Why photographers look at private tours

Aurora photography needs time, patience and the freedom to set up. On a shared tour, the schedule is a compromise between several guests, and stops last as long as the group agrees. With a private tour, your group decides whether to stay or move, and you can ask the guide to choose locations with better foregrounds. That freedom is the main reason photographers choose private.

We are not professional aurora photographers, and we have not yet taken this tour. This guide uses the operator’s published facts and general photography advice. Always confirm tripod and equipment rules with the operator before you travel.

What the private tour includes

The operator lists a local expert guide, transportation in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The tour lasts 5–8 hours, with 19:00 pickup, for 2–8 guests, and all ages are welcome. You choose your pickup location during checkout. The price is NOK 15 000 per group.

The page does not mention photography services such as tripods, lens rental or editing. If you need something, ask.

What to ask the operator before booking

Send a short message listing your needs: how many photographers, what gear you carry, whether tripods are fine in the vehicle, and whether the guide can pick foreground locations. Ask about the time you may spend at each stop and what the plan is for a cloudy night. The operator knows the answers for your date.

A written answer protects you from surprises on the night, so keep it on your phone.

Gear: what we would bring

A camera with manual mode, a wide fast lens, a sturdy tripod, spare batteries kept warm, a remote or timer, and a headlamp with a red light option. Phone users can use night mode on a small tripod or a stable surface. Bring a microfibre cloth for the lens, because cold and moisture fog glass quickly.

Camera settings as a starting point

Start with manual focus on infinity, aperture as wide as your lens allows, ISO 1600–3200 and a shutter speed of 5–10 seconds, then adjust to the brightness of the aurora. Bright, moving lights need shorter exposures to keep detail. Shoot raw if you can and check your focus by zooming in on a star. These are standard starting points, not operator advice.

Cold weather habits that save the night

Keep spare batteries in an inside pocket, let your camera warm up gradually when you return indoors to avoid condensation, and wear thin liner gloves under warm mittens. Plan your night so that you take a break for the warm meal and hot drinks, since cold hands make bad photographs.

Shared or private: when private is worth it

For one or two photographers who want only a good night, the shared Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 2 300 per person is cheaper. For a group of four to eight, or when photography is the main purpose, private starts to make sense. See more options in our Tromsø activities hub.
