Panama City Stopover Before Bocas del Toro: Casco Viejo and Timing

Most guests reach Casa Cayuco through Panama City, so a night there is worth planning. Here is how we would do the stopover, from Albrook Airport to Casco Viejo and the flight to Bocas.

Short answer

A Panama City stopover before Bocas del Toro is easiest as one night in Casco Viejo, flying out of Albrook (PAC) the next day. Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo when they mention the lodge. The recommended Air Panama Flight 980 arrives in Bocas around 2:00 pm to meet the lodge boat. Do you need a Panama City stopover?

Most guests fly Panama City to Bocas del Toro, so you will almost certainly pass through the capital. Whether you stay a night depends on where you land. Per the lodge, the recommended Flight 980 lands in Bocas around 2:00 pm, which means an early start from the city. If your international flight arrives late, a night in Panama City removes the stress and leaves you rested for the lodge. We always favour a buffer night when a long-haul trip is involved, particularly with kids.

If you are on an overnight route from Europe or North America, see our guide to getting to Bocas del Toro and Casa Cayuco for all the options.

Casco Viejo: why we would base ourselves there

Casco Viejo is Panama City’s historic old quarter, a walkable area of old streets, plazas and restored buildings by the sea. We are keeping this high level because opening hours and restaurants change, but it is the most atmospheric place to spend one evening before a lodge stay in the jungle. It also makes a pleasant contrast: city history on the first night, rainforest and sea after that.

Casa Cayuco recommends the American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo, and guests of the lodge get special rates there if they mention Casa Cayuco. We have no rates to quote, so contact the hotel directly and mention the lodge when you ask.

Airports and getting around

The domestic flights leave from Albrook Airport (PAC), not the main international airport, so check which airport your long-haul flight uses and leave time to cross town. Casa Cayuco names Hobby Pro Tours as an English-speaking driver and tour option, and Uber works too, according to the lodge. We would arrange the Albrook ride the evening before, and add a buffer for traffic, which can be heavy in any capital.

Air Panama runs the recommended flights, 980 to Bocas and 981 back. Fly Trip also flies daily with times varying by weekday, and Blue Skies offers private charters. Flight time is about 50 minutes.

For most people we would book one night before and, on the way home, one night after if the international flight leaves early the next morning. The lodge’s minimum stay is 3 nights, so the stopover adds to, not replaces, your time on Isla Bastimentos. Families with school-age children often like the second night, because it turns the capital into a small adventure of its own instead of just a transit stop. For a longer plan see our 7-day Panama city and Bocas itinerary.

Timing your day to the lodge boat

The lodge runs one scheduled boat transfer a day, included in your stay. For the recommended flights, the captain meets you at Bocas airport with a sign at around 2:00 pm, and the boat leaves from the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at about 3:00 pm. Check-in at the lodge is 3:00 pm. Other times are possible as a private transfer for a fee, but early pick-ups are not available.

On the way out, check-out is 12:30 pm and the return boat leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm, which connects to Flight 981 leaving Bocas around 2:30 pm. In practice that gives you a very easy morning in Panama City the day you fly out and a dinner in Casco Viejo the night you return.

Coming back: the return leg

The return is tighter than the arrival, so plan it the day before. The lodge boat leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm, the same time as check-out, and takes about 30 to 35 minutes to Bocas Town, where the airport is a short taxi ride away. Flight 981 leaves around 2:30 pm, which leaves a sensible margin without much waiting. We would not book an international departure on the same evening unless you leave a generous cushion; a night in Panama City on the way home is the safer choice, and it gives you a second evening in Casco Viejo with the children.

Also keep your travel insurance in mind. The lodge strongly recommends it, and a missed connection is exactly the kind of thing it covers, so read your policy before you fly.

The overnight bus alternative

The cheaper overland route, per the lodge, is the overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante, leaving at 8 pm and arriving about 6 am, then a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. It saves a flight and a hotel night, but it is a long, tiring option with children, and you would arrive too early for the lodge’s afternoon transfer. If you go this way, the lodge’s Bocas Town pickup point lets you store luggage. We would take the plane with kids and keep the bus for backpackers and those on a tight budget.

A simple plan for the day you fly out

On the way to Bocas, the day has a clear shape. Wake up without hurry, have breakfast, and take your ride to Albrook with a buffer. Fly Air Panama Flight 980, which lands around 2:00 pm, then look for the captain with a sign at the Bocas airport. The boat ride through the mangrove islands of the Bastimentos National Marine Park takes about 30 to 35 minutes, so you reach the beach in time for a late-afternoon swim and dinner.

If your flight is delayed or you take another airline, the scheduled boat may not match, and other times are a private transfer for a fee. The lodge’s Bocas Town pickup point is a ten-minute walk or a $2 per person taxi from the airport, and luggage can be stored there. If you wait around, Bibi’s on the Beach is a $1 per person water taxi, and La Buga sits on the water. Always read the pre-arrival form the lodge sends.

What to do with your Panama City evening

Keep it simple. After two or three nights in the jungle you may enjoy a city again on the way home, so the same plan works in reverse. Walk the old quarter at sunset, have a relaxed dinner, and pack for the morning. Food-wise, the lodge cooks predominantly plant-based dishes plus fresh fish, so many travellers enjoy a city meal of anything they like first or last. Keep your lodge essentials in a small bag, since the lodge asks for a pre-arrival form and you will be on a boat the same day. Our packing list for a Bocas del Toro eco lodge is a good checklist to repack from.

FAQ

Should I stay in Casco Viejo or near the airport?

We prefer Casco Viejo for atmosphere and walkability. Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel there if they mention the lodge. Keep in mind that domestic flights use Albrook Airport, so allow time for the ride. Check the lodge’s live information before you travel, as schedules and details can change.

Which airport do the Bocas flights use?

Albrook Airport (PAC) in Panama City. The recommended Air Panama Flight 980 arrives in Bocas around 2:00 pm, and Flight 981 returns around 2:30 pm. The flight takes about 50 minutes. Fly Trip also flies daily with times that vary by weekday.

Can I use Uber in Panama City?

The lodge says Uber works in Panama City, and it also recommends Hobby Pro Tours for an English-speaking driver. We would still book the Albrook ride the evening before and add a traffic buffer, especially with children and luggage. Check the lodge’s live information before you travel, as schedules and details can change.

How early do I need to leave for the Bocas flight?

Leave a generous buffer for traffic and check-in, and confirm your exact flight time. The lodge boat meets Flight 980 at Bocas airport around 2:00 pm, so a missed morning flight can mean a private transfer for a fee. Check the lodge’s live information before you travel, as schedules and details can change.

Is the overnight bus a good idea?

It is the cheapest route: leaving Panama City at 8 pm, arriving in Almirante about 6 am, then a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town. It is tiring and arrives well before the 2:00 pm boat, so we would choose flying with children.

Does my stopover change the 3-night minimum?

No. Casa Cayuco’s minimum stay is 3 nights at the lodge itself, so the Panama City night is extra. Book dates through our link and check that HungryTravelPanama shows in the promo box for 4% off. Check the lodge’s live information before you travel, as schedules and details can change.

Our Honest Final Word

For most families and couples we would book one night in Casco Viejo before the flight to Bocas and treat it as part of the holiday, not a chore. It gives you a rested start, a taste of the capital and a stress-free morning at Albrook for the early flight. Check the timings of Air Panama 980 and 981 against the lodge boat and you are set.

The stopover is not for those on a very tight schedule, and the lodge is not for children under 5, anyone needing air-conditioning everywhere (only the villa has it) or travellers wanting nightlife.
