Why the Type of Home Matters More Than the Island

Most Lanzarote guides spend their words on where to stay on the island. At Finca de Arrieta the bigger decision is what to sleep in, because the 21 homes on the estate are very different buildings that share one location: Arrieta, a fishing village of about 400 people in the Haría municipality, with the golden Playa de la Garita 300 metres down a track and Arrecife airport about 20 km away.

Everything below comes from the operator, Lanzarote Retreats, and its booking engine. The 21 Homes in Three Families

Roughly speaking, the Finca’s homes fall into three groups. The estate runs off-grid on solar panels with a generator back-up, which is why none of the homes has air conditioning, heating, a dishwasher or a TV. Hold that thought, because it changes how the three groups compare.

A word on prices before we go further. The Finca’s rates move a lot between weeks: the same yurt can cost far less in early December than in February, and the operator’s Christmas and New Year dates are the most expensive of all. We have therefore quoted only the sample weeks we pulled in October (mid-November, mid-January and late January) and labelled each with its dates. Treat them as a way to compare homes with each other, not as a promise.

Yurts: Camping With a Real Bed, a Kitchen and a Pool

The operator describes its yurts as luxurious and bohemian but “stripped back”. The operator says the yurts are double-lined and naturally insulated. Even so, a yurt in January feels different from a thick-walled stone building, so pack a fleece and be honest about how you cope with cool nights. If your children get cold easily, that alone may push you toward a cottage. If they would love sleeping in a round Mongolian tent with a private garden to stargaze in, a yurt will probably be the highlight of the week.

Stone Cottages: The Sweet Spot for Most Families

If we were sending a family of four, this is where we would look first. Villas: Space, Bedrooms and One Private Pool

What All 21 Homes Share, and What None of Them Has

Every home gets the same Finca extras: a welcome pack with cava, water, milk, wine, coffee and tea, beach towels, a 24/7 honesty shop, a play park, toys, giant chess and ping-pong, donkeys and chickens, and free use of the 13 m × 2.5 m solar-heated pool. Linen, towels, utilities and wifi are included, check-in is self-service from 16:00 and check-out is by 10:00.

What none of them has is air conditioning, heating, a TV, a dishwasher or an electric kettle, because of the off-grid power. Winter evenings can be cool, so the operator suggests a fleece and a light waterproof. If you want a baby kit, the operator lends a travel cot, high chair, changing mat, potty, toddler step and baby bath free on request.

We have not slept in any of these homes, so we cannot tell you how a yurt feels at 3 a.m. in January. What the operator’s data tells us is that the Finca rewards matching the home to the family: a yurt for the adventurous and thrifty, a cottage or cabin for most families, a villa when you want walls and a bit of luxury. Whichever you choose, book early for January and February, which is the European winter-sun peak.
