Chocolate Farm Tour in Bocas del Toro: Where to Stay for It
A half-day chocolate farm tour is one of the sweetest excursions on the Bocas del Toro menu. Here is what the lodge says about it, what else cacao means at Casa Cayuco, and how to build a stay around it.

Chocolate and the Caribbean go together surprisingly well, and Bocas del Toro is one of Panama’s cacao-growing regions. We have not taken this tour ourselves, so we stick to what Casa Cayuco publishes and to cautious general knowledge, and we flag where you should ask the in-house guides for detail.
The Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour is a half-day excursion offered by Casa Cayuco for $70 per person. You plan it at check-in with the in-house guides rather than booking ahead, and it fits neatly into a 3-night-plus stay on Isla Bastimentos. What the Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour is
On its adventure menu, Casa Cayuco lists the Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour as a half-day excursion at $70 per person. The lodge sources its chocolate from Green Acres Chocolate Farm in Dolphin Bay, so the farm is also part of what ends up on your plate. Beyond that, we will not invent a timetable or itinerary: ask the guides at check-in what the tour covers on the day you want to go, how you get there and how long you will be out.

In general terms, cacao farms in the region show how pods are grown, harvested and turned into chocolate, often with a tasting at the end. Treat that as general background rather than a promise about this specific tour.
Cacao at the lodge: from village to dessert
Chocolate is not only an excursion. The lodge’s sourcing notes say cacao comes from the neighbouring Ngäbe-Buglé village of Salt Creek, coconut oil from the village, coconuts from the property itself, and chocolate from Green Acres. Coffee is Finca Panda from the Boquete highlands, and organic greens come from Kakao Culture Organics, also in Boquete. Limes come from Bluff Beach.

So even on a day with no excursion, you eat in a place that thinks in local ingredients. Meals are predominantly plant-based with fresh fish brought to the dock every evening by local fishermen. Our sustainable hotels in Panama guide goes deeper into that approach.
Building a stay around the tour
The lodge asks for no advance booking of activities; everything is planned on arrival. We suggest this rhythm for a four-night stay:
- Arrival day: boat from Bocas Town, afternoon snack, first swim.
- Day two: the included Salt Creek village tour, where you can see where cacao comes from and bring some cash for crafts in the village.
- Day three: the chocolate farm tour in the morning, with cash for chocolate to take home.
- Day four: a snorkelling or Zapatillas day, or kayaks and paddle boards from the beach.
If you want other half-day ideas, the lodge also lists Isla Zapatillas ($80), mangrove snorkelling ($85), Monkey Island ($70) and Sloth Creek ($40). See our Isla Zapatillas guide for the beach day.
Is the chocolate tour good for kids?
Casa Cayuco is for guests aged 5 and over, and a farm walk plus chocolate is a natural fit for primary-age children. We would still ask the guides about the pace and any walking involved, because we do not have those details. Kid-friendly meal options are available on request at the lodge, and the kitchen can adapt recipes for allergies, though it does use nuts and gluten, which matters at a chocolate tasting. Read our Panama with kids guide for the wider picture.

What else is included in the stay
Beyond the excursion, your stay covers the round-trip speedboat from Bocas Town, all meals and an afternoon snack, morning coffee and tea, daily housekeeping, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear, yoga mats and the Salt Creek tour. Excursions, drinks and gratuities (12–15% of the stay recommended) are extra, plus a 10% hotel tax on rooms and 7% on excursions and drinks. The Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour price of $70 per person is a listing from the lodge’s site in November 2026 and may change.
Getting to Casa Cayuco
From Panama City, fly to Bocas del Toro (about 50 minutes with Air Panama) and take the lodge’s included boat, roughly 30–35 minutes, from Bocas Town. The recommended flight 980 lands around 2:00 pm and the pickup is at 2:00 pm. See our full getting-there guide.

Chocolate tour or something else? Choosing your half days
With three or four nights you will probably only fit two or three paid half days, so it helps to know how the options differ. The lodge lists these half-day or shorter trips with prices per person:
| Excursion | Length | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour | Half day | $70 | Food lovers, curious kids |
| Isla Zapatillas | Half day | $80 | Beach and snorkelling |
| Mangrove Snorkeling | Half day | $85 | Reef and sea life |
| Monkey Island | 2 hours | $70 | Wildlife and conservation |
| Sloth Creek | 1 hour | $40 | Short, easy, good with kids |
Our rule of thumb: one water day, one land day and one short wildlife trip. The free options, kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkelling off the beach, fill the gaps. The in-house guides can tell you what suits the weather and your group on the day.
Why a village-linked lodge changes the experience
Salt Creek, about 900 people, is one of the largest and most remote Ngäbe-Buglé villages in the archipelago. Casa Cayuco employs 28 people from the village, supporting more than 200 villagers, and all staff walk to work. A portion of every stay funds village projects, such as the Salt Creek Medical Outpost run by the non-profit Floating Doctors, which now holds monthly clinics. That matters for a chocolate-minded trip because cacao and coconut oil are part of the village economy, and spending a few dollars on crafts or chocolate directly supports it. Read more in our Salt Creek village visit guide.

Our Honest Final Word
A chocolate farm tour will not be the reason most people fly to Panama, but it is exactly the kind of local, hands-on half day that a remote lodge makes easy. Casa Cayuco connects it to what you eat, to the village next door and to the cacao that appears at the table.
Plan at least three nights, ask the guides for specifics on the day, and carry a little cash.
