This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.

First, check the obvious

Make sure you selected the right month and the right number of guests. A party of five or six can fail to find a seat on a departure that has two spaces left. The shared tour takes 2–8 guests, and a large group may need to split or look at the private tour. Also check the next two or three evenings, since a different night often has space.

Option 1: another night

If your trip allows it, the simplest answer is a different evening. For a three-night stay, a Saturday night booked out may leave Friday or Sunday open. The pickup is outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30 (from 25 October), and the tour lasts 5–8 hours.

If you can extend your stay by a night, that also gives you more attempts, which is the best way to see the lights.

Option 2: the private tour

The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 has its own calendar. It costs NOK 15,000 per group for up to 8 guests, 5–8 hours, with a 19:00 pickup from a location of your choice, and is listed for all ages. For four or more people the extra cost per head is smaller. For six to eight guests, it is cheaper per person than the shared tour at NOK 2,300.

Option 3: the Aurora Snowshoe Hike

The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a four-hour evening tour for NOK 1,500 per person, with an 18:30 pickup, ages 10+ recommended. It is not a chase, and it gives you a chance to see the lights from a trail near Tromsø. The calendar is separate, so it can have space when the chase does not.

Option 4: wait for cancellations

The operator refunds in full when a booking is cancelled more than 48 hours before departure, so seats come back. Check the calendar in the morning and the evening, especially two days before the date you want. We cannot promise a seat will appear.

What not to do

Do not book a different operator just because they have space unless you have checked the group size, vehicle and what is included. The discount code only works on Legendary Adventure bookings online. If you do pay elsewhere, you will not get the 5%. We would also avoid watching the sky from the city on your own as your only plan.
