What 'beachfront' means on a remote Panama island

Beachfront can mean a bungalow on the sand, or a room with a sliver of sea view. At Casa Cayuco on Isla Bastimentos, the beach is Punta Vieja, a secluded bay the lodge describes as calm and swimmable all year round, steps from the rooms, with a dock and an over-water rancho nearby. Because the lodge is far from any road, a beachfront room means waking up to the sound of the water and walking barefoot to the sea.

There are also rooms that are not directly on the beach, like the treetop cabaña, the lodge suites and the beachside Delfín bungalow, which sits in the jungle garden facing the sea. We cover the beachfront ones here.

Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow: the family beach bungalow

Tortuga Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is the one we would book for a family of up to five who want to be right on the sand. It has a spacious open-air layout, an en-suite bathroom, a queen bed and up to three twin beds, and a large covered porch from which you can watch the waves and feel the sea breeze. Like every room at Casa Cayuco, it has a mosquito net, a high-powered ceiling fan, memory-foam mattresses and high-speed wifi.

Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow: the honeymoon favourite

Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is the smallest and, according to the lodge, the most unique of the cabins: a thatched roof, a step-down bathroom and a wraparound porch that suits a book and a view of the wildlife. It has one queen bed and sleeps two, which makes it ideal for honeymooners and anyone celebrating a special occasion. The lodge can arrange a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock on request.

Getting to Casa Cayuco: flights, boat and overland

Most guests fly from Panama City’s Albrook Airport (PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) with Air Panama, about 50 minutes. The lodge recommends Flight 980 in (landing around 2:00 pm) and Flight 981 out (leaving around 2:30 pm), because they match its one scheduled boat a day. The captain meets you at the airport at 2:00 pm with a sign, and the boat leaves the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm for the 30–35 minute ride through the mangrove islands. The return boat leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm. Both are included. Other times mean a paid private transfer, and early pick-ups are not available.

Cheaper overland options exist: an overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante (leaves 8 pm, arrives 6 am) plus a 30-minute water taxi, or a bus transfer from Boquete via Almirante, about four hours including the water taxi. From Costa Rica you can fly Sansa from San José or take the Caribe Shuttle.

An honest note on who should look elsewhere

Casa Cayuco is a specific kind of holiday. It is not the right pick for guests under 5, for one- or two-night stopovers, for anyone who wants air conditioning in every room, or for travellers who want bars and clubs after dark. Mosquitoes and chitras come out at dusk and dawn, so bring natural repellent and a headlamp. If you want a different style of stay, our guide to where to stay in Bocas del Toro compares Bocas Town with the outer islands.

Adventures from your doorstep: what to do while you stay

Casa Cayuco plans excursions at check-in with its in-house guides, so nothing has to be booked ahead. As listed on the lodge’s site in November 2026 (per person, prices may change): Isla Zapatillas half day $80, mangrove snorkelling $85, Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour $70, Bat Cave Tour $95, Monkey Island $70, Sloth Creek $40, Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop $25, and Nidori Beach full day $135 (three-person minimum). The Salt Creek village tour is included, and kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are free to use from the beach.

Planning your length of stay

The minimum stay is three nights. Think of the first and last days as travel days, because the one scheduled boat leaves Bocas Town at 3:00 pm and the return leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm. For most families and couples we would plan four to six nights, which leaves time for the included village tour, a couple of guided half-days and at least one day with no plan at all. Remember that room rates are not published, so check live prices for your dates and compare a 3-night, 5-night and 7-night stay on the booking page.

Our Honest Final Word

Beachfront bungalows on a remote Panama island are about the feeling: sea at your feet, fan overhead, a porch where nobody is in a hurry. We would book Tortuga for a family of five, Pelicano for a honeymoon and Starfish or Cangrejo for the new-build comfort. None of them have air conditioning, and none is for guests under 5.
