What to Wear on a Snowshoe Hike in Tromsø: Boots, Layers and Staying Warm and Dry
Snowshoeing keeps you moving, so the clothing rules are different from standing still on an aurora night. Here is our practical guide to boots, layers, gloves and what the operator provides.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
The operator says to dress in layers and wear good winter shoes that keep you warm and dry. Snowshoes and poles are included in the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 1 500 per person. Book direct and enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off.

What the operator tells you
The operator’s page gives two pieces of clothing advice: dress in layers of warm clothing to protect yourself from the cold, and wear good winter shoes that will keep you warm and dry throughout the trip. It also says the tour includes the necessary equipment, snowshoes and poles. That is the official guidance, and it leaves a lot of practical detail open.

We live in Rovaniemi and spend many winter days outdoors, so we can add the practical details from experience with Arctic winters in general, though we have not yet joined this tour ourselves. Where we go beyond the operator’s wording, treat it as general advice and check with the operator if you have doubts.
The layer system in three steps
Layers work because you can adjust them. Start with a base layer of thermal underwear in wool or synthetic, never cotton, since cotton holds sweat. Add a mid layer such as a fleece or wool sweater for insulation. Finish with a windproof, waterproof outer shell and trousers. On a snowshoe hike you will warm up while walking and cool down when you stop, so you want to be able to open or remove a layer quickly.
Do not overdress at the start. If you are warm standing at the pickup point, you will be too warm after ten minutes of walking. Aim to feel slightly cool when you begin.
Boots: the one item that matters most
Cold feet end a hike fastest. Choose insulated, waterproof winter boots that are roomy enough for thick socks without squeezing your toes, since tight boots restrict circulation. The boots must also work with snowshoe bindings, so avoid very bulky designs or thin fashion boots. If you are unsure whether your boots will fit the bindings, ask the operator when you book.
Wear wool or thermal socks, one pair, not two thick ones if that makes the boot tight. Bring a spare pair in a bag if you tend to get cold feet.
Hands, head and neck
Bring warm gloves or mittens plus thin liner gloves, so you can handle a phone without exposing bare skin. A hat that covers your ears and a neck gaiter or scarf protect the areas that lose heat first. Sunglasses are useful on bright snow days, even in winter, and a headlamp is helpful if you plan an aurora snowshoe hike in the evening.

Snowshoes and poles are included with the Arctic Snowshoe Hike, so you do not need to bring your own. The guide helps you fit them and shows how to walk. The technique is simple: walk with a slightly wider stance, lift your feet a little higher, and let the poles help with balance. Most first-timers get used to it within minutes.
You only carry what you pack in your own bag, so keep it small. A light daypack with water, a snack and a spare layer is enough.
Sweat is the enemy
The classic mistake in winter is to sweat while walking and freeze when you stop. Manage it by opening zips, removing a hat or gloves for a moment, and drinking water. If you feel damp, tell the guide, since the group usually stops often. A dry base layer and a spare shirt in your bag can make the difference on a long outing.
Kids and teens: ages 10 and up
The shared hike is recommended for ages 10+. Dress children in the same layers as adults, with extra attention to boots, gloves and hats, since children cool faster. Check their hands and cheeks regularly, and bring snacks. For a family group, the Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 12 000 per group lets you set the pace, and our other guides in our Tromsø activities hub explain how to plan family trips.
