for Thanksgiving?

No. They are ready for stays from 15 December 2026.

Our Honest Final Word

Thanksgiving in Bocas del Toro is not a sunbathing holiday, and the lodge itself lists November among the wetter months. It is a family holiday with jungle trails, mangrove boat rides, chocolate, calm snorkel spots and long dinners on a dock, in a place where the biggest decision of the day is which hammock to use.
