We are writing from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, so we know long journeys with kids. Readers in Australia and New Zealand face one of the longest: there is no short route to Panama, and we do not quote flight times or prices because they change by airline and season. What we can lay out accurately is what happens after you land, based on Casa Cayuco’s own getting-there and booking pages.

Short answer

A Panama family holiday from Australia or New Zealand works best as a trip with a rest stop at both ends: fly to Panama City, spend a night or two there, then take the short Air Panama flight to Bocas del Toro and the lodge’s boat to Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama on Isla Bastimentos for at least three nights, with all meals included. Children must be 5 or over. Book through our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

Planning a long-haul family trip to Panama

From Australia or New Zealand you will usually connect somewhere on the way to Panama City’s international airport. Rather than guess at routes, check current options with your airline or travel agent and plan to arrive with a buffer day. Jet lag is the quiet enemy of a short stay: Casa Cayuco has a three-night minimum, and we would suggest at least four or five nights for a trip that took this long to reach.

Panama uses US dollars, so budget in USD. For a broader plan, see our Panama with kids guide.

A sensible route once you land

The lodge’s recommended route is Panama City’s Albrook Airport (PAC) to Bocas del Toro (BOC), about 50 minutes with Air Panama. It suggests Flight 980, arriving in Bocas around 2:00 pm, and returning on Flight 981, leaving around 2:30 pm, because both match the daily boat. At Bocas airport the captain meets you with a sign at 2:00 pm, and the boat leaves the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm for the 30–35 minute ride to Casa Cayuco. The return leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm.

Because the international long-haul arrival time will not necessarily line up with the morning flight, a night in Panama City is the safe plan. Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo (mention Casa Cayuco). Read our Panama City stopover guide and the Air Panama flight and boat guide.

Seasons: matching your holidays to Bocas del Toro

Casa Cayuco’s FAQ describes warm weather all year at about 27 °C (82 °F). Generally drier months are February to April and August to October; rainier months are November to January and May to July. The calmest sea is August to October, and the biggest surf swell runs November to April. Panama is outside the hurricane belt.

For families from the southern hemisphere, the school holidays that often fall in December and January land in Bocas del Toro’s rainier stretch, with the lodge noting that rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning. The lodge also hosts New Year’s Eve with dinner on the dock, a champagne toast and fireworks (extra per-person charge). See our Bocas del Toro in December guide and January guide.

How to book Casa Cayuco with our 4% discount

Casa Cayuco’s own site says the best rate is by reserving directly, and that is exactly where our link goes. We are Casa Cayuco’s partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code, at no extra cost to you. Because the discount is tracked by the code alone, please follow these steps in order:

  1. Open our booking link (any of the buttons on this page). It opens Casa Cayuco’s own booking engine.
  2. Check that HungryTravelPanama is showing in the promo box before you search. If the box is empty, type the code in yourself — it gives 4% off.
  3. Choose your dates (minimum three nights; check-in 3:00 pm, check-out 12:30 pm) and pick your room. Live rates are shown there — the lodge does not publish nightly prices elsewhere.
  4. Confirm with the 50% deposit. The balance is paid on site by cash, bank transfer or card.

On cancellations: more than 60 days before check-in the deposit is refunded minus a $100 admin fee, 45–60 days out half of the deposit is forfeited, and under 45 days the deposit is forfeited in full. The lodge strongly recommends travel insurance. Do check vaccine and entry requirements with your doctor and the relevant government sites; we are not medical or immigration advisers.

Who Casa Cayuco is not for

We would rather you book the right place than our place. Casa Cayuco is probably not your fit if you are travelling with children under 5 (the lodge does not accept guests under 5 because of the remote location), if you can only stay one or two nights (the minimum is three), if you want air conditioning everywhere (only the Estrella De Mar villa has it; every other room is open-air with a high-powered fan), or if you want nightlife — Bocas Town is a 30–35 minute boat ride away and the lodge’s own boat runs on a schedule.
