We love trips where the activities start at the door. A kayak or paddle board you can pick up from the beach whenever you like is one of the best travel luxuries we know, because it costs nothing extra and nobody needs to organise it. That is how paddling works at Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos, according to the lodge. We have not stayed there ourselves yet, so this guide is based on what the lodge publishes, plus general paddling common sense, and it is not a safety briefing: always follow the staff’s advice on conditions.

Why Bocas del Toro is good for paddling

Bocas del Toro is an archipelago of islands, mangrove channels and sheltered bays, and much of it lies inside the Bastimentos National Marine Park. Casa Cayuco sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos. The lodge says it is one of the only resorts in the archipelago with direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year round.

That calm matters for paddlers. A beach you can swim from is also a beach where a first-time stand-up paddler can fall in without drama, and where children can learn to kayak in shallow water. The Zapatillas islands are ten minutes away by boat, Salt Creek village is five minutes away by boat, and mangrove islands lie nearby for exploring.

What equipment is included

The lodge includes the use of sea kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats in every stay. Groups also have access to surf boards, boogie boards and floating chairs according to the lodge’s groups page. You do not have to book any of this: the boards and kayaks are on the beach ready to use, and if you are new to paddling it is worth asking the staff for a quick briefing on conditions before you launch.

The things you may want to bring are:

  • A rash guard or long-sleeved sun shirt, since the sun is strong on the water
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, which the lodge recommends
  • Water shoes
  • A small dry bag for a phone, camera or snacks
  • A hat with a chin strap and polarised sunglasses with a retainer

For the complete packing list, see our Bocas eco-lodge checklist.

Where to paddle from the lodge

Without making promises about conditions, which change daily, these are the natural options:

A group kayak trip at Casa Cayuco – Casa Cayuco, Bocas del Toro, Panama
A group kayak trip at Casa Cayuco Photo: Casa Cayuco
  • Along the beach: a gentle warm-up, ideal for children and beginners.
  • Around the dock: the dock is a gathering place, and the water beneath it is where stingrays glide past at dinner.
  • Towards the mangroves: the nearby mangrove islands are the classic Bocas landscape. Ask the staff which routes and times are best, as tide and wind matter.
  • Early morning: on most tropical coasts the water is calmest early in the day, and the light is lovely, but check with the staff.

If you prefer a guided approach, the lodge offers a half-day mangrove snorkelling excursion ($85 per person), a trip to the Zapatillas islands ($80) and a Sloth Creek boat ride ($40). Prices are as listed by the lodge in November 2026 and may change. There is also a multi-day kayak trip option mentioned for groups; ask the lodge if that interests you. Our snorkelling guide covers the underwater side.

Best months for paddling

The lodge says Bocas del Toro is warm all year at about 27 °C (82 °F). The calmest sea for swimming and snorkelling is August to October, which usually also suits paddling. February to April is generally drier, but it overlaps with the biggest swell season (November to April), so wind and waves can be stronger on exposed coasts. The protected beach and the mangrove channels are less affected.

In the rainier months, paddling is usually best in the morning, before the afternoon clouds. We cannot predict conditions, so ask on the day. Our month-by-month guides, like Best time to visit Bocas del Toro, give you the full seasonal picture.

Paddling with kids and beginners

The lodge accepts children aged 5 and older. For young paddlers we would follow some simple rules, based on common sense rather than lodge policy:

  • Start on the beach in shallow water and stay close to shore
  • Ask the staff about life jackets, conditions and where to paddle before you launch
  • Choose a double kayak so a parent can share with a young child
  • Paddle in the morning, when it is calm, and not when it is stormy
  • Agree a turning-back point and stay in sight of the beach

Teenagers will probably want to try stand-up paddle boarding, then end up lying on the board. Our guide to Bocas del Toro with teens has more ideas.

Which room to choose if paddling is the point

All beachfront accommodations are near the sand, so the boards and kayaks are minutes away. Our shortlist:

A day built around the water

A relaxed paddling day might look like this:

  1. 7:00: coffee on the porch, then a sunrise paddle along the beach.
  2. 8:30: chef’s choice breakfast at the communal table.
  3. 10:00: a guided excursion by boat, such as the Zapatillas islands or mangrove snorkelling.
  4. 13:00: lunch, then hammock time while any shower passes.
  5. 15:30: afternoon snack brought to wherever you are, then a stand-up paddle session.
  6. 18:30: dinner on the dock.

That is our own sketch, not a lodge timetable; the actual days are planned with the in-house guides at check-in.

If you want to mix paddling with a quieter rest day, the lodge also offers yoga on the jungle deck, an in-house massage therapist you can book at check-in, and a guest library. Active travellers often find that two paddle sessions a day, a guided outing and a good night’s sleep are exactly the right amount, and the included kayaks, boards and snorkel gear mean you never feel you have to “get your money’s worth” from an expensive hire. Instead you simply go out when the water looks inviting. That freedom is a large part of why we like the all-inclusive style of a remote lodge for active families and couples.

Do not forget the quiet moments: floating on a board at dusk while bats leave the trees and the first stars appear above Punta Vieja is the kind of memory people bring home from a trip like this. For couples, our honeymoon guide pairs that with the right rooms.
