What the Midnight Sun Means for Tromsø

Tromsø lies far above the Arctic Circle, and from roughly late May to late July the sun stays above the horizon around the clock. We live in Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland, where the summer light is similar in spirit and a little shorter, and we know how it changes the pace of a trip. There is no rush to finish before dark because there is no dark. Evening light at 22:00 is warm and golden, and the sky at midnight looks like a long sunset.

For travellers, that has practical effects. You can start a day tour at 10:00 and still enjoy a long late afternoon. The drive home does not end in the dark. And the landscape, which in winter is white and blue, turns green and bright, with open water and long beaches.

The exact dates of the midnight sun depend on the latitude and the year, so we avoid quoting a start and end day. As a rule, think of it as late May to late July, with bright nights on either side.

The Route in Summer: What to Expect

The tour follows the same coastal road across Kvaløya in every season. According to the operator it includes several scenic stops, wildlife watching, a lunch at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel and stories about fishing traditions, island life and local history. In summer you can expect:

  • Fjord views in full colour: green hillsides and bright water instead of snow and twilight.
  • Beach time: the white-sand beaches around Sommarøy are the highlight of the route, and in summer they are easier to walk.
  • Wildlife: the operator lists reindeer, moose, sea eagles and seabirds. Reindeer and sea eagles are part of the Arctic scene all year, while whales appear in migration months, and none is guaranteed.
  • Lunch with a view: the included lunch at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, by the sea, with vegan and vegetarian options.

The experience is not a hike, and the longest walk is on a beach. That is why the tour suits all fitness levels from age seven.

Summer Versus Winter: How the Same Tour Differs

Winter (polar night)Summer (midnight sun)
LightBlue twilight around middayDaylight around the clock
LandscapeSnow, ice, pink and blue skyGreen slopes, open water, bright beaches
ClothingHeavy winter layersLayers, windproof jacket, sunglasses
Beach walkingCold and windyEasier and more pleasant
Evening planNorthern lights tourLong evening light, no aurora

The most important difference is the aurora. In summer the sky does not get dark enough for the northern lights, so the evening tours that fill winter nights do not run. Plan the summer around daytime tours and long evenings outdoors instead.

What to Wear and Bring in Summer

Summer on the Arctic coast is bright but not always warm. Even in July the wind off the open sea can be cool, and the weather changes quickly, so we would never go out in a T-shirt alone. The tour includes transport, a guide and lunch, but no clothing, so pack for variable conditions.

  • A windproof and waterproof jacket, since coastal showers pass quickly
  • Warm mid-layers, such as a fleece or light wool sweater
  • Comfortable walking shoes or light boots; the beaches and viewpoints can be wet or sandy
  • A hat and light gloves for the windy stops, even in summer
  • Sunglasses and sun cream, because the sun is low but strong and reflects off the water and sand
  • A small daypack for a camera, water and snacks

Mosquitoes and biting midges can be present in parts of northern Norway in the warmest weeks, so a light insect repellent is a sensible addition. If someone in your party is prone to motion sickness, the winding coastal road is worth planning for, in summer as in winter.

One more practical point: the midnight sun can disturb sleep. Bring an eye mask, because most hotel rooms have curtains but the light still finds a way in. A rested group enjoys a 5–6 hour tour far more than a tired one.

For a family of five the private tour is NOK 3,000 per person against NOK 2,100 on the shared tour, a premium that buys flexibility with young children, extra stops and your own pace. With seven guests it is NOK 2,143 each, and with eight NOK 1,875, below the shared price.

Other Summer Options to Combine

Legendary Adventure lists a few summer activities that pair with the fjord tour. The Tromsø Highlights & History Tour with E-bike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 1,250 per person, lasts 3 hours, is recommended for ages 10 and up, has pickups at 10:00, 14:30 and 19:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, and includes a local guide and an e-bike with helmet. It covers sights on the city island such as Skansen, Prestvannet and Telegrafbukta, according to the operator.

The operator also lists a Private Fjord Cruise at NOK 70,000 per group for 4 hours, which is a call-to-book item, so we cannot link a booking with our code for it.

A simple summer day could be the fjord tour in the morning and the e-bike tour at 19:00 in the long evening light, but check the times and the energy of your group before booking both.

A Sample Summer Day in Tromsø

To help you picture it, here is how a summer day with the fjord tour could look. This is our own plan, not an operator itinerary, so adjust it to your group.

  • 08:30: breakfast at your hotel, with sun cream and layers in your bag.
  • 10:00: pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge for the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.
  • Midday: scenic stops, beach time and the included lunch by the sea at Sommarøy.
  • Mid-afternoon: return to Tromsø, around the end of the listed 5–6 hours.
  • Evening: a relaxed dinner in the city, then a walk in the long evening light. If you have energy, the 19:00 e-bike departure is an option for the city sights.

Keep the next morning flexible, and remember that in summer the long light makes it easy to overdo a day. A rest evening is worth more than a second activity.

If you are travelling with children, the private tour lets you stretch the beach stops and shorten the vehicle time, and it welcomes all ages.
