Panama's Caribbean coast in brief

Panama has two coasts. The Pacific side has the capital, the canal’s southern end and a lot of the country’s beach resorts. The Caribbean side is smaller, rainier and far more rural, and its best-known beach destination is the Bocas del Toro archipelago in the northwest. Another well-known Caribbean area is Guna Yala (San Blas), run by the Guna people, though stays there are very different, with simple cabins and community-run accommodation.

If you picture a big Caribbean resort with a swim-up bar and a kids’ club, Bocas isn’t that. It is closer to a collection of island hideaways, and that is the charm.

What a Caribbean stay in Bocas looks like

  • Boats are the buses. Almost every trip between islands, beaches and restaurants is by water taxi or lodge boat.
  • Rain is part of the deal. The lodge reports rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, with February–April and August–October generally drier.
  • Warm all year. About 27 °C (82 °F) on average, and Panama is outside the hurricane belt.
  • Wildlife first. Sloths, monkeys, poison dart frogs, dolphins and a lot of birds.
  • Small scale. Lodges sleep dozens, not hundreds.

Our Caribbean pick on Isla Bastimentos
