What the weather is really like in March

Casa Cayuco describes the climate as warm all year, around 27 °C (82 °F) on average. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and a forecast that shows thunderstorms every day is typical tropical unpredictability rather than a sign of a washout. February through April is generally drier, and February and March are the driest of all.

Panama is also outside the hurricane belt, which is one reason the Caribbean coast works for a winter holiday. Pack for sun first and a light rain jacket second, plus reef-safe sunscreen and a natural insect repellent for the mornings and evenings when mosquitoes and chitras are around.

The sea in March: surf swell versus calm snorkelling

This is the part many March guides skip. According to the lodge, the calmest sea for swimming and snorkelling runs from August to October, while the biggest surf swell is November to April. So March is a surf-season month: great if you want waves, a little livelier on the open coast if you want glassy water.

That does not mean the snorkelling is off. The lodge notes that its protected snorkel spots work all year, and the beach in front of Casa Cayuco is described as calm and swimmable year-round. For a deeper look, read our snorkelling base guide and our surfing base guide.

Surfing in March from Casa Cayuco

The lodge offers a half-day surfing excursion to less-known breaks in the Bastimentos National Marine Park for $75 per person, with a two-person minimum. It is clear that this is not a surf school and is meant for strong swimmers and confident surfers. For a gentler option, the Nidori Beach full-day trip ($135 per person, three-person minimum) takes about an hour by boat to Ensenada village on Punta Valiente, with surf for all levels.

Boards are part of the picture too: the lodge lists paddle boards and surfboards as available to guests, and groups also list boogie boards. Ask at check-in what is on the beach that week.

Reef, islands and sloths: the dry-season day list

Dry months are good for boat days. From the dock you can add excursions the lodge plans with you at check-in, so there is no need to pre-book. A sample March list with the lodge’s prices per person:

March and Easter 2027

Easter Sunday in 2027 falls on 28 March, so some March departures overlap with the Easter period. Holiday weeks tend to be busier across Panama, and Casa Cayuco hosts a maximum of 53 guests, so we would not leave a Holy Week booking until the last minute. We have a dedicated post on Easter and spring break in Bocas del Toro if your dates are near it.

Which room for a March stay

Because the lodge is open-air, March nights are comfortable with a fan and a sea breeze for most guests, and the dry spell means fewer wet-weather surprises on the porch. Our suggestions:

Practical notes: getting there, minimum stay, age limit

Most guests fly from Panama City (Albrook) to Bocas del Toro, about 50 minutes with Air Panama, then take the lodge’s included scheduled boat, around 30–35 minutes, from Bocas Town. The minimum stay is 3 nights, and children must be 5 or older. Check our getting there guide for the flight times that match the boat, and our month-by-month guide to compare March with other months.

A sample five-night March plan

The three-night minimum works, but we think a March trip is better at four or five nights because boat days and surf days both depend on conditions. Here is how we would sketch five nights, with everything adjustable once the in-house guides see the sea and the forecast.

  1. Day 1: Fly to Bocas, take the 2:00 pm pickup boat, arrive for the afternoon snack, a first swim and dinner on the dock.
  2. Day 2: The included Salt Creek village tour in the morning, kayaks or paddle boards in the afternoon.
  3. Day 3: Isla Zapatillas for white sand and guided snorkelling, about ten minutes by boat.
  4. Day 4: A surf morning or the jungle loop, then the Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour or Sloth Creek.
  5. Day 5: A slow morning, yoga or a massage, and a last dinner. Check-out is at 12:30 pm the next day, when the boat returns to Bocas Town.

None of this needs advance booking; the lodge plans excursions at check-in. The one thing to arrange early is any special dietary need, because the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, although recipes can be adapted.

What to pack for a March stay

The lodge’s packing advice is short and practical: reef-safe sunscreen, a natural insect repellent, a flashlight or headlamp, trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket. We would add a dry bag for boat days and a refillable bottle. Outlets are US-style Type A 110 V, electricity runs 24/7 on solar power, and the lodge asks guests not to use hair dryers. You can also bring school or medical supplies for Salt Creek through the Pack for a Purpose programme. Our full packing list has the rest, and the US dollar is the currency, so bring a little cash for crafts in the village.

Our Honest Final Word

March is one of the easiest months to recommend: dry, warm and full of choices, from reef days to surf days to simply doing nothing on a calm beach. The caveat is the swell, which makes it less of a glassy-water month than August to October.

If you want a base that handles the logistics, with meals, boat transfer, kayaks and snorkel gear included, Casa Cayuco is the one we chose to partner with, and the three-night minimum suits a March trip well.
