Most of us have had the same thought before booking a rainforest holiday: what will it be like at night? It is a fair question, and the honest answer depends a lot on which room you choose. At Casa Cayuco most rooms are open-air by design, but a few are fully screened in — and that is the first thing we would check if you are nervous about insects. Everything about the lodge below comes from its own pages and booking terms; we have not stayed there yet, and we say so where it matters.

Why a screened room matters in the rainforest

Bocas del Toro is warm all year — the lodge quotes an average of about 27 °C (82 °F) — and warm, green places come with insects. Casa Cayuco is built open to the air on purpose: ceiling fans, open-air bathrooms and a breeze through the rooms are part of why it feels like living in the jungle rather than visiting it. For many guests that is the whole point. For others, a mosquito net alone is not quite enough peace of mind, especially for a child on a first trip or a partner who simply hates things that buzz.

The good news is that you do not have to choose between the lodge and your comfort. Several accommodations here are fully screened in, and the lodge adds tightly woven bug nets over the beds on top of that. Choosing the right room is the single biggest thing you can do for a good night’s sleep.

The Rana Lodge Suite: what you get

Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is tucked away on the second floor of the main lodge. Casa Cayuco describes it as a cosy, fully screened-in room with the views and sounds of the jungle canopy and an en-suite bathroom. It has one queen bed and one twin bed and sleeps up to three, which makes it a good fit for a couple, or for a parent travelling with one child (guests must be 5 or older).

Like every room, it comes with a high-powered ceiling fan, a memory-foam mattress, high-thread-count sheets, a mosquito net and high-speed wifi. Because it sits inside the main lodge, you are a few steps from the dining area, the bar and the guest library rather than along a jungle path — a plus if you do not love walking to dinner with a headlamp.

  • Sleeps: 3 (queen + twin)
  • Setting: second floor of the main lodge, canopy views
  • Best for: couples, or a parent with one child, and anyone who wants a fully screened room

Rana is not the only choice if you want screens between you and the night:

  • Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama — 40 feet up in the canopy, sleeps six. The first floor is fully open-air with up to four twin beds, but the second level is fully screened in with a king bed and plenty of lounge space. A good treehouse compromise for families.
  • Starfish Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama — a brand-new fully screened one-bedroom bungalow on the beach with a king bed, sleeping two. Ready for stays from 15 December 2026; the photos on the lodge’s site are design renderings.
  • Cangrejo Beachfront Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama — a brand-new fully screened two-bedroom beachfront cabaña sleeping four, with two king beds (one converts to two XL twins). Also ready from 15 December 2026, also shown in renderings.

If you want the beach at your door and screens, the two new units are the ones to watch. If you want to be settled in now, Rana and the Mono’s upper floor are open for booking.

What lives here: the honest creature list

Screens do not make the jungle disappear, and we would rather you arrive with realistic expectations. According to the lodge, you may meet geckos, golden silk orb-weaver spiders, bats, poison dart frogs and small caimans around the property. Bats are actually the lodge’s resident bug catchers. Mosquitoes and the tiny biting midges locals call chitras are most active at dusk and dawn, so the lodge recommends natural insect repellent. The bug nets over the beds are tightly woven.

On health, the lodge says malaria and Zika are not a concern in its region, and that hepatitis A and B vaccinations are good to have but not required. That is the lodge’s FAQ, not medical advice — please check with your own doctor before you travel.

What to pack if bugs worry you

  • Natural, skin-friendly insect repellent for dusk walks and the dock at sunset.
  • A flashlight or headlamp for paths after dark.
  • Light long sleeves and trousers for the evening meal and jungle trails.
  • Trail or water shoes, a light rain jacket and reef-safe sunscreen.

Our fuller list is in what to pack for Bocas del Toro. One small thing we like: the lodge asks guests not to use hair dryers, so leave yours at home.

Screened is not the same as air-conditioned

This is the limit we want to be clear about. A screened room keeps insects out, but it is still cooled by a ceiling fan and the sea breeze. The only air-conditioned accommodation at Casa Cayuco is the Estrella De Mar Tropical Beachfront Villa4% off · HungryTravelPanama, which sleeps up to eight and has climate-controlled bedrooms. If you sleep badly in the heat, that is the room to look at; if a fan and an ocean breeze sound fine, Rana is a calm, comfortable choice.

Casa Cayuco is also not for children under five, nor for anyone who wants nightlife — Bocas Town is a 30–35 minute speedboat ride away.

What an evening looks like at the lodge

Dinner at Casa Cayuco is a communal affair: breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner are all included, served at shared tables, with a long table on the dock for dinners under the stars (stingrays glide past in the lights). Cuisine is predominantly plant-based, with fresh fish brought to the dock by cayuco each evening. After dinner you walk back along the boardwalk with a headlamp, and in a screened room you simply close the door and listen to the jungle instead of wearing it.

That ease is why we would steer a nervous first-timer towards Rana: you can enjoy the evening on the deck, then retire to a room where the insects are firmly on the outside. In the morning, locally grown coffee and tea are waiting, and the day starts on the water with kayaks and paddle boards that are included in the stay.
